Pelvic Endoprosthesis after Hemipelvectomy Using a 3D-Printed Osteotomy Guide for Infiltrative Osteoma in a Cat.

With the development of 3D printing and surgical techniques, various defect reconstruction methods after tumor resection have been applied not only in humans but also in veterinary medicine. This report describes a case of reconstruction after hemipelvectomy for an osteoma in a cat using a 3D-printed pelvic endoprosthesis and micro total hip replacement (mTHR). A 5-year-old spayed female Turkish Angora cat was referred for a 1-month history of constipation and intermittent weight-bearing lameness in the left hindlimb. An osteoma in the pelvis measuring 4.5 × 3 × 5.4 cm was identified based on

Successful surgical treatment for huge retroperitoneal liposarcoma involving the pancreas, right kidney, abdominal aorta and inferior vena cava.

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare neoplasm that often involves other organs and major blood vessels. Complete surgical resection with negative margins is the only potential curative treatment. Here, we report the case of a patient with a large retroperitoneum liposarcoma that was removed by resection of the descending abdominal aorta and infrahepatic inferior vena cava, right nephrectomy and pancreatoduodenectomy following creation of an extra anatomical femoro-femoral crossover bypass after left axillo-left femoral bypass. The patient developed leg edema for a few weeks after surgery but

[Parathyroid carcinoma: diagnosis by a femur fracture].

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma of the parathyroid gland (PC) described by De Quervain since 1909, it represents the least common neoplasm, with an incidence of 1,25/10,000,000 peoples. It has been reported approximately 1,000 cases of CP in world literature. There are two series in Mexico, one of eight patients and other with four cases. Because CP is functionally active, its early clinical behavior is similar to that of parathyroid benign neoplasms. CLINICAL CASE: A 66-year-old female with history of thighbone pain and spontaneous femoral fracture, osteolytic lesions, hypercalcemia, elevated levels o

Primary leiomyosarcoma originating from the deep femoral vein initially presenting as chronic deep vein thrombosis: A case report and review of literature.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare and aggressive smooth muscle tumor, and venous leiomyosarcoma (VLMS) is an uncommon subtype, with majority of the cases involving the vena cava. We report a case of a 56-year-old patient initially diagnosed as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the common femoral vein who was later diagnosed with primary VLMS originating from the deep femoral vein. Despite anticoagulation therapy, leg edema persisted and imaging studies revealed an intraluminal mass with increased extent and size. Initial duplex ultrasound suggested chronic DVT; however subsequent contrast-enhanced co

Adverse effects of growth hormone replacement therapy in children.

Human growth hormone (hGH) replacement therapy has been widely available for clinical purposes for more than fifty years. Starting in 1958, hGH was obtained from cadaveric pituitaries, but in 1985 the association between hGH therapy and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease was reported. In the same year, the use of recombinant hGH (rhGH) was approved. Side effects of rhGH replacement therapy in children and adolescents include rash and pain at injection site, transient fever, prepubertal gynecomastia, arthralgia, edema, benign intracranial hypertension, insulin resistance, progression of scoliosis, and s

Mandibular intraosseous lipoma: clinical features of a condylar location.

Lipomas are common benign neoplasms affecting many adipose tissue-containing organs of the body, including bone. Central lesions in bone account for less than 1% of all lipomas. In the literature, intraosseous lipomas have been reported in various bones such as the frontal and parietal bones, ribs, ulna, phalanges of hand and foot, femoral neck, fibula and calcaneum. No preference has been described for gender or race. As far as the authors know, there have been no documented cases of intraosseous lipoma involving the temporomandibular joint. This report describes a rare case of mandibular int

Chondromyxoid fibroma of the femur: a case report with intra-cortical location.

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is the least common benign cartilaginous tumor, comprising less than 0.5 to 1% of all skeletal neoplasms. This subject was a 16-year-old female with a three-year history of pain involving the distal femoral metaphysis. This case showed an unusual feature: it was intracortical in location. Radiologic differential diagnosis included metaphyseal fibrous defect, periosteal chondroma, simple or aneurysmal bone cyst, and cortical abscess. On operation, the lesion filled the intracortical defect with whitish myxoid soft tissue, bulging into the adjacent soft tissue. Micros

Thick lips, bumpy tongue, and slipped capital femoral epiphysis--a deadly combination.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2b (MEN 2b) is a rare genetic disorder. Affected individuals have malignant thyroid tumors, pheochromocytoma, and ganglioneuromatosis. The musculoskeletal manifestations of MEN 2b include a Marfanoid habitus, pes cavus, scoliosis, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, joint laxity, poor muscle development, and delayed maturation. The initial clinical presentation of MEN 2b frequently involves the musculoskeletal system. The characteristics ganglioneuromatosis of the lips and tongue, however, should alert the orthopedic surgeon to the underlying disorder. Effectiv

Comprehensive meta-analytical summary on human papillomavirus association with head and neck cancer.

Parathyroid carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of the parathyroid glands which results in enlargement and excessive production of parathyroid hormone (PTH) responsible for pathologically raising calcium levels in the blood resulting in bone pain/fractures, renal stones and other signs of hypercalcaemia. A 37 year old woman presented with sudden, spontaneous bone pain and fracture of the right femoral shaft. This unusual presentation was explained by extremely high PTH levels and hypercalcaemia in the blood and a hard, solitary mass palpable in the neck. During surgical excision of this mas

Development of Angiosarcoma in a Saphenous Vein Graft after Femoral to Above-Knee Popliteal Artery Bypass.

Angiosarcoma is an exceedingly rare and aggressive neoplasm. Owing to early metastasis even in low-grade tumors, it is associated with poor survival. We report a late development of an angiosarcoma in a saphenous vein graft after a femoral artery to above-knee popliteal artery bypass performed for disabling claudication. Chronic inflammation, lymphatic disruption, and thrombosis of the graft may have contributed to the malignant transformation, similar to cases described as occurring after arteriovenous fistulae creation. This case illustrates that angiosarcoma may be a rare, late complication

Follicular Lymphoma Showing Avid Uptake on 68Ga PSMA-HBED-CC PET/CT.

Ga prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT is a new imaging technique that is significantly more sensitive to prostate cancer lesions than other conventional imaging modalities. Various other benign and malignant neoplasms may also express PSMA and show uptake on PSMA PET/CT scan. We report a case of 66-year-old man who had a PSMA PET/CT scan for restaging of prostate carcinoma. A PSMA-avid left femoral lymph node was identified. Subsequent biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of follicular lymphoma. It is important to be aware of this possibility to avoid scan misinterpretation. Biopsy of

[Multiple myeloma with significant multifocal osteolysis in a dog without a detectible gammopathy].

Description of a variant of multiple myeloma in a dog lacking the gammopathy normally associated with this type of neoplasm. A Border Collie mongrel was presented with symptoms of progressive hind-leg weakness, lethargy and tiredness, which had started to appear 6 weeks previously. Radiographic examination showed small osteolytic areas in the spinal column, but also diffuse small areas of increased opacity as well as evidence of decreased bone density in the pelvis and of both femoral necks. Moderate regenerative anaemia, hypogammopathy and hypercalcaemia were diagnosed. Computed tomography sc

Imaging of groin masses: inguinal anatomy and pathologic conditions revisited.

The groin region is subdivided into two distinct anatomic areas: the inguinal canal and the femoral triangle. A series of cross-sectional imaging cases illustrate that a good understanding of the local anatomic characteristics of the groin allows confident characterization of groin pathologic conditions. Such conditions can be classified into five major groups: congenital abnormalities, noncongenital hernias, vascular conditions, infectious or inflammatory processes, and neoplasms. Congenital entities include hernias, cysts, undescended testis, and retractile testes. Ultrasound (US) is useful

Primary retroperitoneal pseudomyxoma masquerading as a benign retroperitoneal abscess from an ascending colon subacute perforation: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Pseudomyxoma peritonei is a neoplastic process characterized by diffuse mucinous implants on peritoneal surfaces arising from mucin-producing tumors. Rarely, pseudomyxoma from a ruptured mucin-producing tumor can be confined to the retroperitoneum, termed "retroperitoneal pseudomyxoma" or "extraperitoneal pseudomyxoma." This entity often masquerades as a retroperitoneal abscess of benign etiology. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man presented with a symptomatic retroperitoneal cystic mass with a fistulous communication to the ascending colon seen at colonoscopy,

Emergency embolisation of acute adrenal gland haemorrhages due to underlying neoplasms - multicentre experience and literature overview.

PURPOSE: Acute adrenal haemorrhage is a rare occurrence caused most commonly by trauma or ruptured neoplasms. In the case of the latter, rapid adrenal tumour growth resulting in elevated intracapsular pressure leads to capsular tear and massive retroperitoneal bleeding. Endovascular embolisation has been reported as a successful and safe method of treatment in selected patients. The aim of this paper was to report multicentre experience with endovascular treatment of patients presenting with acute adrenal gland haemorrhages caused by neoplasms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a multi-centre ret

Pancreatic Fistula Extending into the Thigh Caused by the Rupture of an Intraductal Papillary Mucinous Adenoma of the Pancreas.

We herein report the first case of a pancreatic fistula extending into the thigh caused by the rupture of an intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas. An 80-year-old man was suspected to have necrotizing fasciitis because of right femoral pain. Computed tomography showed fluid retention from the pancreatic head to the right iliopsoas muscle and an IPMN at the pancreatic head. The findings of endoscopic retrograde pancreatography led to the suspicion of a minor leak and a pancreatic stent was placed. The patient died due to an uncontrollable infection. A pathological autop

The Correlation of Surgeon Subspecialty With Outcomes Following Surgery for Geriatric Femoral Neck Fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Geriatric femoral neck fractures are common and typically managed with hemiarthroplasty (HA), total hip arthroplasty (THA), or percutaneous pinning (PP) by an on-call physician. The current study assessed if perioperative or longer-term outcomes correlated with orthopaedic surgeon subspecialty. METHODS: The 2016 to 2022 PearlDiver M161 Ortho administrative data set was used to identify patients >65 years who underwent HA, THA, or PP for femoral neck fracture. The subspecialty of the treating surgeon was defined as arthroplasty, trauma, or nonarthroplasty/nontrauma. Exclusion cri

Extensive adhesion formation in a total knee replacement in the setting of a gastrointestinal stromal tumor: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are rare primary neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, accounting for 1% to 2% of all gastrointestinal neoplasms worldwide. GISTs are frequently discovered incidentally during workup for other diagnosis or intestinal obstruction, as they can present with few or no symptoms. Simultaneously, GISTs confer a high degree of malignant transformation, with a progression in about 10% to 30% of cases. CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old healthy female presented to our institution with complaints of right knee pain and limited passive and active motion in

Acute paraplegia in a young adult long-evans rat resulting from T-cell lymphoma.

We describe an unusual case of acute paraplegia in a young adult (7.5-month-old) Long-Evans rat that resulted from a spontaneous T-cell lymphoma. At presentation, a neurologic exam revealed normal pelvic limb flexor reflexes, the absence of an anal reflex, and deep pain recognition. Radiographs did not identify any obvious spinal abnormality or osseous trauma, although the liver and spleen were prominent. Hematologic analysis disclosed leukocytosis with atypical lymphocytes. At necropsy, red, friable to gelatinous masses were found associated with the ventral aspect of the vertebral column at
