In an environment in which most people have lifestyles that increase risk for initial or recurrent cardiovascular disease (CVD) events, community-based healthy lifestyle initiatives are highly effective in providing programs, education and support to reduce associated CVD risk factors and improve outcomes. Pioneering programs, such as the Stanford Three Community and Five Cities studies, and the North Karelia project in Finland, served as prototypes for current initiatives. These include partnerships with national organizations (e.g., YMCA DPP) and faith-based programs. Training may be provide

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer among women in the United States. While rates of advanced-stage breast cancer have declined overall, incidence is rising among Korean American women. Advanced-stage breast cancer is more frequent among Korean women compared to other Asian ethnic groups, largely attributed to low adherence to breast cancer screening. Church settings offer important opportunities for education as most Korean American women over age 50 regularly attend church services. The objective of this trial is to evaluate the efficacy of a culturally tailored interventi

When disaster strikes, many players are involved in the response: local, state, and federal governments; public entities; community and faith-based organizations (FBOs). Some of these players are prepped to respond to disasters, while others emerge spontaneously to assist when need (or perceived need) arises. Consistently, FBOs are involved with disaster response efforts. "Faith-Based Congregations" or "FBCs" are a subsect of FBOs that are formally organized, stationary religious congregations such as churches, temples, mosques, etc. Unlike some FBOs, FBCs are embedded in communities and steep

PURPOSE: To design, implement, and evaluate a church-based community intervention to provide access to COVID-19 testing in African American neighborhoods in Chicago identified as testing deserts.
METHODS: In collaboration with the Alive Faith Network (AFN), we created a network of church-based COVID-19 testing sites in underserved African American Chicago neighborhoods identified as testing deserts. Sites offered free SARS-CoV-2 polymerase chain reaction-based testing, culturally tailored education, and linkage to care and social resources. Over time, we transitioned to community sites due to

Although caregiving research has expanded over the years, LGBTQ + caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and related dementia (ADRD) remain understudied. LGBTQ + ADRD caregivers encounter unique obstacles (e.g., elevated stress, barriers to inclusive services, stigma and discrimination) that complicate caregiving experiences and have been understudied in research. To address these obstacles, researchers created the RISE Registry, a national network to engage LGBTQ + individuals in ADRD research. Semi-structured interviews (individual and focus groups) were facilitated with LGBTQ +

During the COVID-19 vaccination rollout from March 2021- December 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funded 110 primary and 1051 subrecipient partners at the national, state, local, and community-based level to improve COVID-19 vaccination access, confidence, demand, delivery, and equity in the United States. The partners implemented evidence-based strategies among racial and ethnic minority populations, rural populations, older adults, people with disabilities, people with chronic illness, people experiencing homelessness, and other groups disproportionately impacted by COVI

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer screening is one of the most effective cancer prevention strategies, but most women in Africa have never been screened. In 2007, the Cameroon Baptist Convention Health Services, a large faith-based health care system in Cameroon, initiated the Women's Health Program (WHP) to address this disparity. The WHP provides fee-for-service cervical cancer screening using visual inspection with acetic acid enhanced by digital cervicography (VIA-DC), prioritizing care for women living with HIV/AIDS. They also provide clinical breast examination, family planning (FP) services,

The prevalence of HIV infection among individuals referred from faith-based organizations (FBOs) in south-eastern Nigeria for mandatory pre-marital HIV screening was determined. Of the total of 319 individuals (148 males, 171 females) screened, 25 (7.8%, 95%CI: 4.9-10.7%) were confirmed HIV-positive, comprising 13 (8.8%, 95%CI: 4.2-13.4%) males and 12 (7%, 95%CI: 3.2-10.8%) females. No significant difference was observed in the association between HIV infection and gender (chi2=0.58, df = 1, P < 0.05). The highest prevalence of HIV infection (8.9%) was recorded among individuals in the 21-30 y

INTRODUCTION: Amidst an ongoing surge of opioid use disorder (OUD) incidence, clinicians and policymakers are seeking partnerships with faith communities - including with faith-affiliated treatment centers (FATCs) - to expand access to evidence-based OUD treatment. However, little is known whether FATCs differentially offer such evidence-based treatment services, particularly medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) and co-occurring mental health care.
METHODS: We use the 2021 National Substance Use and Mental Health Services Survey (N-SUMHSS) to examine differences in provision of several

CONTEXT: As part of its reworking of the nation's welfare system in 1996, Congress enacted a major new abstinence education initiative (Section 510 of Title V of the Social Security Act), projected to spend $87.5 million in federal, state and local funds per year for five years. The new program is designed to emphasize abstinence from sexual activity outside of marriage, at any age, rather than premarital abstinence for adolescents, which was typical of earlier efforts. The actual message and impact of the program, however, will depend on how it is implemented.
METHODS: Program coordinators i

Evidence suggests that tens of millions of children and adolescents are involved in youth-serving organizations (YSOs) outside of their homes on a daily basis. Children's involvement with YSOs clearly offers a broad array of emotional, social, and personal development benefits. This involvement can, however, also be associated with a variety of safety risks, including the potential for child sexual abuse (CSA) victimization and the myriad short- and long-term consequences to its victims and their families. Recognizing the significance of CSA within YSOs, the Australian Royal Commission into In

BACKGROUND: Vaccines against diseases such as herpes zoster, pneumococcus and influenza are broadly recommended for older adults, but uptake is frequently low.
VACCINATION BOTTLENECK: Part of the reason may be that access to adult vaccination can be problematic, particularly for minorities and other under-served populations. Potential barriers include complex procedures, limited resources in healthcare systems and lack of structured infrastructure.
STRESS-TESTING EXPENDED VACCINATION: The Covid-19 pandemic necessitated rapid expansion of the infrastructure to deliver adult vaccination, and t

While there has recently been considerable research and public investment in strategies to address homelessness in Canada, food charity remains the primary response to hunger, with little evaluation of current efforts and no initiatives to develop more effective approaches. Using data from a 2010-2011 survey of charitable food assistance in five Canadian cities, this study was undertaken to describe charitable meal provisioning in each city and to compare the relative roles of emergency programs and multi-service agencies and their capacity to meet food needs. Most meals were provided by multi

Persons experiencing homelessness have higher rates of substance abuse, poorer overall health, and higher mortality from opioid overdose than the general population. Measuring progress throughout the addictions recovery process in these populations is challenging, given the multitude of factors that impact the recovery journey among persons experiencing homelessness. Despite these challenges, outcome assessment is essential for informing the continued improvement of recovery programs and validating effectiveness of evidence-based interventions. To better track and monitor progress throughout a

This paper examines two key dimensions of HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa, namely poverty and gender, within the particular context of informal settlements. The study, conducted in five informal settlements of Nairobi, Kenya explored the challenges facing women living with HIV and AIDS (WLWA) in informal settlements in Nairobi in terms of the specific risk environments of informal settlements, the support they receive and their perceptions of their future. The data were gathered through an interviewer-based questionnaire administered to 390 WLWA and 20 key informant interviews with Kenya Ne

While Haiti was still recovering from the January 12, 2010, magnitude-7 earthquake, an outbreak of cholera spread throughout the nation, soon reaching epidemic proportions. Working through the faith-based nongovernmental organization Samaritan's Purse, an NP, an epidemiologist, and a physician joined the effort to prevent the spread of disease and treat those affected. Here they describe the prevention and intervention campaigns their organization initiated, how they prepared for each, and the essential elements of their operations.

Black American (BA) women continue to experience cancer disparities in the US. These disparities warrant innovative ways to prevent cancer. Hereditary Cancer Risk Assessment (HCRA) is a cancer prevention approach that is available but not well known among BA. This pilot study aimed to explore attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs about cancer and HCRA among BA women in the Mountain West and to inform a future health promotion trial. A community-based participatory research approach was employed to engage with predominately Black organizations that have served the region for several years. Women
