OBJECTIVE: The physiological persistence of fetal cells in the circulation and tissue of a previously pregnant woman is called fetal cell microchimerism (FCM). It has been hypothesized to play a role in systemic autoimmune disease; however, only limited data are available regarding its role in autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD).
DESIGN: Circulating FCM was analyzed in a large series of previously pregnant women with Graves' disease (GD), Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), or no disease (healthy controls (HCs)). To exclude the possible bias related to placental factors, the polymorphic pattern of hu

An alteration in cell/matrix interactions is one of the suggested mechanisms leading to cyst formation in polycystic kidney diseases. Most of these interactions are mediated by beta 1-integrins, a subfamily of integrin receptors, formed by the association of the beta 1-chain with different alpha-subunits. To date, no study on alpha-integrin subunit distribution during the early stages of cyst development has been reported. Using immunofluorescence, we analyzed the distribution of alpha-integrin subunits (alpha 1, alpha 2, alpha 3, alpha 5, and alpha 6) and basement membrane proteins in kidneys

Zoonotic infections constitute a major cause of reproductive failure and perinatal mortality in humans and animals. Among the most relevant etiological agents are Listeria monocytogenes, Brucella spp., and Toxoplasma gondii, which, despite distinct biological properties, share the capacity to breach placental defenses, establish intracellular niches, and impair fetal development. This review aims to synthesize current knowledge on the pathological and pathogenic mechanisms underlying fetal and neonatal death associated with these pathogens, with a focus on placental infection, vertical transmi

Chondrodysplasia punctata (CDP) is a skeletal abnormality characterized by premature calcification that is usually noticeable in the prenatal period and infancy. Etiologically, the condition is heterogeneous, and the causes include fetal conditions such as chromosome abnormalities, peroxisomal disorders, lysosomal storage disorders, cholesterol synthesis defects and abnormal vitamin K metabolism, as well as maternal diseases such as severe malabsorption and exposure to teratogens. An association between CDP and maternal autoimmune disease was first observed and reported by Curry et al and Cost

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities of the fetal pulmonary vasculature may affect lung morphogenesis. Postnatal studies have suggested that pulmonary hypoplasia (PH) may be associated with congenital heart diseases (CHDs).
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of PH associated with CHDs, and to evaluate whether CHDs with right outflow obstruction were associated with the highest risk of lung growth impairment.
METHODS: Between January 2006 and December 2010, fetuses with CHD obtained following the termination of pregnancies due to fetal abnormalities were examined in a prospective manner for the dete

The outcome of cardiac disease diagnosed before birth is paradoxically worse than that diagnosed postnatally. In part, this is because fetal screening detects cases that are already showing failure of cardiac growth which are usually progressive with secondary damage to the myocardium, lungs and brain. Fetal valvuloplasty has been proposed for cases of critical aortic and pulmonary stenosis or atresia, and atrial septostomy for a restrictive oval foramen associated with aortic stenosis, hypoplastic left heart syndrome and transposition of the great arteries. The rationale for fetal therapy is

The relationship between events occurring during intrauterine development and later-life predisposition to long-term disease, has been described. The fetus responds to excess intrauterine exposure to high levels of corticosteroids, modifying their physiological development and stopping their growth. Fetal exposure to elevated levels of either endogenous (alterations in fetal hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis) or synthetic corticosteroids, is one model of early-life adversity; to developing adult disease. At the molecular level, there are transcriptional changes in metabolic and growth pathwa

Long-term adaptive changes occurring in a developing fetus in response to unstable in utero environmental conditions, which appear at a particular time (critical window), are called intrauterine or fetal programming. These adaptive changes are beneficial during the intrauterine period because they adapt the fetus to current needs, but may turn out to be harmful in the end and lead to development of chronic diseases in adult life. Fetal programming means the structural and functional changing of an organism, metabolism and function of some cells, tissues and systems, that occur even despite int

We have examined the relationships between maternal connective tissue disease (CTD), fetal and neonatal health, and the presence of specific autoantibodies: antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-Ro, antiLa, anti-Sm, anti-RNP, anti-DNA, and anticardiolipin (ACL) in 27 mothers with CTD (Group A), and 10 asymptomatic mothers of babies with complete congenital heart block (CCHB), or cardiac arrhythmias (Group B). Compared to 100 normal pregnant controls, autoantibodies were significantly more common in both Group A (96.3%, p less than 0.0005) and Group B (70%, p less than 0.0005), although the preval

The pathology of fetal and neonatal liver disease is reviewed and particular emphasis is laid on discriminating between diseases of known aetiology or of genetic importance and idiopathic disorders. These are discussed in relation to the particular metabolic differences between the fetal an neonatal liver and the adult liver. Common disorders such as rhesus isoimmunization are only touched on in respect of their effects on the metabolic function of the liver. The importance of iatrogenic disease in this age group is stressed.

Microchimerism is defined by the presence of circulating cells, bi-directionally transferred from one genetically distinct individual to another. The acquisition and persistence of fetal cell microchimerism, small numbers of genetically disparate cells from the fetus in the mother, is now a well-recognized consequence of normal pregnancy. Some of the autoimmune diseases that show a predilection for women in their child-bearing years and beyond are linked to fetal microchimerism from previous pregnancies. Microchimerism has been investigated in different autoimmune disorders, such as systemic s

Fetal cell microchimerism is defined as the persistence of fetal cells in the mother after birth without any apparent rejection. Fetal microchimeric cells (FMCs) engraft into the maternal bone marrow for decades after delivery and are able to migrate to blood and tissues. This phenomenon was hypothesized to have a detrimental role in autoimmune diseases, but data are still controversial and debated. In malignant tumors, fetal cell microchimerism has been postulated to have a positive effect on tumor burden, although some evidence suggests that FMCs may be involved in neoplastic progression. At

Both maternal isoimmunization and maternal autoimmune disease are associated with fetal death. For isoimmunization the immunologic nature of fetal death (hydrops fetalis) is beyond question, but many of the details are poorly understood. It would be extremely helpful to know what immunologic factors are responsible for the wide variation in the degree of fetal hemolysis. This information would surely lead to improved management of isoimmunized pregnancies and create new and more successful therapies for fetuses at risk for hemolysis. The immunology of autoimmune-associated fetal death is, for

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of Tei index in differentiating fetal Hb Bart's disease in pregnancies at risk in the first half of pregnancy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Pregnancies meeting the inclusion criteria were consecutively recruited to the study. The inclusion criteria were as follows: 1) singleton pregnancies, 2) gestational age of 12 - 20 weeks, 3) at risk of Hb Bart's disease, 4) confirmed fetal diagnosis of Hb Bart's disease. Fetuses with frank hydrops fetalis or fetuses with chromosomal abnormalities or structural anomalies were excluded. Tei index was performed and immediately

Fetal lung development is a crucial and complex process that lays the groundwork for postnatal respiratory health. However, disruptions in this delicate developmental journey can lead to fetal lung development disorders, impacting neonatal outcomes and potentially influencing health outcomes well into adulthood. Recent research has shed light on the intriguing association between fetal lung development disorders and the development of adult diseases. Understanding these links can provide valuable insights into the developmental origins of health and disease, paving the way for targeted prevent
