Work-family conflict and coping strategies as predictors of emotional exhaustion in nurses.

BACKGROUND: Nursing is a profession characterized by intensive workloads, shift work, and high emotional demands, often leading to conflicts between work and family roles. Work-family conflict has been associated with emotional exhaustion and coping strategies among nurses. AIM: This study aimed to examine the relationships between nurses' work-family conflict, emotional exhaustion, and coping attitudes. METHODS: This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 240 nurses working in public hospitals in Türkiye. Data were collected using standardized measurement tools. Correlation

Temporal disorientation during war: associations with work-family conflict, emotional distress, and burnout.

INTRODUCTION: Disruptions in the temporal experience-such as subjective sense of time being long, short or distant compared to "objective" time-have been found in the context of extreme emotional events. This research, conducted a month after the start of the war in Israel, aimed to identify characteristics of temporal experience among a population facing ongoing crisis conditions, and to examine their relationship to emotional distress and burnout. Based on Hobfoll's Conservation of Resources Theory it was hypothesized that temporal disorientation is essentially the loss of a vital psychologi

Work-family conflict and strain: Revisiting theory, direction of causality, and longitudinal dynamism.

Does work-family conflict (WFC) cause psychological strain or vice versa? How long do these effects take to unfold? What is the role of persistent WFC (or strain) levels in these processes? Prior research has left some of these questions open: Our systematic review reveals that WFC-strain studies have primarily used short (e.g., hours) or long (e.g., years) measurement lags, leaving mid-long lags underexplored. Moreover, while many work-family theories imply long-term effects, prior longitudinal research has often relied on cross-lagged panel models that assume effects to be solely within-pers

Family conflict and depression in HIV-negative heterosexuals: the role of methamphetamine use.

Previous research has reported elevated levels of depressive symptoms among methamphetamine users, but little attention has been paid to possible links between family environment and psychological distress. This study examined relationships between family conflict, substance use, and depressive symptoms in a sample of 104 heterosexual methamphetamine users in San Diego, California. Eighty-nine percent of the sample reported conflict with a family member in the past year. Conflict was reported most often with parents and siblings. Sources of conflict included drug use, lifestyle issues, interpe

Relationships between work-family conflict and family structure in the lives of working mothers in Hungary - a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The family, as the basic socialization environment, is a complex dynamic system that - as a whole and through its subsystems - is in relationships with other social systems (Bagdy in Family socialization and personality disorders. Nemzeti Tankönyvkiadó, Budapest, 2002; Lakatos et al. in Mentálhigiéné és Pszichoszomatika 21(1):56-85, 2020). The system with which the family system has long-term relationships is the work system/environment. Creating and maintaining a work-life balance has become a central issue in our societies, as they are two of the most organising forces, and recon

When the customer is unethical: the explanatory role of employee emotional exhaustion onto work-family conflict, relationship conflict with coworkers, and job neglect.

We integrate deontological ethics (Folger, 1998, 2001; Kant, 1785/1948, 1797/1991) with conservation of resources theory (Hobfoll, 1989) to propose that an employee's repeated exposure to violations of moral principle can diminish the availability of resources to appropriately attend to other personal and work domains. In particular, we identify customer unethical behavior as a morally charged work demand that leads to a depletion of resources as captured by employee emotional exhaustion. In turn, emotionally exhausted employees experience higher levels of work-family conflict, relationship co

Balancing act: exploring the impact of work-family conflict on anxiety among working parents with family health as a mediator.

OBJECTIVE: The increasing prevalence of work-family conflict and anxiety among working parents, particularly in China, underscores the importance of understanding their interrelationship. This study sought to investigate the relationship between work-family conflict (WFC) and anxiety among working parents while exploring the mediating role of family health in this relationship. METHODS: A large-scale cross-sectional survey was conducted using data from the 2021 Psychology and Behavior Investigation of Chinese Residents. The sample comprised 5,068 occupational parents who met the research crit

Negotiating your way to the top: Conflict management by women leaders in family businesses.

Family businesses are a fertile ground for women to take up different leader roles. The way up as well as functioning at the nexus of the business family and family business offer unique negotiation challenges. Women leaders play a central role in preserving family harmony while safeguarding business performance, acting as mediators in cases of intra-family conflict and developing their career as leaders. Traditionally oriented succession dynamics, inequality, and lack of legitimacy as business leaders and family leaders require specific and high-level negotiation competencies. This review exp

Understanding cancer caregiver burden over time: Dyadic assessments of family cohesion, conflict and communication.

ObjectivePreviously we identified three distinct cancer communication concordance groups among cancer patient-caregiver dyads. This secondary analysis examined patient and caregiver reports of family functioning (cohesion and conflict) as associated with cancer communication concordance and assessed each as independent predictors of perceived caregiver burden among hematological cancer caregivers.MethodsA case series of hematological cancer patient-caregiver dyads (n = 171) were recruited from oncology clinics in Virginia and Pennsylvania and followed for 2 years. Family functioning, coparenting, and parents' ability to manage conflict in adolescent anorexia nervosa subtypes.

INTRODUCTION: Studies about family functioning in adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) are conflicting and often do not consider the possible differences between the restricting and binge/purging subtypes (AN-R and AN-B/P). Moreover, an underestimated element is the quality of the coparenting relationship, that is, the level of coordination and agreement between parents, as well as the methods of managing parental conflict. METHOD: The study aims to explore family functioning, coparenting and conflict management in a sample of 60 adolescents with AN-R and AN-B/P and their relations with AN severi

The role of family conflict in mediating impulsivity to early substance exposure among preteens.

OBJECTIVES: Preadolescence substance exposure, which increases the risk of regular substance use, has been a public health concern. Although studies found that impulsivity is a predisposing factor of early substance exposure, the pathways through which impulsivity is associated with early substance exposure remain unclear. This study examined how family conflict mediates this association among U.S. preteens as family environment plays an essential role in pre-adolescent development. METHODS: Respondents (N = 11,800, 9-10 years old) from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study

Hostility, hostile detachment, and conflict engagement in marriages: effects on child and family functioning.

This study examined the relations between patterns of marital communication, child adjustment, and family functioning. Couples with a 4- or 5-year-old child were divided into three groups (N = 126) based on observed patterns of emotional communication: Hostile couples showed a cumulative increase in negative speaker behaviors over the course of a high-conflict marital discussion; hostile-withdrawn couples showed a cumulative increase in both negative speaker and negative listener behaviors over the course of the interaction; and engaged couples showed a cumulative increase in both positive spe

Work-family conflict to unsafe pre-work commuting: A road through sleep and affect.

The potential for connections between work and commuting experiences (i.e. commuting spillover) is the subject of increasing attention in research and practice. Most commuting spillover work has focused on same-day associations, with little attention to the potential for work-related experiences at home to yield across-day spillover that impairs next-morning commuting safety. We map the process through which work-family conflict at home influences next-morning pre-work commute hard braking, emphasising the interceding roles of sleep and affect in across-day commuting spillover associations. Depressive symptoms among migrant Chinese grandparents and intergenerational family conflict: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Amid China's rapid urbanization and demographic aging, the population of migrant grandparents who relocate to cities to provide intergenerational care has been steadily expanding. This group is particularly vulnerable to depressive symptoms due to the accumulation of multiple stressors, and they face an elevated risk of intergenerational family conflict. This study aims to examine the relationship between depression among migrant grandparents and intergenerational conflict within families, with a particular focus on the mediating role of hostile attribution bias and the moderating

Childhood family adversity and adult cortisol response: The role of observed marital conflict behavior.

Childhood family adversity predicts adult interpersonal behavior and physiological responses to interpersonal stress. Additionally, negative marital behaviors (e.g., hostility and distress maintaining attributions) predict maladaptive stress responses and mental health problems, whereas positive marital behaviors (e.g., acceptance and relationship enhancing attributions) predict adaptive physiological and psychological outcomes. The present study examined potential marital behavior mediators and moderators of the link between childhood adversity and cortisol responses to conflict. In a sample

An epidemiological study of ADHD and conduct disorder: does family conflict moderate the association?

PURPOSE: To examine the role of family conflict in the relationship between attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and conduct disorder (CD). METHODS: A cross-sectional national population survey was carried out among 10,838 14-16 year old students in all secondary schools in Iceland. Three latent measures, financial status, ADHD and CD, and one observed measure, family structure, were included in the study. A structural equation model was used to evaluate direct effects between ADHD and CD for four different groups; females and males, experiencing family conflict and those not exper

Eating disorders, parent-child conflicts, and family therapy in Shenzhen, China.

In this article, I report the results of a qualitative study conducted in Shenzhen, China, in which I aimed to (a) identify the characteristics of parent-child conflicts between Shenzhen youths suffering from eating disorders and their parents and (b) contextualize these intergenerational conflicts to understand their meanings within the immediate sociocultural context. I have employed multiple-case studies as the research design. Data have been collected through reviews of the family treatment sessions for ten families, each with an adolescent daughter suffering from eating disorders, and wit
