[Family therapy within the treatment of eating disorders].

The families of patients suffering from eating disorders such as Anorexia nervosa (AN) und Bulimia nervosa (BN) are, owing to the illness, subject to considerable emotional strain and are furthermore often characterised by significant structures and patterns of interaction within the family. Consequently the inclusion of patients' family members, whose status can be seen as increasingly gaining in scientific approval, plays an important role within both diagnosis and therapy. Of particular importance is the medical informative discussion with both patients and their parents which takes place i

Culturally syntonic family therapy for migrant Puerto Ricans.

Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics have traditionally used the nuclear and extended family as vital support systems to deal with stress. Some Puerto Rican migrant families living in the United States have been suspected of being at high risk for mental health problems precisely because they lack extended family supports. Working together as bilingual co-therapists, the authors found that a systems-oriented family therapy approach is effective and syntonic with the culture of Hispanic migrants. They provide a clinical vignette and warn therapists about the potential problems in differentiating d

Pilot study comparing multi-family therapy to single family therapy for adults with anorexia nervosa in an intensive eating disorder program.

Multi-family therapy (MFT) has yet to be evaluated in families of adults with anorexia nervosa (AN). The study aims were: (i) assess the feasibility of MFT for AN; and, (ii) assess whether MFT is associated with improved outcomes for families compared with single-family therapy (SFT). Adult patients with AN consecutively referred to an eating disorder treatment program were assigned (non-randomly) to receive eight sessions of SFT or MFT. Assessment occurred pre-therapy, immediately post-therapy, and at 3-month follow-up. A total of 37 female patients (13 SFT, 24 MFT) and 45 family members (16

The impact of winning and losing on family interactions: a biological approach to family therapy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the connection between winning and losing and family functioning. We do this by hypothesizing a link between successful outcomes in individual competition and in functional family interaction. This enables us to show how therapeutic interventions can be directed toward the attachment system, by lowering anxiety and fostering mutual trust, and toward the social rank system, by promoting success and feelings of empowerment. METHOD: A search of online databases was conducted with key search terms related to winning and losing, and their effects on attachment patterns and fa

[Family Psychiatry - The Attachment-Focused, Systemic-Oriented, Integrative Concept of the Family Therapy Centre (FaTC), an Acute Multi-Family Day Clinic].

Family Psychiatry - The Attachment-Focused, Systemic-Oriented, Integrative Concept of the Family Therapy Centre (FaTC), an Acute Multi-Family Day Clinic Up to three quarters of the children of mentally ill parents develop a mental disorder during their lifetime. The transmission occurs essentially through dysfunctional interaction and disturbed attachment. Parent-child interaction is characterized by a vicious circle of escalating symptoms in the child and increasing helplessness in the parents. For this family psychiatric approaches are helpful, which address the interaction in addition to th

New Trends and Therapies for Familial Hypercholesterolemia.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is associated with an elevated risk of atherosclerosis. The finding of monogenic defects indicates higher atherosclerotic risk in comparison with hypercholesterolemia of other etiologies. However, in heterozygous FH, cardiovascular risk is heterogeneous and depends not only on high cholesterol levels but also on the presence of other biomarkers and genes. The development of atherosclerosis risk scores specific for heterozygous FH and the use of subclinical coronary atherosclerosis imaging help with identifying higher-risk individuals who may benefit from furt

An Evaluation of Multisystemic Therapy with Australian Families.

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Multisystemic Therapy (MST) intervention for Australian families invloved with the Specialist Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS). This program was implemented within the Western Australian Department of Health in 2005, and has continually operated two small clinical teams within the Perth metropolitan area since then. This intervention was specifically chosen to improve service access, engagement, and intervention with vulnerable families having young persons with a history of significant and enduring behavioural problems. The Effectiveness of Adolescent-Focused Therapy and Family-Based Therapy for Anorexia Nervosa.

Anorexia Nervosa is the most deadly mental illness due to the high mortality and relapse rates after reaching remission. The systematic review investigated the effectiveness of two empirically validated interventions (Family-Based Therapy [FBT] and Adolescent-Focused Therapy [AFT]) for an adolescent or young adult living with Anorexia Nervosa to reach partial or full remission and expected weight ratios. Twelve studies published between 1994 and 2015 were evaluated and indicated that FBT resulted in significant weight gain and higher partial and full remission rates than AFT, demonstrating its

Multi-family therapy for bulimia nervosa: a qualitative pilot study of adolescent and family members' experiences.

BACKGROUND: Multi-family therapy (MFT-BN) is a new treatment for adolescent bulimia nervosa with emerging empirical support. It extends the bulimia nervosa focussed family therapy model, by offering treatment in a group setting. Up to nine families work together with a team of clinicians over the course of 20 weeks. No qualitative study to date has investigated the experience of MFT-BN. This study aimed to explore this from the adolescent and parent/caregiver perspective. METHODS: Participants from two consecutive MFT-BN groups facilitated at the Maudsley Hospital in London, UK, were invited

Multi-family Therapy for Eating Disorders Across the Lifespan.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to report on recent evidence for multi-family therapy for eating disorders (MFT) across the lifespan. It is a narrative update of recent systematic, scoping and meta-analytic reviews. RECENT FINDINGS: There has been a recent increase in published theoretical, quantitative and qualitative reports on MFT in the past few years. Recent and emerging data continues to confirm MFT can support eating disorder symptom improvement and weight gain, for those who may need to, for people across the lifespan. It has also been associated with improved comorbid psychiatric

Family therapy for persons with schizophrenia: neglected yet important.

Since the 1950s, the observed disturbances in family relationships in which a member has been diagnosed as having schizophrenia has led many systemic family therapists to the hypothesis that these family interactions may have preceded the onset of illness and contributed to it. However, attempts at using traditional family therapy with families of patients with schizophrenia were not successful or widely adopted. With the introduction of neuroleptic medication, the treatment of schizophrenia changed dramatically, and patients often returned to their family in varying stages of partial remissio

Incorporating Multicultural Couple and Family Therapy Into Incarcerated Settings.

Incarceration rates have increased significantly since the 1990s, with more than two million adults in federal, state, and local facilities. More than half of the offenders report a history of mental health issues, highlighting the importance of offenders having access to effective therapeutic approaches, including individual, couples, and family counseling. Traditionally, the focus of mental health services has been individual treatment; however, family members are also significantly impacted by the offender's absence during incarceration. Incorporating family members into treatment can serve

Redemptive experience in relational family therapy: a Christian perspective.

We all long for relationships with others, because only in connecting with others can we develop our intrapsychic structure and become functional adults. We are psychologically predisposed to have a constant connection with others and are driven toward relationships with others. Our deepest yearnings are therefore devoted to building solid dialogue as the means of becoming fully human. We, therefore, consciously or unconsciously, long for a relationship where we can experience happiness, satisfaction and, above all, redemption or salvation from our dreads, miseries and unhappiness. In this art

Family therapy: its role in the prevention of criminality.

The family imprints its members with selfhood in all cultures. Absence of family imprints can result in the development of deviant childhood behavior and loss of identity. In two black racial groups in dissimilar world areas and sampling (Kenya, Africa and Newark, N.J.), five familial determinants interfered with the development of culturally accepted family imprints and led to deviant and criminal behavior. It is suggested that if these deterrents, namely poverty, lack of family authority figures, rejection of of the individual child, absence of family cohesiveness, and loss of individual ide

Variability in remission in family therapy for anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The evolution toward more stringent conceptualizations of remission in family therapy for adolescent anorexia nervosa (AN) has, with time, introduced variability in outcomes across randomized controlled trials (RCTs). An examination of remission across the history of research on family therapy for AN shows that earlier studies adopted lenient definitions and generally yielded higher rates of remission than studies of the past decade that have used stricter definitions of remission. In this study, we investigate the reactivity of remission rates to the application of different defini

[Fasciola hepatic infection in a family: diagnosis and therapy].

A 39-year-old man was hospitalized because of a 5-week history of feeling very ill, with fever up to 39 degrees C and nonspecific upper abdominal pain. He looked very pale and his spleen was painful on palpation. There was a blood eosinophilia of over 50% and computed tomography demonstrated hypodense areas in the liver, suggesting a parasitic infection with liver involvement. An ELISA factor of over 100 and the finding of liver fluke eggs in bile confirmed the diagnosis of Fasciola hepatica infection, which was probably acquired by eating wild watercress when visiting in the Allgäu. Behavior therapy in a family context: treating elective mutism.

This paper discusses the necessity of using both behavioral and family approaches in combination, while working with electively mute children. The symptom and its significance within the family system is presented along with a rationale for avoiding the pitfalls of individual approaches with such children. A case history outlining specific behavioral techniques is described in detail with an exploration of the use of reinforcement theory, counter-conditioning, and successive approximations in bringing about change in electively mute children. The need for bringing about changes within the fami

Enhanced cognitive behaviour therapy for adolescents with anorexia nervosa: an alternative to family therapy?

A specific form of family therapy (family-based treatment) is the leading treatment for adolescents with anorexia nervosa. As this treatment has certain limitations, alternative approaches are needed. "Enhanced" cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT-E) is a potential candidate given its utility as a treatment for adults with eating disorder psychopathology. The aim of the present study was to establish, in a representative cohort of patients with marked anorexia nervosa, the immediate and longer term outcome following CBT-E. Forty-nine adolescent patients were recruited from consecutive referrals t

Families' Experience of Family Therapy by Videoconference During the First Lockdown: A Qualitative Study.

To ensure continuity of care during the Covid-19 pandemic, family therapy sessions were maintained via videoconferencing. Few studies evaluate the effectiveness of this modality. This exploratory qualitative study gathered the experiences of families who underwent videoconferencing family therapy during the first French lockdown and in-person therapy before and after. This study was conducted in France, within a department of adolescent medicine and psychiatry. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted with eight families and analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results
