Fetal mortality in sibships of cases with neural tube defects.

Rates of fetal mortality in sibships of probands with neural tube defects (NTDs) may reflect liability to NTDs. Expectations from the multifactorial model predict that fetal loss should be higher in sibships of male probands; in multiplex sibships; and sibships where the proband had no additional malformations. This was analysed for 715 pregnancies from 398 sibships. In general, the results did not support the expectations of the multifactorial model.

Fetal mortality in sibships of cases with neural tube defects.

It has been suggested that rates of fetal mortality in sibships of probands with a malformation inherited as a multifactorial threshold trait may reflect their liability to the malformation. If so, spontaneous abortion rates should be more frequent in sibships thought to have greater liability. For anencephaly and spina bifida (ASB), then, spontaneous abortion should be higher in the sibships of male probands and in families with more than one affected case (multiplex families). This hypothesis was tested using data on cases from The Montréal Children's Hospital and from the literature. Approx

Fetal heart diseases and neonatal mortality: Risk factors and management.

PURPOSE: Fetal heart diseases significantly contribute to neonatal mortality. Improved prenatal diagnostics enable defect detection before delivery, emphasizing the need for a personalized approach to address anomalies and predict outcomes. Categorizing diseases into risk classes aids obstetricians in counseling and delivery decisions. This study classifies fetal heart diseases by severity, examining factors related to maternal, fetal, and delivery that affect neonatal mortality. The aim is to identify key determinants of neonatal mortality and create an individual approach to assess and manag

Maternal hypomagnesemia causes placental abnormalities and fetal and postnatal mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Magnesium (Mg(2+)) is essential for cellular growth and the maintenance of normal cellular processes. However, little is known about how maternal hypomagnesemia during pregnancy affects fetal growth and development. This study investigated the effects of maternal hypomagnesemia on the late gestation placenta and fetus, and postnatal outcomes until weaning. METHODS: Female CD1 mice consumed a control (0.2% w/w Mg(2+)), moderately Mg(2+) deficient (MMD; 0.02% w/w Mg(2+)) or severely Mg(2+) deficient (SMD; 0.005% w/w Mg(2+)) diet for 4 weeks prior to mating and throughout pregnancy

Assessment of Healthy Start Fetal and Infant Mortality Review recommendations.

OBJECTIVES: We examine the scope and nature of the recommendations that emerged from the Healthy Start Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) projects and explore their use to promote systems change. METHODS: The FIMR process of 16 of the 22 federal Healthy Start projects was reviewed. We analyzed data from a June 1996 survey developed and administered by the MCH Bureau which gathered information about recommendations produced by the FIMRs. We supplemented these data with information gathered through follow-up telephone interviews and by abstracting information from grant documents. RESULT

[Monitoring and intervention of infant mortality rate and fetal and infant mortality rate in Beijing, 1992-2000].

OBJECTIVE: To monitor the changing trend of infant mortality rate (IMR) and fetal and infant mortality rate (FIM) in Beijing and to develop proper measures to decrease these two rates. METHODS: Dynamic series analysis was used to analyze the monitoring data of 590,833 cases of live birth, 5,835 cases of infant death, and 10,499 cases of stillbirth in Beijing during 1992-2000. The interventional measures in different phases were analyzed too. RESULTS: The IMR and FIMR in Beijing were 12.42% and 19.43% respectively in 1992 and were reduced to 6.84% and 15.79% respectively in 2000. The IMR and

Maternal mortality in a maternal-fetal medicine intensive care unit.

Maternal mortality in a large, tertiary-care, intensive care, referral center was reviewed for a six-year period. The first three years of the review were prior to the institution of a maternal-fetal medicine intensive care unit, located in the labor-and-delivery suite. The subsequent three years encompassed a period during which an intensive care unit staffed by maternal-fetal medicine specialists and obstetric anesthesiologists was established in the labor-and-delivery suite. The maternal mortality rate was 21.7/100,000, or 10 maternal deaths in 45,984 deliveries, prior to establishment of t

[Repercussions of premature rupture of fetal membranes on neonatal morbidity and mortality].

The objective of this study was to analyze factors associated with death and survival with sequelae in neonates after premature rupture of fetal membranes (PROM). An observational historical cohort study analyzed charts of patients with PROM at < or = 34 weeks gestation. The variables were compared with neonatal death and survival with sequelae as the outcomes. In both groups, the data were submitted to bivariate analysis, and the variables showing significance were submitted to logistic regression. The final multivariate model for fetal death showed statistical significance for the following:

Causes of fetal and neonatal mortality in a South African black community.

Little has been published about the underlying disorders responsible for the high perinatal mortality rates found in African cities. We searched for answers by identifying the causes of fetal and neonatal death in Blacks living in and around Durban. A 91% autopsy rate was achieved when 506 postmortem examinations were performed in 557 consecutive cases of fetal and early neonatal death. The perinatal mortality rates were 55/1000 for single births and 170/1000 for twins; 29% of the deaths were due to amniotic fluid infections, 9% to abruptio placentae, 5% to birth trauma, 4% to congenital syphi

Causes of fetal and neonatal mortality by race in a selected U.S. population.

In a large prospective study (1959--1966), the perinatal mortality rate for U.S. Whites was 34 deaths per 1000 total births, for Blacks 51/1000, for Puerto Ricans 41/1000, and for Orientals 23/1000. A number of disorders were responsible for these differences. Premature rupture of the fetal membranes occurred 92 per cent more often in Blacks than in Whites, marked placental growth retardation 56 per cent more often, amniotic fluid infections 45 per cent more often, and major congenital malformations 15 per cent more often. Most other disorders were less common in Blacks than in Whites. Stratif

Effects of melatonin treatment on twin pregnancy and fetal mortality in sheep.

This study is the first to examine the effects of melatonin implants on the litter size and fetal mortality rate of Blanc du Massif Central ewes in Hungary. The ewes were divided into two experimental groups: group A: 96 ewes were treated with melatonin implants and group B: 114 ewes was the control group. The number of twin litters was significantly larger in group A than in group B, whereas the fetal mortality rate was significantly lower in the melatonin treated group than in the control group. These findings suggest that melatonin implants may provide significant benefits for sheep product

Trends in Maternal, Fetal, and Infant Mortality in the US, 2000-2023.

IMPORTANCE: Accurately measuring maternal mortality trends has been challenging due to changes in data collection. This work disambiguates trends from the effects of introducing the pregnancy checkbox on death certificates and also analyzes closely related fetal and infant mortality. OBJECTIVE: To describe trends in maternal, fetal, and infant deaths since 2000, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A national, population-level, epidemiological, cross-sectional analysis during 2000 to 2023 was conducted as well as a staggered difference-in-differen

A meta-analysis of selected maternal and fetal factors for perinatal mortality.

BACKGROUND: In several developing countries, achieving Millennium Development Goal 4 is still off track. Multiple maternal and fetal risk factors were inconsistently attributed to the high perinatal mortality in developing countries. However, there was no meta-analysis that assessed the pooled effect of these factors on perinatal mortality. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to identify maternal and fetal factors predicting perinatal mortality. METHODS: In this meta-analysis, we included 23 studies that assessed perinatal mortality in relation to antenatal care, parity, mode of delivery, g

Mortality rates in subjects with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders and their siblings.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to estimate the mortality rate in subjects with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and their siblings whose FASD status was unknown. METHODS: We used the state FASD Registry to link subjects with FASD to a North Dakota birth certificate. We were able to link 304 of 486 cases (63%). We used the birth certificates to identify the mother and children born to the mother (siblings). We then searched for death certificates for both the FASD cases and their siblings. We then calculated the annual and age-adjusted mortality rates for the siblings of the Registry cas

The evolution of fetal and infant mortality review as a public health strategy.

Infant mortality review (IMR), the forerunner of fetal and infant mortality review (FIMR), emerged at the national level in the mid-1980s as a promising method to improve understanding of local factors contributing to infant mortality and to motivate community response. Building on federal efforts to enhance data capacity and early state and local infant mortality case review studies, the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) initiated its IMR Program in 1988. Key actions taken to refine and diffuse the IMR/FIMR method include forging a public-private partnership between MCHB and the
