Family medicine and primary health care in Liberia.

This country profile examines the development of family medicine (FM) and primary health care (PHC) in Liberia, a low-income West African nation with significant health and socioeconomic challenges. Liberia's PHC system is structured across three tiers and relies heavily on community health workers to serve dispersed and underserved populations. Family medicine is an emerging specialty, crucial for strengthening PHC and advancing universal health coverage, especially in rural areas facing workforce shortages. The Family Medicine Specialty Training Program, launched in 2017, addresses the defic

Family formation and the demand for health insurance.

We study how demand for health insurance responds to family formation using a unique panel of young Australian women. Our data allow us to simultaneously control for the influence of state dependence and unobserved heterogeneity and detailed information on children and child aspirations. We find evidence that women purchase insurance in preparation for pregnancy but then transition out of insurance once they have finished family building. Children have a large, negative impact on demand for insurance, although this effect is smaller for those on higher incomes. We also find that state dependen

Family communication and mental health after breast cancer.

In the context of a traumatic event, such as a breast cancer diagnosis, talking with others about the event can facilitate emotional adjustment and meaning-finding. Among women with a history of breast cancer, open communication is likely to be of particular importance in the family setting, as the family is frequently a primary source of support. The goal of this cross-sectional survey study was to determine the association between open family communication about cancer and breast cancer survivors' mental health. Responses from 230 women at various stages post-treatment suggest that the major

A family consultation intervention for health-compromised smokers.

Although spousal support predicts the success of a smoker's cessation efforts, "social-support" interventions based on teaching partners better support skills have had consistently disappointing results. We examined the potential utility of a family consultation (FAMCON) intervention based on family-systems principles in a treatment-development project involving 20 couples in which one partner (the primary smoker) continued to smoke despite having or being at significant risk for heart or lung disease. The 50% rate of stable abstinence achieved by primary smokers over at least 6 months exceeds

Family Support, Self-Rated Health, and Psychological Distress.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive health care is becoming an important issue; however, little is known about the complex relationships between perceived family support, self-rated health, and psychological distress in mixed middle-aged/older primary care patient samples. METHOD: In this cross-sectional and predominantly male sample of 137 patients attending their appointments at a primary care clinic in a Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, participants completed several questionnaires including the Family Adaptation, Partnership, Growth, Affection, and Resolve; the General Health Questionn

Hospital dentistry. Window on total family health care.

A confused and complicated medical history reported by the patient may signal the need for additional medical treatment and behavioral counseling. The issue of dentistry as a primary care health profession is explored, and two cases are presented to illustrate this principle in action.

The health of children of low-income families.

Childhood poverty is common in Canada: 1,114,000 children under 16 years of age live below the poverty line. The incidence is highest among children of single mothers, unemployed parents, Canadian native peoples and recent immigrants, particularly refugees. Compared with the national average, the infant mortality rate is twice as high, deaths from infectious diseases are 2.5 times more common and accidental deaths are twice as common among children of low-income families. Other problems associated with poverty are iron deficiency anemia, dental caries, chronic ear infections, mental retardatio

Public Health Nursing as Connective Infrastructure: A Health Policy Perspective on Family Homelessness and Health Equity.

Family homelessness is shaped by social and structural determinants of health, including poverty, housing insecurity, fragmented services, and unequal access to support. Families with infants and young children are particularly vulnerable to the health and developmental effects of housing instability. Public Health Nurses (PHNs) are uniquely positioned at the interface of health services, family life, and community systems. Through universal reach, relational continuity, developmental surveillance, safeguarding, advocacy, and interagency coordination, PHNs help families remain connected to car

Association Between Maternal Sleep Health and Mental Health: Moderating Role of Family Function.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnancy, as a complex physiological process, significantly alters maternal sleep patterns, which are closely associated with various maternal health outcomes. This study explored the association between maternal sleep health and anxiety/depression symptoms and whether this association differed by family function. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among pregnant women attending obstetrics departments at two hospitals in Nanjing, China. The Sleep Health Index, Family APGAR, and Patient Health Questionnaire-4 were administered to evaluate sleep health, family function,

Developing community-based health education strategies with family history: Assessing the association between community resident family history and interest in health education.

BACKGROUND: Family history (FH) is an underutilized genetically informative tool that can influence disease prevention and treatment. It is unclear how FH fits into the development of community-based health education. This study examines the role that FH plays in perceived threat and health education related to mental and chronic physical conditions in the context of the health belief model. METHODS: Data were collected from 1,048 adult participants aged 18-90 years. Approximately 76% of participants indicated African-American race/ethnicity and 35% had less than high school level education.

Rural Health Scenario - Role of family medicine: Academy of Family Physicians of India Position Paper.

Half the world's people currently live in rural and remote areas. About 70% of the world's 1.4 billion people who are extremely poor live in rural areas. The problem is that the majority of healthcare providers prefer to serve in urban areas. Only a comprehensive and systematic approach can address these inequities. India, the largest democratic republic in the world, possesses 2.4% of the world's land area and supports 16% of the world's population. According to census 2011, 68.84% of population resides in rural areas. Nearly 86% of all the medical visits in India are made by rural inhabitant

Integrating Cultural and Family Resilience Into Health Promotion Programs With Black Families.

Growing evidence shows that cultural and family resilience resources may serve as a protective buffer of the deleterious impacts of racial stress on psychosocial and health-related outcomes among Black adolescents. Thus, we sought feedback from Black adolescents and parents on their use of resilience resources to cope with stress. Specifically, Black facilitators conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with 16 Black adolescents and parents (adolescents: ~63% male, Mage = 15 ± 2.45, MBMI percentile 97.0 ± 3.31; parents: 100% female, Mage = 49.19 ± 9.19, MBMI = 39.76 ± 6.84) to assess their ex

Adversity and children experiencing family homelessness: Implications for health.

This study tests links between adversity and health problems among children in family emergency housing. Children who experience family homelessness are at risk to also experience high levels of stress, health problems, and need for pediatric care. Understanding the connection between stress and health holds the potential to reduce persistent health disparities. Analyses tested whether experiencing a greater number of stressful life events during the early years of life was related to worse health conditions, emergency health care utilization, and hospitalizations. Parents noted children's exp

The economic consequences of reproductive health and family planning.

We consider the evidence for the effect of access to reproductive health services on the achievement of Millennium Development Goals 1, 2, and 3, which aim to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, and promote gender equality and empower women. At the household level, controlled trials in Matlab, Bangladesh, and Navrongo, Ghana, have shown that increasing access to family planning services reduces fertility and improves birth spacing. In the Matlab study, findings from long-term follow-up showed that women's earnings, assets, and body-mass indexes, and child
