Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a complex immune-mediated disease caused by feline coronavirus (FCoV). Despite advancements in understanding its pathogenesis, challenges persist in elucidating viral factors related to virion composition and replication. This study examined FCoV-infected cats with and without FIP for potential associations with or variation in expression ratios for different viral genes. We analyzed tissue samples with FIP lesions from 46 cats with FIP and mesenteric lymph nodes from 10 FCoV-infected cats (7b RT-qPCR positive) without FIP with three RT-qPCR assays, targe

CASE SUMMARY: A 4-year-old, indoor-only male castrated domestic shorthair cat was referred after identification of cardiomegaly and pleural effusion by the primary veterinarian. Echocardiography revealed generalised left ventricular hypertrophy with left atrial enlargement, pleural effusion and a small amount of pericardial effusion. Therefore, congestive heart failure was suspected, and the patient was treated with furosemide (2 mg/kg PO q12h). Subsequent investigations included pleural fluid analysis, plasma cardiac troponin I and serum alpha-1 acid glycoprotein (AGP) measurements. Plasma ca

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is one of the most important infectious diseases and a significant cause of death in cats. While the pathology of FIP has been well documented, there is little information on the hepatic lesions. The aim of this study was to characterize the macroscopic, microscopic and immunohistochemical patterns of the liver lesions in cats with FIP. A retrospective study was conducted on 131 cats with FIP, of which 59 had histological inflammatory lesions in the liver and were immunopositive for feline coronavirus. Four major gross patterns were defined: perihepatitis (2

This paper describes six cases of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) in which an abdominal tumour had been suspected clinically. Pathological changes were mainly restricted to the massive enlargement of a mesenteric lymph node due to necrogranulomatous lymphadenitis. FIP was diagnosed on the basis of the immunohistological demonstration of coronavirus antigen in intact macrophages within the necrogranulomatous lesions. In the affected lymph node lymphoid tissue was either almost completely effaced or restricted to follicles composed mainly of variable numbers of blasts. From one to many plasm

A five-year-old male castrated domestic shorthair cat was referred for respiratory distress and pleural effusion. Echocardiography identified a moderate to severe volume of echogenic pericardial effusion (PCE), pericardial thickening, and a mild volume of anechoic pleural effusion. Computed tomography with intravenous contrast confirmed a large volume of PCE with concurrent pericardial thickening; a pericardiectomy was subsequently performed. Cytological analysis of the PCE was consistent with predominantly neutrophilic inflammation. Histopathology of the pericardium showed severe, pyogranulom

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) has long represented one of the most devastating and frustrating diseases in feline medicine. Historically regarded as almost universally fatal, the FIP paradigm has shifted dramatically over the past 5 to 10 years. Safe and effective antiviral therapies, including GS-441524 and related compounds, have transformed FIP into a treatable disease with survival rates previously unimaginable. In parallel, advances in molecular diagnostics and immunocytochemical techniques have improved antemortem diagnostic confidence. This review explores the evolving understandi

Antiviral drugs like EIDD-2801 (molnupiravir; MPV) have been successfully used in the treatment of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). The previous study of the pharmacokinetics of MPV in healthy cats showed promise for its use and safety. The objective was to determine the pharmacokinetics of molnupiravir in cats with naturally occurring FIP by measuring MPV and EIDD-193 (β-D-N4-hydroxycytidine; NHC) serum levels. Blood was collected from seven cats diagnosed with naturally occurring FIP treated at 1, 2, 4, 6 and 12 h post oral MPV administration and at 12 h post pill administration 7 days l

This study employed machine learning techniques to predict the rate of feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) diagnoses, with a specific focus on mutations in the spike protein gene of the feline coronavirus (FCoV). FIP is a fatal viral disease affecting the peritoneum of cats and is primarily caused by mutations in FCoV. Its diagnosis largely relies on evaluations of various biomarkers and clinical symptoms. The current analysis of FCoV spike protein gene mutations exhibits certain limitations. To address this problem, the present study employed a large dataset-comprising information on FCoV cop

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal disease that poses several challenges for veterinarians: clinical signs and laboratory changes are non-specific, and there are two pathotypes of the etiologic agent feline coronavirus (FCoV), sometimes referred to as feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) and feline infectious peritonitis virus (FIPV) that vary fundamentally in their virulence, but are indistinguishable by a number of diagnostic methods. This review focuses on all important steps every veterinary practitioner has to deal with and new diagnostic tests that can be considered when encount

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infection initiates monocyte-associated viremia and viral persistence. Virus-infected, -activated monocytes also trigger feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a fatal systemic disease of felids typified by granulomatous (peri)phlebitis. Currently, the exact mechanisms inducing monocyte activation and FIP are unknown. This study attempted to identify the potential immediate effect of virulent FCoV on colony-stimulating factor (CSF) (granulocyte (G)-CSF, monocyte (M)-CSF and granulocyte-monocyte (GM)-CSF levels through in vitro assessment, alongside prototypical pro- and

OBJECTIVES: Feline coronavirus (FCoV) infections are a widespread occurrence among feline populations globally. The FCoV family encompasses two distinct biotypes: feline enteric coronavirus (FECV) and feline infectious peritonitis viruses (FIPV). FECV infections are asymptomatic or result in only mild enteric disease, whereas FIPV can cause a high mortality rate. Distinguishing FIPV from FCoV is crucial for prompt treatment. High resolution Melting (HRM) technology can accurately solve this problem.
METHODS: In our work, one pair of primers was designed from the 7b gene of FCoV. There are thr

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is widespread in multi-cat environments. Although most infections are asymptomatic, FCoV may mutate into a virulent form responsible for feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a progressive and mostly fatal systemic disease. Controlling FCoV circulation in multi-cat environments is challenging, but desirable for feline health and breeding management. In this study, we evaluated the impact of stepwise management protocols with increasing stringency on viral shedding in 20 catteries across Flanders, Belgium. Each cattery was allocated to one of three eradication protocols

Feline coronavirus (FCoV) is a virus endemic in cat populations. Specific genomic mutations give it a strong tropism for macrophages, allowing systemic infection and the development of a disease known as feline infectious peritonitis. This disease takes various clinical presentations, and can manifest as uveitis. Two mutations in the spike protein have been identified as possibly associated with FIP: mutations M1058L and S1060A. 193 clinical samples of aqueous humor were collected, all PCR-positive for feline coronavirus. Samples were taken either from cats with a clinical picture compatible w

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led the medical and scientific community to address questions surrounding the pathogenesis and clinical presentation of COVID-19; however, relevant clinical models outside of humans are still lacking. In felines, a ubiquitous coronavirus, described as feline coronavirus (FCoV), can present as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)-a leading cause of mortality in young cats that is characterized as a severe, systemic inflammation. The diverse extrapulmonary signs of FIP and rapidly progressive disease course, coupled with a clos

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is characterised by the presence of systemic inflammation accompanied by oxidative stress. Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1) is a negative acute phase reactant produced by the liver. A paraoxon-based method has been validated to measure PON-1 activity in feline serum. The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of PON-1 activity as a biomarker to discriminate FIP from other diseases with similar clinical signs. Of 159 cats enrolled, 71 were healthy, 34 had FIP and 54 had another disease but presented with clinical signs that could be consistent with FIP. PON

BACKGROUND: Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a fatal immune-mediated disease in cat, caused by mutated feline coronavirus (FCoV). Due to its difficulties in diagnosis, FIP is sometimes underdiagnosed. Therefore, several laboratory procedures were performed to gain high index suspicion of FIP. However, through several laboratory findings, not only FIP but also SEZ infection was confirmed in this case.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A-year-old male, domestic cat was admitted to Veterinary Medicine Clinical Pathology Laboratory, Universitas Gadjah Mada, for further effusion examination due to its high
