Competency in cardiac examination skills in medical students, trainees, physicians, and faculty: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac examination is an essential aspect of the physical examination. Previous studies have shown poor diagnostic accuracy, but most used audio recordings, precluding correlation with visible observations. The training spectrum from medical students (MSs) to faculty has not been tested, to our knowledge. METHODS: A validated 50-question, computer-based test was used to assess 4 aspects of cardiac examination competency: (1) cardiac physiology knowledge, (2) auditory skills, (3) visual skills, and (4) integration of auditory and visual skills using computer graphic animations and

Retention of fellows to the faculty at a research-intensive academic medical center: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: As clinical practice provides >50% of medical schools' revenue, research-intensive medical schools often seek to retain fellows with clinical-care interests. Fellows' considerations when deciding whether to stay at research-intensive institutions where they trained remain understudied. We sought to identify experiential factors associated with faculty-position offers and decisions of fellows in training. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study using a survey and semi-structured interview. We invited 471 fellows training in all clinical departments at our institution to complet

The impact of faculty development interventions on supervisor narrative feedback quality in competency-based medical education.

OBJECTIVES: Improving the feedback that supervisors provide trainees in medical education is challenging. The development of automated methods of rating the quality of narrative feedback has created an opportunity to quantify the impact of interventions focused on this goal. METHODS: We used a previously developed natural language processing model based on the Quality Assessment of Learning (QuAL) score to rate the quality of each comment in our Royal College Emergency Medicine specialty training program from July 2018 to June 2024. We quantified the effectiveness of three faculty development

Immersive learning in quality improvement: evaluating a virtual reality escape room for medical learners and faculty.

BACKGROUND: Didactic approaches to quality improvement (QI) are often perceived as insufficiently engaging, which may limit learner motivation and application of QI concepts. We developed a virtual reality (VR) escape room to reinforce core QI principles and conducted a Phase 1 evaluation focused on feasibility, usability, and perceived educational utility among medical learners and faculty. METHODS: We designed a 60-90-minute multi-puzzle VR escape room aligning with QI principles (terminology, SMART aims, root cause analysis, change ideas, Plan-Do-Study-Act cycles, run charts). Twenty-seven
