BACKGROUND: Psychotic-like anomalous self-experiences (ASEs) are core and early features of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, which have been recently also postulated to underlie embodiment disturbance in feeding and eating disorders (FEDs). The present study was aimed at investigating the interplay between ASEs and specific psychopathology in FED.
METHODS: Ninety persons with Anorexia Nervosa and 41 with Bulimia Nervosa were evaluated with the inventory of psychotic-like anomalous self-experiences (IPASE), identity and eating disorders (IDEA), body uneasiness test (BUT), and eating disorder

OBJECTIVE: The new ICD-11 eating disorders (ED) guidelines are similar to the DSM-5 criteria. One difference to the DSM-5 is the inclusion of subjective binges in the definition of bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge-eating disorder (BED). The aim of this study was to identify differences between the ICD-11 guidelines and DSM-5 ED criteria, which could impact access to medical care and early treatment.
METHOD: Data of 3863 ED inpatients who completed the Munich Eating and Feeding Disorder Questionnaire were analyzed using standardized diagnostic algorithms for DSM-5 and ICD-11.
RESULTS: Agreement

Feeding is an intrinsic and fundamental behavior regulated by complex neurobiological networks that integrate peripheral metabolic signals with neurotransmitter systems within key brain regions. Histamine, a biogenic amine acting as a neuromodulator in the central nervous system, plays a crucial role in the regulation of food intake and energy homeostasis. Within the hypothalamus, histaminergic neurons influence appetite-related circuits, primarily through H1R and H3R. Central administration of histamine suppresses food consumption, an effect largely mediated via H1R. The blockade of H1R has b

Feeding and eating disorders (FEDs) are a heterogeneous grouping of disorders at the mind-body interface, with typical onset from childhood into emerging adulthood. They occur along a spectrum of disordered eating and compensatory weight management behaviors, and from low to high body weight. Psychiatric comorbidities are the norm. In contrast to other major psychiatric disorders, first-line treatments for FEDs are mainly psychological and/or nutrition-focused, with medications playing a minor adjunctive role. Patients, carers and clinicians all have identified personalization of treatment as

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence, age at diagnosis, and associations between perinatal risk factors of feeding and eating disorders (FED) diagnosed at hospital in children aged 0 to 3 years.
METHODS: A nationwide cohort of 901 227 children was followed until 48 months of age in the national registers from 1997 to 2010. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) for FED diagnosis according to the International Classification of Diseases and associations with perinatal risk factors.
RESULTS: A total of 1365 children (53% girls) were diagnosed

BACKGROUND: Educational interventions are a key element in the care of young patients with feeding and eating disorders, forming part of the majority of therapeutic approaches. The aim of this review is to evaluate the impact of educational interventions in adolescents with feeding and eating disorders.
METHODS: Following the PRISMA recommendations electronic databases were searched up to 29 June 2023. Studies related to educational interventions in young population diagnosed with feeding and eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, bulimia nervosa, pica

BACKGROUND: Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED) are characterized by less frequent symptoms or symptoms that do not meet full criteria for another eating disorder. Despite its high prevalence, limited research has examined differences in severity and treatment outcome among patients with OSFED compared to threshold EDs [Anorexia Nervosa (AN), Bulimia Nervosa (BN), and Binge Eating Disorder (BED)]. The purpose of the current study was to examine differences in clinical presentation and treatment outcome between a heterogenous group of patients with OSFED or threshold EDs.

This vignette study examined perceptions of 237 male and female undergraduate students regarding two severity levels (low and high) of other specified (OSFED) and unspecified feeding and eating disorders (UFED) in their male and female peers. Multilevel modeling showed that female characters received stronger endorsements of eating pathology than male characters for similar symptom presentations. College men were more likely than college women to rate female characters as having eating disorders. Gender bias about eating disorders affected men and women differently in this study. Implications

INTRODUCTION: Electroencephalography (EEG) represents a powerful tool to detect abnormal neural dynamics in child and adolescent psychiatry. Feeding and Eating Disorders (FEDs), such as anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) onset in childhood and adolescence. EEG has rarely been used to examine cortical brain activity in children and adolescents with FEDs. This review aims to summarize EEG findings in FEDs amongst children and adolescents, and to highlight areas deserving further research.

The Avoidant-restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) was included in the fifth edition of the DSM in 2013 and in the BNO-11 diagnostic manual in 2019. Prior to this, the problem was often unrecognised or diagnosed as an eating disorder not otherwise specified or feeding and eating disorders of infancy or early childhood. The new diagnosis allows for better targeting of patients who have not been diagnosed earlier, as well as for the diagnosis of patients over the age of six. The authors, in their review, describe the diagnostic features and symptom profile of ARFID, and they discuss the role

BACKGROUND: To investigate Feeding and Eating Disorders (FED) heterogeneity based on the co-occurrence of FED symptoms and personality psychopathology, on the hypothesis that empirical profiles would not confirm current FED categories but identify unique phenotypes carrying different levels of clinical complexity.
METHODS: Latent Profile Analysis profiled FED patients based on the assessment of both FED symptoms, through the Eating Disorders Inventory, third version (EDI-3), and personality characteristics, through the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2. Then, profiles were compare

OBJECTIVE: Within the eleventh edition of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), diagnostic criteria for feeding and eating disorders were revised and new diagnoses including avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) are classifiable; however, nothing is known about how these changes affect the prevalence of feeding and eating disorders. This study compared the distribution and clinical characteristics of restrictive feeding and eating disorders between ICD-10 and ICD-11.
METHOD: The Eating Disorder Examination (EDE), its child version, and the EDE ARFID module were ad

BACKGROUND: Parents with past and current eating disorders (ED) have been shown to report troubles nourishing their infants. This could increase the risk of infant feeding problems linked to maternal anxiety and depression. It is not clear how mothers' eating difficulties before pregnancy and at the time of birth can affect infant's feeding. We aimed to specify the impact of eating disorders on mothers' adaptation and sensitivity to their offspring during feeding, by comparing a population of mothers with eating disorders and controls.
METHODS: Twenty-eight women agreed to participate in inte

Feeding and eating disorders represent some of the most devastating and paradoxical conditions in medicine, where the biological drive to survive collides with altered motivation, affect, and reward. Although neurobiological and metabolic research has substantially advanced our understanding of feeding and eating disorders, mechanism-driven therapeutic options remain limited. The oxytocinergic network has gained increasing attention for its dual capacity to regulate energy balance and socio-emotional processing. In this review, we systematically integrate preclinical and clinical evidence to p

BACKGROUND: Maternal eating disorders (ED) have been shown to increase the risk of feeding difficulties in the offspring. Very few studies, however, have investigated whether the effect of a maternal ED on childhood feeding is a direct effect or whether it can be ascribed to other child or maternal factors. We aimed to determine the role of maternal anxiety and depression in mediating the risk for feeding difficulties in infants of women with ED.
METHODS: A prospective study comparing women with lifetime ED (441) and without any lifetime psychiatric disorder (10,461) and their infants from th

BACKGROUND: Adolescents with severe restrictive eating disorders often require enteral feeding to provide lifesaving treatment. Nasogastric feeding (NG) is a method of enteral nutrition often used in inpatient settings to treat medical instability, to supplement poor oral intake or to increase nutritional intake. This systematic review sets out to describe current practice of NG in young people with eating disorders.
METHODS: A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines was conducted by searching AMED, EMBASE and MEDLINE databases from 2000 to 2020. Inclusion terms were: enteral feeding by

BACKGROUND: While eating disorders (EDs) are thought to result from a combination of environmental and psychological stressors superimposed on genetic vulnerability, the neurobiological basis of EDs remains incompletely understood. We recently reported that a rare missense mutation in the gene for the transcriptional repressor histone deacetylase 4 (HDAC4) is associated with the risk of developing an ED in humans.
METHODS: To understand the biological consequences of this missense mutation, we created transgenic mice carrying this mutation by introducing the alanine to threonine mutation at p

OBJECTIVE: To examine feeding patterns and growth in the first year of life in infants of women with eating disorders in a population-based cohort.
STUDY DESIGN: Women and their infants (n = 12 050) from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children were studied. Prospectively collected data on feeding difficulties at age 1 and 6 months, breast-feeding during the first year, and weight and conditional growth at age 9 months were compared for infants of women with a self-reported history of an eating disorder (anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa) and women with and without other severe p

OBJECTIVE: In Anorexia Nervosa (AN) distorted body image beliefs range from overvalued ideas to delusions, significantly influencing illness trajectory. However, these phenomena remain underexplored, particularly in other Feeding and Eating Disorders (FED). This systematic review and meta-analysis investigates the prevalence and clinical significance of delusional-like beliefs related to body image and eating concerns in FED.
METHOD: Following PRISMA guidelines, PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library were searched for quantitative studies (1960-January 2025) investigating delusional

BACKGROUND: Feeding and eating disorders are associated with significant illness burden and costs, yet access to evidence-based care is limited. Low intensity psychological interventions have the potential to increase such access.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on the use of low intensity psychological interventions for the treatment of feeding and eating disorders. Studies comparing low intensity psychological interventions against high intensity therapies and non-eating disorder specific psychological interventions were included, as well as those with waiting
