Ultrasound measurements of fetal breathing movements in the rat.

The goal of this study was to determine when fetal breathing movements (FBMs) commence in the rat and to characterize age-dependent changes of FBMs in utero. These data provide a frame of reference for parallel in vitro studies of the cellular, synaptic, and network properties of the perinatal rat respiratory system. Ultrasound recordings were made from unanesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats from embryonic (E) day 15 (E15) to E20. Furthermore, the effects of respiratory stimulants (doxapram and aminophylline) and hypoxia on FBMs were studied. Single FBMs, occurring at a very low frequency (approxi

Fetal pulmonary development: the role of respiratory movements.

The lung develops before birth as a collapsible, liquid-filled, organ. Throughout the later stages of gestation the fetal lungs are maintained at a level of expansion that is considerably greater than the level achieved as a result of passive equilibration between lung recoil and the chest wall. Fetal breathing movements (FBM) are a feature of normal fetal life and, as such, are used clinically in the assessment of fetal wellbeing. By opposing lung recoil, FBM help to maintain the high level of lung expansion that is now known to be essential for normal growth and structural maturation of the

[Intrauterine fetal movements and their significance for the condition of the fetus].

A literature review reports the results of investigations about fetal intrauterine activity. Different methods of observation are demonstrated and discussed. The results indicate that real-time-ultrasound is an accurate method for observation of fetal movements. Different patterns are identified: 1. Fetal body and extremity movements Development of fetal activity in early pregnancy is looked at as a process of maturation associated with fetal cerebral function. After 12 weeks of pregnancy typical patterns are established and seen also in the following weeks. Different results are reported abou

Fetal breathing movements in oligohydramnios are not increased by aminoinfusion.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether fetal breathing movements (FBM) in pregnancies with oligohydramnios change with restoration of amniotic fluid volume. DESIGN: A prospective experimental study. SETTING: Fetal Medicine Unit, tertiary referral hospital. SUBJECTS: 16 women with singleton pregnancies complicated by severe oligohydramnios. INTERVENTIONS: Restoration of amniotic fluid volume by transabdominal amnioinfusion. Controls comprised pregnancies in which infused fluid leaked vaginally, so that oligohydramnios was not corrected. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Change in total breathing movements,

Fetal movements in human pregnancies in the third trimester.

Fetal movements (FM) were measured using a real-time B-scan method in 50 women in the third trimester. One hundred ninety-five observations were made. The number of FM per 20-minute observation period was similar in normal, diabetic, and hypertensive pregnancies and in patients with placenta previa, but was significantly lower in patients with Rh isoimmunization and an affected fetus. The number of FM did not vary with gestational age, mode of delivery, or birth weight and was significantly increased in patients either with a reactive nonstress test (NST) or in the presence of fetal breathing

Fetal movement monitoring: how are we doing as educators?

OBJECTIVE: When decreased fetal movement is noticed, delay in seeking care is associated with poor perinatal outcomes, including stillbirth. Health care providers are responsible for educating women about normal fetal movement and the appropriate actions they should take if it decreases. This study aimed to demonstrate our pregnant population's understanding of normal fetal movement and responses to decreased fetal movement, and to potentially guide educational interventions to improve perinatal outcomes. METHODS: We surveyed 304 pregnant women (over 26 weeks' gestation) during clinic visits

Fetal cardiovascular and breathing movement responses to endogenous opiates.

Endogenous opiates have been shown to alter cardiopulmonary activity in a variety of animal models. The present investigation in fetal sheep evaluate the response of heart rate, blood pressure and breathing movements (FBM) to central nervous and intravenous meth-enkephalin and beta-endorphin. Marked bradycardia was noted within 3-5 s of intravenous meth-enkephalin administration and lasted less than 10-15 s. An 84.8 +/- 19.0% prolongation in cardiac cycle length was observed after 20 nmol/kg meth-enkephalin (p less than 0.02). In contrast, there was no significant change in heart rate followin

Maternal perception of sound-provoked fetal movement as a test of antepartum fetal wellbeing.

Maternal perception of sound-provoked fetal movement test was studied on 506 occasions in 443 women with obstetric or medical antenatal risk factors after 26 weeks gestation. The response was compared with a nonstress test (NST) performed immediately after a three-second vibroacoustic stimulation with an electronic artificial larynx. A positive response to sound stimulation, recorded as a fetal movement by the mother, occurred on 497 occasions (97.3%) and was accompanied by a reactive NST on 484 occasions; giving a specificity of 99.6 per cent and a negative predictive value of 97.4 per cent.

Excessive fetal movements are a sign of fetal compromise which merits further examination.

Changes in fetal movement are associated with increased risk of stillbirth after 28 weeks of pregnancy. The majority of studies have focussed on maternal perception of reduced fetal movements, which is associated with stillbirth via placental dysfunction. Recent studies have also described an association between a single episode of excessive fetal movements and late stillbirth. We present a hypothesis that a sudden episode of excessive fetal activity indicates fetal compromise relating to underlying disturbance of the in utero environment, which if it persists can lead to fetal death. The orig

The ultrasonographic assessment of the fetal thorax and fetal breathing movements in the prediction of pulmonary hypoplasia.

Comparison was made of fetal breathing movements (FBM) and thoracic measurements in the prenatal diagnosis of pulmonary hypoplasia. In 20 pregnancies with oligohydramnios due to premature and prolonged rupture of the membranes (PROM) the presence or absence of FBM was assessed, the internal thoracic and cardiac circumferences were measured and the internal thoracic and lung areas calculated. All 5 infants with absent FBM died from pulmonary hypoplasia in the neonatal period and all 15 with FBM present survived. The internal thoracic circumference of 3 of the fetuses that developed pulmonary hy

Clinical utility of inpatient monitoring for reduced fetal movements in the absence of fetal pathology.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the follow-up of women with reduced fetal movements (RFM) and physiological fetal parameters at initial assessment is limited. We evaluated whether inpatient monitoring provides additional clinical value in this population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In this retrospective study, women with a first episode of RFM and physiological fetal assessment (by means of cardiotocography, single deepest vertical pocket, estimated fetal weight, and umbilical artery Doppler) between January 2017 and December 2025 were identified and their clinical course and inpatient monitoring was anal

A Case Report of Decreased Fetal Movement During Fetomaternal Hemorrhage.

Fetomaternal hemorrhage is a rare, potentially catastrophic event for a fetus.  Leakage of the fetus's blood into the mother's circulation can cause fetal anemia, hydrops, and even death.  The prevailing symptom is decreased fetal movement, and signs can include a sinusoidal electronic fetal monitor pattern, a positive Kleihauer-Betke test, or changes in fetal Doppler blood flow.  A mother's report or perception of decreased fetal movement coupled with a nonreactive nonstress test or abnormal ultrasound findings should prompt an investigation into underlying causes.

Gross movement counting of fetuses conceived with assisted reproductive technology using a fetal movement acceleration measurement recorder.

To investigate whether assisted reproductive technology (ART) affects gross fetal movement. A prospective cohort study. 65 women who conceived with ART (ART group) and 211 women (control group) without ART recorded fetal movement with the fetal movement acceleration measurement recorder at night weekly after 28 weeks. The number ratio of 10 s epochs with fetal movement to all epochs was calculated as the fetal movement parameter. When no fetal movement was observed for more than 5 min, it was defined as a no fetal movement period, and the average number per hour, the average duration, and the

Perinatal outcomes of reduced fetal movements: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The perception of reduced fetal movement (RFM) is an important marker of fetal wellbeing and is associated with poor perinatal outcome (such as intra-uterine death). METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of women presenting with RFM over 28 weeks' gestation to a tertiary-level maternity hospital. We examined pregnancy outcomes and compared them to a retrospectively collected control group delivering contemporaneously. RESULTS: In total, 275 presentations were analysed in the RFM group, with 264 in the control group. Women with RFM were more likely to be nulliparous (p = 0.002

Does reduction of amniotic fluid affect fetal movements?

The effect of the amount of amniotic fluid on the form of fetal general movements was studied longitudinally in 19 pregnancies complicated by premature rupture of the amniotic membranes (PROM). Before birth, general movements were studied weekly by means of 1-h ultrasound observations, performed under standardized conditions. In the early postnatal period, 11 of these infants were followed with video recordings of their spontaneous movements. In the fetus, speed and amplitude of general movements were directly related to the reduction in amniotic fluid. A moderate reduction of amniotic fluid w

The use of daily fetal movement records in a clinical setting.

A variety of biochemical and biophysical techniques are used for the assessment of fetal well-being in high-risk pregnancy. Based on clinical experience, the daily fetal movement record has been found to be an inexpensive, non-invasive, simple tool that may be used for the continuous assessment of the fetus by the mother. The daily fetal movement record may predict fetal distress occurring in the interim between other assessments. Patients are instructed to count the number of fetal movements perceived in a 30-minute period, three times per day. The daily fetal movement record is a screening t

The central control of fetal breathing and skeletal muscle movements.

Breathing movements in the sheep fetus have been observed from a gestational age of about 40 days. From 95 to 115 days fetal breathing movements are almost continuous, interrupted by apnoea rarely exceeding 2 min. From 115 days until term (about 147 days) breathing and movements of the trunk and limbs are episodic. Breathing normally occurs only during rapid-eye-movement sleep as identified by low-voltage cortical electrical activity. Active movements of the neck muscles occur predominantly in high-voltage electrocortical activity. Hypercapnia or acid cerebrospinal fluid perfusion cause an inc
