General introduction and epidemiology of trichinellosis.

All studies on trichinellosis have been based on the assumption that there is only one cosmopolitan agent of human and animal trichinellosis; Trichinella spiralis (Owen, 1835). In the past, swine and only a few synanthropic animals were considered reservoirs, and the presence of the parasite in sylvatic animals was considered rare. Breeding experiments before, and then biochemical approaches (isoenzymes and DNA analysis), showed the presence of a high genetic variability inside this genus, suggesting it be considered as polyspecific. At present, eight gene pools, named from T1 to T8, have been

First evidence of pathology in the forelimb of the late Miocene saber-toothed felid Promegantereon ogygia (Machairodontinae, Smilodontini).

We examined the first evidence of pathology in the forelimb of the primitive saber-toothed felid Promegantereon ogygia, observed in a radius from the late Miocene (Vallesian, MN 10) site of La Roma 2 (Teruel, Spain). This fossil is the first evidence of a member of the Machairodontinae in this locality, and the first fossil of this species found in the Miocene basin of Teruel. The radius shows an exostosis shaped as a rough and wide bony crest probably caused by the lesion and posterior ossification of part of the tendon of the muscle abductor pollicis longus, an important extensor and abducto

First record of notoedric mange in ocelot (Leopardus pardalis Linnaeus, 1758) in the Amazon region, Brazil.

This paper describes a case of notoedric mange in an ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) in the Brazilian Amazon region. A young male of approximately four months of age that was illegally kept as a pet was apprehended in Altamira, State of Pará, northern Brazil. The animal was transported to the Mangal das Garças Park in the state's capital city of Belém. The ocelot had pruritus and lesions suggestive of scabies in the head. Skin scraping material was examined under optic microscopy. There was seen a large number of eggs, larvae, nymphs and adult mites. The mean female and male sizes were 230.2 × 200

Split insertions of the oblique extraocular muscles in Carnivora.

This study examines the presence or absence of split insertions (i.e., bifurcated/bifid tendons) in the oblique extraocular muscles (O-EOMs) in various carnivoran and non-carnivoran mammals. The O-EOMs were dissected in 44 mammalian orbital specimens (20 families, 36 species). Split insertions were present in Carnivora species exclusively. Split insertions were found in both superior oblique (SO) and inferior oblique (IO) muscles in all 6 Felidae specimens examined. The SO tendons split after the trochlea and coursed anterior and posterior to the global layer of the superior rectus (SR) before

The global serological prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in felids during the last five decades (1967-2017): a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Felids (domestic and wild cats) are important in the epidemiology of the parasite Toxoplasma gondii because they are the only hosts that can excrete the environmentally resistant oocysts. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to estimate the global prevalence of T. gondii in species of the family Felidae. METHODS: We searched seven databases (PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Proquest and Web of Science) for studies reporting seroprevalence of T. gondii in felids from 1967 to 31 December 2017. A total of 217 published papers, containing 223 datase

Feline herpesvirus infection and pathology in captive snow leopard.

Feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) is a common causative agent of domestic cats' rhinotracheitis in domestic cats, and it increasingly threatens wild felids worldwide. The endangered snow leopard (Panthera uncia) belongs to the family Felidae, and it is the top predator on the Tibetan Plateau. Here we report the identification and isolation of FHV-1 from three dead captive snow leopards that presented with sneezing and rhinorrhea. To explore the relationship between FHV-1 and their deaths, organs and nasal swabs were collected for histopathology, viral isolation and sequence analysis. The resul

Use of equine amniotic membrane free-island grafts for treatment of a midstromal corneal ulcer and descemetocele in a snow leopard (Panthera uncia).

CASE DESCRIPTION A 7-year-old sexually intact female snow leopard (Panthera uncia) was examined because of blepharospasm, periocular discharge, ventral deviation of the upper eyelid cilia, third eyelid prolapse, and corneal opacity of the right eye. CLINICAL FINDINGS An ophthalmic examination performed with the patient anesthetized revealed a 3 × 3-mm ulcer that extended approximately 60% of the depth of the right cornea and was accompanied by perilesional and intralesional cellular infiltrates and active vascularization. The upper eyelid of the right eye also had a previously repaired colobom

Using a Novel Absolute Ontogenetic Age Determination Technique to Calculate the Timing of Tooth Eruption in the Saber-Toothed Cat, Smilodon fatalis.

Despite the superb fossil record of the saber-toothed cat, Smilodon fatalis, ontogenetic age determination for this and other ancient species remains a challenge. The present study utilizes a new technique, a combination of data from stable oxygen isotope analyses and micro-computed tomography, to establish the eruption rate for the permanent upper canines in Smilodon fatalis. The results imply an eruption rate of 6.0 millimeters per month, which is similar to a previously published average enamel growth rate of the S. fatalis upper canines (5.8 millimeters per month). Utilizing the upper cani

Anti-mullerian hormone in felids: A systematic review.

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) is a dimeric glycoprotein that belongs to the transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily. This hormone that is produced by gonadal Sertoli cells in males and granulosa cells in females has been extensively studied in humans, rodents, and livestock species. Research on AMH in felids began in 2011 and given the increasing number of studies over recent years, an updated literature review is necessary to clarify and organize future research directions. The objective of this article was to conduct a systematic review of AMH in domestic and wild felids. From a lite

The genome of the black-footed cat: Revealing a rich natural history and urgent conservation priorities for small felids.

Habitat degradation and loss of genetic diversity are common threats faced by almost all of today's wild cats. Big cats, such as tigers and lions, are of great concern and have received considerable conservation attention through policies and international actions. However, knowledge of and conservation actions for small wild cats are lagging considerably behind. The black-footed cat, Felis nigripes, one of the smallest felid species, is experiencing increasing threats with a rapid reduction in population size. However, there is a lack of genetic information to assist in developing effective c

PREVALENCE OF CYSTINURIA IN SERVALS ( LEPTAILURUS SERVAL) IN THE UNITED STATES.

Cystinuria is a condition caused by defects in amino acid transport within the kidneys and small intestines. It has been reported in humans, dogs, domestic cats, ferrets, nondomestic canids, and nondomestic felids, including servals ( Leptailurus serval). Genetic mutations have been identified in dogs, humans, and domestic cats. Cystinuria usually follows an autosomal recessive inheritance, although it can be autosomal dominant and sex linked. The primary objective of this study was to screen urine samples dried on filter paper from captive servals in the United States for cystinuria by using

Craniometric Characteristics of Selected Carnivora Species Kept in Captivity in Relation to Bite Force and Bending Strength of the Upper Canines.

The aim of this study was to analyse the bite forces of seven species from three carnivore families: Canidae, Felidae, and Ursidae. The material consisted of complete, dry crania and mandibles. A total of 33 measurements were taken on each skull, mandible, temporomandibular joint, and teeth. The area of the temporalis and masseter muscles was calculated, as was the length of the arms of the forces acting on them. Based on the results, the bite force was calculated using a mathematical lever model. This study compared the estimated areas of the masticatory muscles and the bending strength of th

Muscular anatomy of the forelimb of Leopardus geoffroyi: Functional and phylogenetic aspects in Feliformia, Part II: Forearm, autopod, and quantitative analysis.

For cats (Felidae), the forelimb plays a crucial role in their lifestyle, both for locomotion and for hunting. While there are studies on the anatomy of large and medium-sized felids, there are few on small Neotropical felids such as Leopardus geoffroyi. The present work complements a previous study by describing in detail the muscles of the forearm and autopodium, comparing them in a functional and phylogenetic context with other Feliformia species, and providing the first muscle maps of these regions for L. geoffroyi. For this purpose, both forelimbs of three adult specimens of L. geoffroyi

Current practice for the chemical immobilisation of non-domestic feline species: An online survey study.

BACKGROUND: Safe chemical immobilisation of wild felids is essential for both conservational management and clinical purposes. However, little is known about drug protocols and current practice. METHODS: This study was designed as an online survey based on a questionnaire. Descriptive/correlation statistics and analysis of proportions were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The preferred immobilisation technique was the use of darts (37% of the respondents), while the most popular drug combination was a mixture of benzodiazepines, alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonists and dissociative anaesthetics (

Identifying priority landscapes for conservation of snow leopards in Pakistan.

Pakistan's total estimated snow leopard habitat is about 80,000 km2 of which about half is considered prime habitat. However, this preliminary demarcation was not always in close agreement with the actual distribution-the discrepancy may be huge at the local and regional level. Recent technological developments like camera trapping and molecular genetics allow for collecting reliable presence records that could be used to construct realistic species distribution based on empirical data and advanced mathematical approaches like MaxEnt. The current study followed this approach to construct an ac

Smilodon sabertooth bite marks, new perspectives on prey-predator models in South American Pleistocene.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, saber-toothed cats, particularly species of the genus Smilodon, were considered unable to bite through bones due to the apparent fragility of their teeth. We analyze here megafauna fossil remains of Salto de Piedra palaeontological site (Humid Pampas), one of the few extensively radiometrically dated Pleistocene sites in Argentina and systematically excavated. Salto de Piedra is located near contemporary human occupation sites that have yielded megafauna remains. This spatial and chronological proximity provides an exceptional scenario to compare the prey ranges hunt

Epidermal growth factor-containing fibulin-like extracellular matrix 1-derived amyloidosis with fatal gastric bleeding in a Tsushima leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus).

Epidermal growth factor-containing fibulin-like extracellular matrix 1 (EFEMP1)-derived amyloidosis causes gastrointestinal bleeding in humans. Amyloidosis has also been reported in the Tsushima leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis euptilurus) and rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta). However, the clinical signs and lesions in humans and animals differ. A captive Tsushima leopard cat, aged 19 years, died of haemorrhage due to a gastric ulcer and a pathological analysis was performed. Amyloid was deposited in the venous walls and interstitium of the systemic organs, especially the stomach and intes
