State Labor Market Policies and Health.

UNLABELLED: Policy Points Starting in the 2000s, state governments began adopting labor market policies, including minimum wage laws, earned income tax credits, paid family and medical leave programs, paid sick leave mandates, and scheduling laws. Evidence suggests that labor market policies can improve earnings and job quality, and some are associated with improved worker health. States interested in evidence-based policies for improving worker health should consider generous, refundable earned income tax credits; higher minimum wages tied to inflation; greater local government discretion to

Parental Leave and Corporate Welfare at the Territorial Health Company of Fermo. A Cross- Sectional Prospective Study (Marche, Italy).

INTRODUCTION: One of today's main issues is balancing work and family life, which significantly impacts the socio-economic and working conditions of the population. Since the last century, support for parenthood has been at the center of legislative attention both in Italy and Europe. The Italian Constitution of 1948 began addressing the shift from the woman's exclusively domestic role, promoting female workforce integration from the 1950s. Today, Italian legislation focuses on gender equality and worker protection, with measures aimed at reconciling work and family life. Recent terminological

Supporting New Physicians and New Parents: A Call to Create a Standard Parental Leave Policy for Residents.

Parents taking leave after the birth of a child is associated with significant benefits for infants, mothers, and fathers. Although nearly 40% of residents have or plan to have children during residency, there is no standard parental leave policy for these trainees. In this Perspective, the authors discuss the benefits of parental leave, synthesize findings about maternity bias and other negative effects of the current variable approaches to parental leave during residency, and explore underlying causes of the lack of a standard parental leave policy for residents. They also call on the Accred

Fathers' work leave and infant breastfeeding in a state-representative sample of fathers in Georgia, United States.

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding provides multiple maternal and child benefits, but breastfeeding rates are suboptimal. Parental leave access and use have been associated with higher breastfeeding rates, however, there have been a lack of studies examining fathers' use of parental leave. The objective of this study was to measure the associations between fathers' work leave and infant breastfeeding among a representative sample of fathers from Georgia, United States. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from a novel public health surveillance pilot study, the Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monit

Parental Leave for Residents at Programs Affiliated With the Top 50 Medical Schools.

BACKGROUND: Of the top 15 medical schools with affiliated graduate medical education (GME) programs, 8 offer paid parental leave, with an average duration of 6.6 weeks. It is not known how other GME programs approach parental leave. OBJECTIVE: We searched for the parental leave policies for residents in programs affiliated with the top 50 medical schools. METHODS: In 2019, we identified the top 50 medical schools designated by US News & World Report in the research and primary care categories (totaling 59 schools), and identified the associated GME programs. For each school, we accessed its

Paternity Leave Status and Mental Health Symptoms Among Ohio Fathers: A Population-Representative Survey, 2022‒2023.

Objectives. To examine the associations between paternal leave status and mental health symptoms in a large population-representative study of fathers after the birth of a child. Methods. We used data from the 2022-2023 Ohio Fatherhood Survey (OFS) to model the relationship between paid work leave factors and mental health (Patient Health Questionnaire-2 [PHQ-2] and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 [GAD-2]) by using weighted descriptive analyses and adjusted logistic regression modeling. Results. Fathers with unpaid leave were more likely to report anxiety symptoms (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1

Supporting unpaid carers around hospital leave for people detained under the Mental Health Act (1983) in England: carer and practitioner perspectives.

BACKGROUND: When an individual is detained in hospital it is important that they maintain contact with their family, friends and communities as these can be helpful for their well-being and recovery. Maintaining these relationships is also important to unpaid carers (family or friends), but they can be strained by carers' instigation of, or compliance with, the involuntary detention. Section 17 of the Mental Health Act (1983) in England and Wales allows for temporary leave from hospital, from an hour in the hospital grounds to going home for a few days. However, carers are not always involved

Family planning influences and perceptions among dermatology residents from ACGME-accredited training programs: a survey-based study.

As an increasing number of women pursue careers in dermatology, the structure and culture of training must reflect the evolving needs of dermatology residents. To examine perceived barriers to and perceptions of family planning amongst dermatology residents capable of becoming pregnant, evidence-based principles were employed to develop a 40-question survey for dermatology residents in ACGME-accredited training programs. A pilot study was conducted with the Harvard Combined Dermatology Residency Training Program residents before full-scale national electronic survey distribution from April to

Canadian women in otolaryngology: head and neck surgery part 2-challenges in family planning, fertility, and lactation.

BACKGROUND: Previous literature demonstrates that female surgeons face difficulties in family planning, meeting breastfeeding goals, leadership and advancement opportunities. These issues have received limited attention in Canadian surgeons despite different maternity leave patterns compared to the general Canadian population. We sought to describe the experience of otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeons in family planning, fertility, and lactation and to identify the role of gender and career stage in these experiences. METHODS: A RedCAP® survey was disseminated to Canadian otolaryngology-h

Parental leave in medical school: supporting students as parents.

CONTEXT: The overlap between medical school, residency, and childbearing potential increases the likelihood a woman will pursue parenthood within her, or her partner's, medical training. Parental leave benefits mothers, fathers, and infants. Adequate parental leave promotes physical recovery, mental health, infant bonding, improved breastfeeding, appropriate childhood immunization, and familial engagement. Despite the risks and benefits, the United States does not have national paid maternity, paternity, or parental leave requirements. Complicating matters for medical trainees, parental leave

Patient acceptance of the optical diagnosis and misdiagnosis of diminutive colorectal polyps.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Optical diagnosis allows for real-time endoscopic assessment of colorectal polyp histology and consists of the resect and discard and diagnose and leave paradigms. This survey assessed patient acceptance of optical diagnosis and their responses to a hypothetical doomsday scenario. METHODS: We conducted a 3-month cross-sectional survey of colonoscopy outpatients presenting to an Australian academic endoscopy center. RESULTS: A total of 981 patients completed the survey (76.0% response rate). The 60.8% of patients who supported resect and discard were more likely to be old

The Parental Leave Paradox in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Medical school, residency, and fellowship occur during peak reproductive years for most trainees. This poses certain challenges for medical trainees as they approach family-building decisions. While the demands of residency have been well-elucidated, attempts at mitigating these demands alongside parenthood have long been neglected across various specialties. These challenges are perhaps most pronounced in Obstetrics and Gynecology residency programs, which are made-up of an 85% female-identifying workforce and whose training focuses on prenatal and postpartum health. Recent literature suggest

International perspectives on work-family policies: lessons from the world's most competitive economies.

The United States does not guarantee families a wide range of supportive workplace policies such as paid maternity and paternity leave or paid leave to care for sick children. Proposals to provide such benefits are invariably met with the complaint that the costs would reduce employment and undermine the international competitiveness of American businesses. In this article, Alison Earle, Zitha Mokomane, and Jody Heymann explore whether paid leave and other work-family policies that support children's development exist in countries that are economically competitive and have low unemployment rat

Family Histories and Multiple Transitions Among Homeless Young Adults: Pathways to Homelessness.

This study explored the early family histories of homeless young adults, the types and number of transitions they experienced, and their pathways to the street. Intensive qualitative interviews were audio taped and transcribed with 40 homeless young adults 19 to 21 years of age in the Midwest. Findings show that family backgrounds were generally characterized by substance use, child maltreatment, and witnessing violence, all of which provide social context for understanding why so many of these young people opted to leave home in search of an alternative living situation. The current findings

A comparison of women of color and non-Hispanic White women on factors related to leaving a violent relationship.

This study compares women of color and non-Hispanic White women regarding the influence of socioeconomic status, family investment, and psychological abuse on leaving a violent relationship. It was found that most women who left stayed away for less than a month. Women of color and non-Hispanic White women did not differ in their length or rate of leaving, although women of color left more frequently when they did leave. Factors associated with leaving for both groups were threat with a weapon, psychological abuse, being single, and having fewer adults in the household. Women of color with hig
