Health Services Use Among Jailed Women with Alcohol Use Disorders.

Correctional facilities now house unprecedented numbers of women with complex treatment needs. This investigation applied the Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations to study 168 jailed women with alcohol use disorders. It described the sample's predisposing (age, race, victimization), enabling (health insurance), and need (self-reported medical, substance use, and mental health problems) factors and examined associations of these factors with pre-incarceration services utilization. Most participants had clinically significant levels of depression and PTSD symptoms, most took psychiatric m

Challenges in accessing and utilising health services for women accessing DOTS TB services in Kolkata, India.

Challenges in accessing and utilising TB treatment are a major reason for the existing gaps in tuberculosis (TB) control in India. Twenty qualitative interviews were conducted with women who were attending or had attended a directly observed treatment short course (DOTS) clinic in Kolkata, India. The resulting data were analysed using a thematic approach. Our results indicated that women experienced several challenges categorised as (1) DOTS specific challenges, (2) lack of client friendly services, and (3) resource constraints. DOTS specific challenges included having to come to the clinic fo

Differential Response and the Reduction of Child Maltreatment and Foster Care Services Utilization in the U.S. From 2004 to 2017.

By 2014, the majority of U.S. states had implemented differential response (DR), a system policy that seeks to serve families of low-to moderate-risk for child maltreatment through family engagement, diversion from formal child protective services investigations, and service provision. However, the effects of DR programs on child welfare dynamics have yet to be evaluated nationally using causal methods. Using a quasi-experimental study design with data drawn from the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System from 2004 to 2017, we found states with DR programs had approximately 19% fewer sub

Minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer remains underutilized in Germany despite its nationwide application over the last decade.

Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) has superior short-term outcomes than open surgery (OS) for colorectal cancer (CRC). However, a nationwide dataset has not been analysed to confirm these findings. We evaluated the distribution and outcomes of MIS for CRC from 2005 to 2015; all in-patients with CRC surgery procedure codes were identified from hospital data, which are entered into the nationwide diagnosis-related group database and forwarded anonymised to the Federal Bureau of Statistics. We determined absolute MIS, morbidity, and mortality rates for specific sub-categories, including procedure

Evaluation of immediate and sustained effects of transitioning quality long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) services to public sector health facilities in Ghana: a pre-post intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are highly effective at preventing pregnancy and demonstrate favorable client satisfaction. However, limited knowledge, misconceptions, and concerns about side effects hinder LARC adoption. Marie Stopes International-Ghana collaborated with Ghana Health Service to implement a 5 year multifaceted intervention to transition quality LARC services from an outreach approach to being available in public sector health facilities. This study evaluates if the intervention resulted in immediate or sustained improvements in the provision of qualit

Lifesaving emergency obstetric services are inadequate in south-west Ethiopia: a formidable challenge to reducing maternal mortality in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Most maternal deaths take place during labour and within a few weeks after delivery. The availability and utilization of emergency obstetric care facilities is a key factor in reducing maternal mortality; however, there is limited evidence about how these institutions perform and how many people use emergency obstetric care facilities in rural Ethiopia. We aimed to assess the availability, quality, and utilization of emergency obstetric care services in the Gamo Gofa Zone of south-west Ethiopia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of three hospitals and 63 health centres

Scaling Peritoneal Dialysis: Center Effects Thresholds in US Facilities.

KEY POINTS: Facilities with large peritoneal dialysis programs (>20 patients) rose from 22.9% to 29%, with very large programs (>50) nearly doubling from 3.5% to 5.9%. Despite policy support, only 44.6% of facilities offered peritoneal dialysis by 2021, indicating barriers remain to widespread adoption. BACKGROUND: Center effects in peritoneal dialysis (PD) refer to how facility patient volume affects outcomes, with larger centers typically demonstrating better patient results. Recent US policy changes have promoted PD utilization, but it remains unclear how this growth has affected center-le

Sexual and reproductive health service utilization and associated factors among in-school female adolescents in the Harari region, Eastern Ethiopia: A mixed-methods study.

Adolescents, especially females, are vulnerable to a wide range of sexual and reproductive health problems, including early marriage, unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, and sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS. This study aimed to assess sexual and reproductive health service utilization and its associated factors among in-school female adolescents in the Harari Region, Eastern Ethiopia. Geographical proximity and health care utilization in veterans with SCI&D in the USA.

In the USA, substantial geographic variation in health care utilization exists in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system. Utilization of health care services is especially important for veterans with spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI&D) who are often at high risk for secondary complications related to their SCI&D. Due to impaired mobility, access to health care for veterans with SCI&D may be even more challenging. The goal of this cross-sectional study was to describe health care utilization relative to SCI&D veteran residential geographic proximity to VA health care

State-Level Changes in Youth Inpatient, Residential, and Outpatient Mental Health Services, 2010-2022.

There are rising concerns over the availability of mental health services for children and youth. Recent evidence has shown reductions in the use of psychiatric inpatient, residential, and outpatient services among youths ages 0-17, with the COVID-19 pandemic and mental health workforce shortages identified as reasons for recent declines. The current study builds upon this evidence by exploring predictors of state-level changes in youth inpatient, residential, and outpatient service use from 2010 to 2022. This investigation involved secondary analysis of data collected from a Substance Abuse a
