Fascia Lata: Another Workhorse for Complex Skull Base Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Multiple methods exist for skull base reconstruction of defects created by expanded endonasal approaches. While the nasoseptal flap (NSF) has been well established as the workhorse of mucosal reconstruction in complex skull base defects in multi-layered closures, a variety of options exist for the inner layer of multilayer reconstruction, including fascia lata (FL). OBJECTIVE: To present our experience and outcomes in utilizing FL in multiple ways to reconstruct a wide variety of complex skull base defects. METHODS: Retrospective review was performed from May 2017 to February 202

Efficacy of allograft fascia lata in tympanic membrane repair.

We conducted a retrospective study to determine the efficacy of allograft fascia lata in both primary and revision tympanic membrane surgery (myringoplasty). Our patient population included 64 patients-31 men and 33 women, aged 19 to 98 years (mean: 49.5)-who had undergone tympanic membrane surgery with allograft fascia lata. Patients were grouped according to whether they had undergone primary surgery (n = 47) or revision surgery (n = 17). Data were compiled at preoperative and immediate postoperative visits, as well as at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months postoperatively. Residual perforations were def

Fascia lata onlay patch for repairing infected incisional hernias.

Abdominal incisional hernias represent the most common wound complication after abdominal surgery and infected abdominal incisional hernias are difficult to manage. We describe a simple, safe and effective method of using a free fascia lata patch to repair a large infected incisional hernia. This procedure involves the following steps: incising the skin and subcutaneous tissue and identifying the edges of the hernia defect; incising each anterior rectus sheath and completely suturing the medial edges of the fascia with 0 polypropylene; creating a fascia lata patch; and overlapping the defect i

A new technique for single-person fascia lata harvest.

OBJECTIVE: Reconstitution of a watertight dural closure at the conclusion of most neurosurgical operations is a very important step to prevent cerebrospinal fluid leak, encephalocele formation, or infection. If sufficient native dura is not available to accomplish this goal, a dural substitute is required. METHODS: We have developed a system of single-person fascia lata harvest that is fast, safe, and easily mastered. Through a standard incision along the iliotibial band, the fascia lata is dissected from the underlying muscle, and with the use of a simple system of stainless steel plates, a

[Large intramuscular lipoma of the tensor fasciae latae muscle].

We present the case of a woman with a large intramuscular lipoma of the tensor fasciae latae muscle. Histologically, the diagnosis was confirmed and differentiated from other entities by immunohistochemical staining. Our case underlines the importance of radiologic and histologic differentiation of common lipomas from atypical adipose tissue tumors.

Preexpansion of the tensor fasciae latae for free-flap transfer.

Preexpansion has become an established technique to prefabricate elective free flap transfers. We report the use of the tensor fasciae latae flap as a donor site in two cases for reconstruction of a burn scar neck contracture and an unstable contralateral below-knee amputation stump, of which other donor sites were ruled out either by the patients' condition or by choice. Implantation and transfer were straightforward and the donor sites of very large flaps were minimized by preexpansion. The preexpanded muscle fasciocutaneous flaps were transplanted with microsurgical anastomoses of the vesse

[Contribution to the study of the vascularization of the fascia lata tensor muscle].

The tensor fascia lata is a short flat muscle arising from the anterior superior iliac spine and inserting into the fascia lata at mid thigh. It is supplied by three arterial pedicles of unequal importance, branching from the external iliac, gluteal and deep femoral arteries. The 'dominant' blood supply is carried by the lateral circumflex femoral artery which comes from the deep femoral and enters the muscle, approximately 8.8 cm beneath the anterior superior iliac spine. This vessel varies in size from 2 to 3.5 mm; it is 8 cm long but can be lengthened by ligating the branch for the vastus l

A microdissected thin tensor fasciae latae perforator flap.

A new method, named "microdissection," has been introduced to create a thin flap by elevating the tensor fasciae latae perforator flap to serve as microdissected thin tensor fasciae latae perforator flap. In microdissection, perforators that run in the posterolateral direction in the adipose tissue after penetrating the deep fascia are dissected meticulously using an operative microscope, and a thin flap is elevated in a single process. The caliber of the perforator artery and vein in the tensor fasciae latae muscle measures approximately 0.7 mm and 0.9 mm, respectively. When transplanting the

A case of chronic expanding hematoma in the tensor fascia lata.

We describe a patient in whom a chronic expanding hematoma was pathologically confirmed by examination of the resected specimen. It developed gradually in the left lateral thigh, which had been bruised 8 months before, but had produced no mass-related symptoms initially. Computed tomography (CT) showed the mass to be homogeneous with capsule formation, whereas ultrasonography showed it to resemble a multilocular cyst. The lesion was treated by complete excision of a perifascial mass. Grossly, a well-circumscribed, fusiform mass with a soft cystic center and a fibrous pseudocapsule was observed

Pharyngoesophageal reconstruction with a tensor fasciae latae free flap.

This report describes our experience with the use of a tensor fasciae latae flap in total reconstructions of the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus. This flap is durable, reliable, and easy to elevate. Moreover, it is possible to obtain a tight two-layer closure of the circumferential suture lines by means of the vascularized fascia. We think this flap will be one of the methods of choice in reconstructions of the hypopharynx and cervical esophagus.

Extensive Achilles tendon ossification: Repair using a fascia lata graft.

Ossification of the Achilles tendon is a relatively common finding. However, a large ossification covering more than two third of the tendon is rarely seen. A 70 year old patient with a 12 cm long Achilles tendon ossification is discussed. The ossification was surgically removed and the tendon was subsequently reconstructed using a fascia lata autograft. Postoperatively the ankle was immobilised for 3 months. One year postoperatively the patient was completely recovered with the ability to stand on his toes, and minimal loss in range of motion. LEVEL OF CLINICAL EVIDENCE: 4.

Reconstruction with fascia lata after extensive chest wall resection: results.

OBJECTIVES: Following extensive chest wall resection, the reconstruction technique should fulfill two opposing functional requirements: adequate rigidity and flexibility of the chest wall during the breathing phases. Reconstruction with fascia lata enables a balance between these two parameters, thus favouring the patients' respiratory dynamics and producing low morbidity and good functional results. METHODS: Sixty patients underwent chest wall reconstruction using fascia lata alone or in combination with titanium plates between 2006 and 2011, due to primary tumours in 28 patients, metastases

A Novel Technique for Septal Perforation Repair: Fascia Lata Graft.

BACKGROUND: Nasal septal perforation (NSP) is an anatomical defect involving the mucosa, cartilage/bone of the nasal septum, most commonly caused by septoplasty. Spontaneous healing of a perforated septum is rare; instead, it tends to worsen over time. Several surgical approaches have been described for NSP repair. In this study, the authors present a novel technique using only fascia lata graft for repairing NSP of various sizes. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective study, including 23 patients who underwent NSP repair between January 2020 and January 2022. Grafts were harvested, a

BACKGROUND: An eyelid malignant tumor invading the medial canthus is a serious eyelid disease that requires extensive resection and complex destruction. The medial canthus ligament is especially difficult to repair because its reconstruction often requires special materials. In this study, we described our reconstruction technique using autogenous fascia lata. METHODS: Data from 4 patients (4 eyes) who had medial canthal ligament defects after Mohs resection of eyelid malignant tumors were reviewed from September 2018 to August 2021.
