[Basic Research on Purine Metabolism and Its Clinical Application].

I graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy and then worked in the Faculty of Medicine, and my research has always focused on applying basic research to clinical practice. I first encountered purine metabolism research when I worked at the Teikyo University School of Medicine. I completed my doctoral studies by applying the measurement of 5'-methylthioadenosine (MTA), a source of adenine, to clinical cases. As part of research into hyperuricemia and gout, which are related to purine metabolism, we established a method for measuring the purine content in foods and reported the amounts of purine in

Understanding and practices of over-the-counter drugs for self-care among students of different medical faculties in a low-and middle-income country.

INTRODUCTION: Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs play a critical role in self-care, markedly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Nepal. Understanding and practices related to OTC drug use among health science students are crucial, given their role in the future of healthcare. This study was conducted with the objective to compare and assess the understanding and practices of OTC drugs for self-care among medical, pharmacy, and nursing students and evaluate the impact of their education on these practices. METHODS: A multicenter comparative cross-sectional study was conducted across thr

Promoting Creative Problem-Solving in Schools of Pharmacy With the Use of Design Thinking.

Creativity and innovation are commonly discussed topics in the health professions and health professions education. However, initiating creative problem-solving without having a well-defined process in place can be a significant struggle. The design thinking process is gaining popularity in the health professions as a helpful strategy for individuals to address complex problems. In this commentary, we outline the design thinking process and advocate for the use of design thinking by faculty members to promote creative problem-solving in schools and colleges of pharmacy. The design thinking pro

The role of academic pharmacy in tobacco cessation and control.

Despite decades of public health initiatives, tobacco use remains the leading known preventable cause of death in the United States. Clinicians have a proven, positive effect on patients' ability to quit, and pharmacists are strategically positioned to assist patients with quitting. The American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy recognizes health promotion and disease prevention as a key educational outcome; as such, tobacco cessation education should be a required component of pharmacy curricula to ensure that all pharmacy graduates possess the requisite evidence-based knowledge and skills

Strategies for Managing Pharmacy Experiential Education During COVID-19.

In recent months, the coronavirus pandemic has significantly affected almost every industry in the United States, including health care and higher education. Faculty and students at colleges and schools of pharmacy nationwide have needed to quickly adapt as the delivery of curricula has shifted to primarily online format. Additionally, experiential rotations have been significantly affected as practice settings such as hospitals and outpatient clinics have limited students' interactions with patients or stopped allowing students on-site altogether. Our commentary will explore strategies that h

Use of an in-house comprehensive exam as a predictor for academic success.

INTRODUCTION: We created a comprehensive, internally developed, knowledge-based assessment called the Year 1 Comprehensive Abilities Assessment (Y1-CAA) in order to address the unique assessment needs of an accelerated three-year pharmacy program. This study investigated the correlation between the Y1-CAA and performance on a variety of academic factors, including, but not limited to, curricular performance, Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment (PCOA) scores, and North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) scores. METHODS: The 120 question Y1-CAA was created and benchmarked by

Operationalizing Pandemic Vaccinations at a Regional Supermarket Chain Pharmacy.

Community pharmacies were underutilized as vaccination locations during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. Since that time, community pharmacies are a common location for seasonal influenza vaccinations with approximately one-third of adults now getting vaccinated at a pharmacy. Leveraging community pharmacies to vaccinate during a pandemic such as pandemic influenza or the current coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic will result in a more timely and comprehensive public health response. The purpose of this article is to summarize the results of a strategic planning meeting held in 2017 that focused o

Faculty perception of team-based learning over multiple semesters.

INTRODUCTION: Perspectives from faculty regarding team-based learning (TBL) are not well understood. Previous studies describe faculty preference for TBL due to increased student interaction despite requiring increased time for design. The perception of changes in faculty workload over multiple semesters has not been measured. This research evaluates faculty workload and perceived student engagement after implementing TBL in a required non-prescription medication course over multiple semesters. METHODS: TBL was implemented in the non-prescription medication course and continued for three cons

Could recruiting former college athletes be the answer to less pharmacy student burnout?

INTRODUCTION: Student pharmacists are in a notable wellness deficit. Pharmacy organizations are issuing statements and providing resources addressing efforts to increase student wellness. This commentary suggests that institutions refocus recruiting efforts on students with experience balancing the demands of school, wellness, and mental health. PERSPECTIVE: The purpose of this commentary is to start the conversation on increasing efforts to recruit candidates who already possess the resilience needed to perform in pharmacy school, with a focus on former college athletes.
