Fast-food and convenience outlets near schools in California: a comparison of private and public schools.

Food environment near schools (FENS) influence children's dietary habits and contribute to obesity. Socioeconomic characteristics of schools and school neighborhoods play a role in determining FENS. We compare the availability of fast-food restaurants (FFRs) and convenience stores (CSs) across schools' socioeconomic characteristics: whether the school is public or private and the school neighborhood's median household income. We obtained the number of FFRs and CSs within a 0.75-mile network buffer from schools' locations and the names of the outlets. Negative binomial regression models, strati

Effects of food, fasting, and exercise on plasma pyrophosphate levels and ENPP1 activity in healthy adults.

BACKGROUND: Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) is highly regulated as it plays a critical role in the regulation of physiological mineralization. Dysregulation of plasma PPi is associated with skeletal hypomineralization and pathogenic mineralization in soft connective tissue, arteries, and heart valves. There is no standard approach to measuring PPi, making it difficult to establish PPi as a biomarker of mineralization disorders. This study aims to determine the impact of time of day, meals, or exercise on plasma PPi homeostasis using a highly sensitive PPi assay. METHODS: In this single-center t

Scurvy in the present times: vitamin C allergy leading to strict fast food diet.

Scurvy results from a deficiency of vitamin C, a nutrient otherwise known as ascorbic acid. Today, scurvy is rare yet emerges in select patients. The patient reported herein developed scurvy secondary to deliberate avoidance of vitamin C-rich foods. Classic cutaneous manifestations of scurvy include follicular hyperkeratosis and perifollicular hemorrhage encompassing coiled "corkscrew" hairs and hairs bent into "swan-neck" deformities. Ecchymoses, purpura, and petechiae are also characteristically prominent. Classic oral abnormalities include erythematous, swollen gingivae that hemorrhage from

Impact of fasting on food craving, mood and consumption in bulimia nervosa and healthy women participants.

Researchers have found that dietary restraint increases food cravings and may contribute to loss of control over eating. Negative mood states often precede food cravings and binge eating. In the present study, we tested the influence of a prolonged food deprivation period over emotional states and food cravings. Twenty-one bulimia nervosa participants and 20 healthy women participants were asked to refrain from any eating for 20 hours and reported, at baseline, after 6 hours and at the end of the fasting period, their mood and craving states. Food consumption was also measured. Fasting increas

Peptide S is a novel potent inhibitor of voluntary and fast-induced food intake in rats.

Peptide S (NPS or PEPS) and its cognate receptor have been recently identified both in the central nervous system and in the periphery. NPS/PEPS promotes arousal and has potent anxiolytic-like effects when it is injected centrally in mice. In the present experiment, we tested by different approaches its central effects on feeding behaviour in Long-Evans rats. PEPS at doses of 1 and 10 microg injected in the lateral brain ventricle strongly inhibited by more than 50% chow intake in overnight fasted rats with effects of longer duration with the highest dose (P<0.0001). A similar decrease was obs

Fast-Food Component-Induced Epigenetic Modifications Modulate Immunotherapy in Metastatic Breast Cancer.

The impact of fast-food components on epigenetic modifications and their implications for immunotherapy in metastatic breast cancer remain inadequately explored. In this study, we investigated the effects of selected fast-food components monosodium glutamate (MSG), acrylamide (AA), sodium sorbate (SS), and sodium nitrite (NaNO2) on the expression of the epigenetic enzymes histone deacetylase 8 (HDAC8) and protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5), and their role in suppressing immunotherapeutic responses in MDA-MB-231 triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. Determination of phthalate concentrations in paper-based fast food packaging available on the U.S. market.

Phthalates are one of many chemical compounds that are used as plasticisers. Packaging can transfer plasticisers to the surfaces of foods or other materials. A recent study suggested a link between fast food consumption and increased urine phthalate metabolites even though phthalates are most commonly found in food contact materials made of PVC while fast food packaging is most commonly composed of paper and paper board. Phthalates in PVC are usually present in percent concentrations. In non-PVC food contact materials, such as paper or paperboard, the concentrations, if any, are expected to be

Association of Fast Food and Supermarket Density with Neonatal Outcomes of Pregnancies Affected by Gestational Diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: To measure the association of fast food density (FFD) and supermarket density (SD) with adverse neonatal outcomes in pregnancies with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study of women with GDM who delivered at a tertiary care center in a large metropolitan area (1/2010-2/2016). ZIP codes were used to link women with surrounding food environment. FFD and SD were calculated as the number of establishments per 100,000 residents for each ZIP code and classified into quartiles. Quartile 1 represented lowest FFD or SD. Four neonatal outcome

Food addiction linked to changes in ventral striatum functional connectivity between fasting and satiety.

INTRODUCTION: The concept of "food addiction" (FA) has gained popularity in view of clinical and neurobiological overlaps between excessive food intake and addictive disorders. However, no studies have examined the link between FA and striatocortical circuits involved in addictive disorders, or the influence of homeostatic status, which regulates the drive to eat, on these systems. This study aims to investigate changes in striatal functional connectivity between fasted and fed conditions among adults ranging in body mass index (BMI) and FA symptoms. METHODS: Thirty adults were recruited from

Using the Hilbert Transform to Evaluate the Effects of Functional Foods on Autonomic Nervous System Activity: A Comparison with the Fast Fourier Transform.

Evaluating the autonomic nervous system (ANS) via heart rate variability (HRV) to investigate the effects of food on human health has attracted attention. However, using a conventional HRV analysis via the fast Fourier transform (FFT), it is difficult to remove artifacts such as body movements and/or abnormal physiological responses (unexpected events) from the HRV analysis results. In this study, an analysis combining bandpass filters and the Hilbert transform was applied to HRV data on functional food intake to compare with FFT analysis. HRV data were obtained from six males by recording ele

Do fast foods cause asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema? Global findings from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) phase three.

BACKGROUND: Certain foods may increase or decrease the risk of developing asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema. We explored the impact of the intake of types of food on these diseases in Phase Three of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. METHODS: Written questionnaires on the symptom prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema and types and frequency of food intake over the past 12 months were completed by 13-14-year-old adolescents and by the parents/guardians of 6-7-year-old children. Prevalence ORs were estimated using logistic regression, adjusting for

Eyes on the Fries: An Eye-Tracking Study of Motivated Attention and Calorie Labeling on Fast-Food Menus.

Background/Objectives: This study examines the effectiveness of calorie labeling on restaurant menus by investigating how visual attention is allocated between calorie information and food cues. Although calorie labeling policies are widely implemented, prior research suggests limited impact on reducing energy intake. Methods: Using eye-tracking technology, this study explored how menu design factors (specifically visual food cues) influence attention. Results: Results from a within-subject experiment (N = 82) indicated that calorie labels received significantly fewer visual fixations (in term

Flow Injection Analysis-Mass Spectrometry for the fast detection of frauds in Coleus forskohlii food supplements.

Coleus forskohlii supplements (FKSs) are widely consumed for their obesity-preventing effects, mainly related to forskolin, its main bioactive compound. However, these supplements are susceptible to adulteration and various types of frauds have been described. Therefore, the development of rapid and sensitive methodologies is of great interest in order to determine the quality of these products. In this work, a new method by Flow Injection Analysis-Mass Spectrometry (FIA-MS) has been developed and validated for the detection of potential frauds in FKSs. A Box-Behnken experimental design was us

Modulation of neural fMRI responses to visual food cues by overeating and fasting interventions: A preliminary study.

Neural processing of visual food stimuli is perturbated at extremes of weight. Human fMRI studies investigating diet effects on neural processing of food cues could aid in understanding altered brain activation in conditions of under- and overnutrition. In this preliminary study, we examined brain activity changes in response to 10 days of high-calorie-diet (HCD), followed by 10 days of fasting, hypothesizing that HCD would decrease activation in homeostatic and reward regions, while fasting would increase activation in homeostatic/reward regions and decrease activation of self-control regions

α-1 Adrenoceptor Activation in the Dorsal Raphe Nucleus Decreases Food Intake in Fasted Rats.

The dorsal raphe (DR) nucleus is involved in a myriad of physiological functions, such as the control of sleep-wake cycle, motivation, pain, energy balance, and food intake. We have previously demonstrated that in ad libitum fed rats the intra-DR administration of phenylephrine, an α-1 receptor agonist, does not affect food intake, whereas clonidine, an α-2 receptor agonist, potently stimulates food intake. These results indicated that in fed rats an increased adrenergic tonus blocked food intake, since the activation of α-2 auto-receptors, which decreases pre-synaptic release of adrenaline/no

Fast food diet with CCl4 micro-dose induced hepatic-fibrosis--a novel animal model.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is defined as a spectrum of conditions ranging from hepatocellular steatosis to steatohepatitis and fibrosis, progressing to cirrhosis, which occur in the absence of excessive alcohol use. Several animal models capture aspects of NAFLD but are limited either in their representation of the disease stages or use for development of therapeutics due to the extended periods of time required to develop full histological features. METHODS: Here, we report the development of a novel rat model for NAFLD that addresses some of these limitations. We
