INTRODUCTION: Velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS) is a neurogenetic disorder caused by a microdeletion on chromosome 22q11. Among other cognitive impairments and learning difficulties, affected individuals show difficulties in estimating time intervals (Debbané et al., 2005). Interestingly, neuroimaging studies have found an increased volume of the basal ganglia of people with VCFS (Eliez et al., 2002; Kates et al., 2004; Campbell et al., 2006). Given that the caudate nucleus represents a central component of the cerebral network underlying temporal perception skills, the present report proposes

Facial motoneuron (FMN) survival is mediated by CD4+ T cells in an interleukin-10 (IL-10)-dependent manner after facial nerve axotomy (FNA), but CD4+ T cells themselves are not the source of this neuroprotective IL-10. The aims of this study were to (1) identify the temporal and cell-specific induction of IL-10 expression in the facial motor nucleus and (2) elucidate the neuroprotective capacity of this expression after axotomy. Immunohistochemistry revealed that FMN constitutively produced IL-10, whereas astrocytes were induced to make IL-10 after FNA. Il10 mRNA co-localized with microglia be

The rodent facial nucleus (FN) comprises motoneurons (MNs) that control the facial musculature. In the lateral part of the FN, populations of vibrissal motoneurons (vMNs) innervate two groups of muscles that generate movements of the whiskers. Vibrissal MNs thus represent the terminal point of the neuronal networks that generate rhythmic whisking during exploratory behaviors and that modify whisker movements based on sensory-motor feedback during tactile-based perception. Here, we combined retrograde tracer injections into whisker-specific muscles, with large-scale immunohistochemistry and dig

A case of alternating abducens hemiplegia was reported. A 16-year-old girl developed alternating hemiplegia characterized by the left abducens nerve palsy and right hemiparesis. In addition, she had right supranuclear facial nerve palsy. A brain MRI showed left mid to lower pontine lesion and vertebral angiography revealed medullary venous malformation in the left pons. SEP with right posterior tibial nerve stimulation showed a delayed central conduction time, suggesting that the lesion involved left medial lemniscus. We previously reported a 39-year-old man who developed pure alternating abdu

Testosterone propionate (TP) administration coincident with facial nerve injury accelerates the recovery rate from facial muscle paralysis in the hamster. One mechanism by which TP could augment peripheral nerve regeneration is through glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) regulation in the facial motor nucleus. In a previous study, axotomy alone induces increases in GFAP mRNA. with TP significantly attenuating the axotomy-induced increases in GFAP mRNA. In the present study, immunoblotting techniques were used to extend our previous GFAP mRNA studies to the protein level. Castrated male hams

Nervous tissue expression of immunological signal and recognition molecules, as well as lymphoid tissue immune responses after facial nerve trauma was studied in male rats of the Lewis and Brown Norway (BN) strains. In both rat strains nerve transection caused within four days the appearance of IFN-gamma-like immunoreactivity in the cytoplasm of axotomized motor neurons and an induction of MHC class I and II, and CD4 molecules on surrounding glial cells to a similar extent. T lymphocytes also infiltrated the facial nuclei ipsilateral to the axotomy in all animals. The number of autoreactive T

The pontine Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KFn) is a core nucleus of respiratory network that mediates the inspiratory-expiratory phase transition and gates eupneic motor discharges in the vagal and hypoglossal nerves. In the present study, we investigated whether the same KFn circuit may also gate motor activities that control the resistance of the nasal airway, which is of particular importance in rodents. To do so, we simultaneously recorded phrenic, facial, vagal and hypoglossal cranial nerve activity in an in situ perfused brainstem preparation before and after bilateral injection of the GABA-rec

Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions of the face, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. Although the facial nerve nucleus has been implicated in HFS pathogenesis, specific research on its functional connectivity within whole-brain networks remains limited. This study aimed to investigate alterations in whole-brain functional connectivity with the facial nerve nucleus as the region of interest (ROI) in HFS patients, before and after microvascular decompression (MVD), to uncover potential mechanisms underlying the

We have previously demonstrated a neuroprotective mechanism of facial motoneuron (FMN) survival after facial nerve axotomy that is dependent on CD4(+) Th2 cell interaction with peripheral antigen-presenting cells, as well as CNS resident microglia. To investigate this mechanism, we chose to study the Th2-associated chemokine, CCL11, and Th1-associated chemokine, CXCL11, in wild-type and presymptomatic mSOD1 mice after facial nerve axotomy. In this report, the results indicate that CCL11 is constitutively expressed in the uninjured facial motor nucleus, but CXCL11 is not expressed at all. Facia

Voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels are a major pathway for Ca2+ entry in neurons. We have studied the electrophysiological, pharmacological, and molecular properties of voltage-gated Ca2+ channels in motoneurons of the rat facial nucleus in slices of the brainstem. Most facial motoneurons express both low voltage-activated (LVA) and high voltage-activated (HVA) Ca2+ channel currents. The HVA current is composed of a number of pharmacologically separable components, including 30% of N-type and approximately 5% of L-type. Despite the dominating role of P-type Ca2+ channels in transmitter release at

It is assumed that mood can be inferred from one's facial expression. While this association may prove to be an objective marker for mood disorders, few studies have explicitly evaluated this linkage. The facial movement responses of women with major depressive disorder (n = 66) and healthy controls (n = 46) under emotional stimuli were recorded using webcam. To boost facial movements, the naturalistic audio-visual stimuli were presented. To assess consistent global patterns across facial movements, scores for facial action units were extracted and projected onto principal component using prin

OBJECTIVE: Offspring of parents with major depressive disorder face a threefold higher risk for major depression than offspring without such family histories. Although major depression is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, neural correlates of risk for major depression remain poorly understood. This study compares amygdala and nucleus accumbens activation in children and adolescents at high and low risk for major depression under varying attentional and emotional conditions.
METHOD: Thirty-nine juveniles, 17 offspring of parents with major depression (high-risk group) and 22 offs

Minocycline is thought to be neuroprotective by inhibiting neuroinflammation (microglial activation) associated with neurodegenerative diseases. In this study we investigated the effect of minocycline specifically on microglial mitotic activity and neuronal regeneration within the facial nucleus following a nerve crush injury. Proliferation was measured by labeling the dividing microglia with 3H-thymidine and quantifying labeled cells throughout the facial nucleus on days 2, 3 and 4 post-axotomy. Regeneration patterns of the axotomized motoneurons were studied by labeling regenerating neurons

OBJECTIVE: To explore the changes of receptor tyrosine kinase B and C (trkB and trkC) mRNA in facial motoneurons following facial nerve injury and repair.
METHODS: The time course of trkB and trkC mRNA in facial motoneurons following facial nerve transection and anastomosis was analyzed using in situ hybridization (ISH) and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) in adult rats.
RESULTS: In the facial nerve simple transection group, the intensity of trkB mRNA signal began to increase to 3d post-operation and to its maximum at 7d. Then, the intensity started to decrease at 14d,

We have previously demonstrated that CD4(+) T cells transiently rescue facial motoneurons (FMN) from axotomy-induced death in immunodeficient mice. Three subpopulations of motoneurons have been observed within the facial motor nucleus following axotomy: one that always survives axotomy (50%), one that is amenable to rescue from axotomy-induced death through the addition of neurotrophic factors or CD4(+) T cells (30-40%), and one that always dies after axotomy (10-15%). The objective of this study was to anatomically map the extent of axotomy-induced cell death and immune cell rescue in the fac

Electrode penetrations were made in the mesencephalon and caudal brainstem at the levels of the periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) and nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) in chloralose-anaesthetized or decerebrate cats. In a systematic fashion, mesencephalic and brainstem loci at every 1 mm of vertical depth were electrically stimulated in a series of mediolateral or anteroposterior electrode penetrations to determine the lowest stimulation threshold at each locus for suppressing the digastric jaw-opening reflex evoked by tooth pulp or infraorbital nerve stimulation; at some loci, the threshold current r

BACKGROUND: The etiology of hemifacial spasm (HFS) remains controversial, with both peripheral and central mechanisms proposed. This study investigates the glabella tap reflex in HFS patients, exploring its relationship with facial nucleus hyperexcitability to assess its potential as a clinical marker of central pathophysiological fluctuations.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled a consecutive cohort of 69 patients with drug-refractory HFS who underwent microvascular decompression (MVD). Preoperative facial motor responses, including glabella tap-induced lateral spread and blink reflex, were a

We report about changes on astrocytes in the facial nucleus of the rat following various types of peripheral nerve lesions. Astrocyte-specific glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was labeled by immunohistochemistry and served as a marker for these changes. Increased GFAP immunoreactivity was found in the facial nucleus on the lesioned side within 2-3 days after axotomy. This change lasted longer (up to 1 year) when axon regeneration was prevented or delayed by placing a metal clip on the proximal nerve stump. Lesion of the trigeminal nerve prior to axotomy reduced the degree of GFAP immunor
