AIMS: Although desmoplastic fibroblastoma (DFB) and fibroma of tendon sheath (FTS) are well-established entities, they may show overlapping clinicopathological features. In addition, cytogenetic data showing a shared 11q12 rearrangement in a small number of cases suggest a close link between these entities. A recent microarray study revealed up-regulation of FOSL1 mRNA in DFBs with 11q12 rearrangement. The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between DFB and FTS.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We tested 42 cases diagnosed originally as either DFBs or FTSs for interobserver concordance base

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare, benign, yet locally aggressive bone tumor, typically affecting long bones in young individuals. Its occurrence in the ulna is extremely rare. This case report highlights the diagnostic challenges of a 16-year-old female presenting with DF of the ulna. The report emphasizes individualized treatment and long-term follow-up and raises awareness of DF in atypical locations. This patient presented with a two-month history of mild, activity-related pain in the distal forearm. Imaging revealed an expansile lytic lesion in the distal ulna, characterized by cortical

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign, rare fibroblastic intraosseous neoplasm histologically resembling a desmoid soft tissue tumor. Although classified as benign, DF frequently exhibits an aggressive behavior, has a moderate-to-high recurrence rate, and often causes pathological fractures and extensive bone destruction. This case report presents an incidentally detected DF of the tibia, which was diagnosed using a minimally invasive approach. A 36-year-old African female patient was referred to the Department of Diagnostic Imaging of Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova-IRCCS (Reggio Emilia, Italy)

Desmoplastic fibroma of the bone is an extremely rare primary benign tumor. The present study reports a case of desmoplastic fibroma of the bone with the longest published follow-up. A 21-year-old female presented to The First Hospital of Jilin University (Changchun, Jilin, China) with thigh pain. Radiography demonstrated a lytic expansile lesion in the proximal femur. Curettage was performed, followed by use of an allogeneic graft. One month later, the patient suffered a pathological fracture and was treated with an open reduction and internal fixation. There was no recurrence of the tumor ov

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is an extremely rare benign intraosseous tumor of mesenchymal origin that exhibits locally aggressive behavior with a high recurrence rate. Although mainly affecting patients between the second and third decades of life, it rarely involves the jaw bones, with the mandible being the most affected. Complete surgical removal of DF may require curettage or resection of the surrounding bone to prevent recurrence. This article reports the case of a 10-year-old girl who was referred to our department by a dentist for the evaluation of a painless swelling at the left angle of

Background: Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare, benign, but locally aggressive intraosseous tumor with a predilection for the mandible in pediatric patients. Owing to its low incidence, evidence guiding management remains limited. Objective: To provide a comprehensive review of the clinical presentation, radiographic features, treatment strategies, and outcomes of pediatric DF of the jaws. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, and IEEE Xplore to identify relevant studies published between 2000 and 2026. Given the rarity of thi

BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic fibroma is a rare, benign bone tumor that exhibits locally aggressive behavior and typically occurs in the mandible and long bones. Its presence in small bones, particularly in the hallux, is exceedingly rare. Desmoplastic fibroma's unusual presentation in this region often mimics other lesions, such as glomus tumors, and poses significant diagnostic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 38-year-old female with a history of trauma to the affected toe and thyroid cancer, who experienced persistent subungual pain, localized tenderness, and cold hyperse

PURPOSE: Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is an uncommon intermediate bone tumor rarely involving the skull with unidentified pathogenesis. We report the first case of pediatric temporoparietal cranial desmoplastic fibroma (DF) with a CTNNB1 gene mutation and review the previous literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 3-year-old boy had a firm, painless mass on the right temporoparietal region for 22 months. The cranial CT scan showed isolated osteolytic destruction in the outer plate and diploe of the right temporoparietal bone. Gross total resection of the lesion and cranioplasty were performed. CASE: We present the case of a 14-year-old male who presented with a pathologic elbow fracture. Imaging demonstrated a lytic distal humerus metaphyseal lesion with a soap bubble appearance. After fracture healing, frozen sections obtained at open biopsy suggested fibrous tissue; thus, curettage and bone grafting was performed. Pathology confirmed desmoplastic fibroma. The patient experienced a recurrence 18 months later and had repeat curettage and allograft strutting. He had no evidence of re-recurrence 2 years after the second surgery.
CONCLUSIONS: Desmoplastic fibroma may mimic the present

CASE: Desmoplastic fibromas are tumors of fibrous tissue that rarely are diagnosed. We present the case of a 27-year-old man who presented with pain of the forearm that was initially diagnosed as a muscle strain. A computed tomography-guided core biopsy revealed a desmoplastic fibroma. Consequently, the patient was treated with a resection of the proximal aspect of the radius followed by reconstruction with use of a vascularized fibular autograft.
CONCLUSION: At the 2-year follow-up, radiographs showed integration of the autograft; additionally, good results were noted with the Patient-Report

RATIONALE: Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare, locally invasive but benign bone tumor. It represents one of the rarest bone diseases, with an incidence of only 0.11% of all primary bone tumors.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, a case of massive and unusual DF, with simultaneous involvement of ilium and ischium, is described. A 29-year-old man suffered minor pain in his right hip for 2 years. It worsened after sudden movements, which prevented him from walking normally. Physical examination showed a limitation when the right hip was flexed and a percussion pain on the hip region. BACKGROUND: Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is an extremely rare bone tumor. The recommendations for therapy are often based on limited personal experience, and the rate of local recurrence in the published cases is very high. Therefore, an analysis of treatment results of published cases was performed. Furthermore, DNA analysis of the tumors from two patients was also performed.
METHODS: The clinical, radiologic, and histologic data of two patients with DF of the long bones are presented. DNA flow cytometry was performed on both DFs, three cases of abdominal fibromatosis, and three cases of extraa

UNLABELLED: Desmoplastic fibroma of the calcaneum is a rare, locally aggressive tumour. A 24-year-old female presented with long-standing heel pain, with the collapse of the calcaneum (hindfoot) that was untreated for 7 years. Eradication of this locally aggressive lesion by adjuvant therapy and restoration of calcaneal bony morphology by allograft was an arduous and challenging task. At the final follow-up, the heel was painless, and the patient could walk normally without support.
CONCLUSION: Restoration of calcaneal height is challenging in young patients, and using structural allograft re

The purpose of this study is to delineate differences between mandibular and maxillary desmoplastic fibroma (DF) via analysis of published cases. Details of cases were analyzed for distribution, demographics, presentation, treatment, and follow-up. Between 1961 and 2022, 195 cases were reported, averaged 2.7 annually. There were 159 (81.5%) mandibular and 36 (18.5%) maxillary cases. The posterior mandible was most commonly affected (91.2%; p < 0.05). Maxillary DF mostly involved the anterior region (53.1%; p < 0.05). The female:male ratio was 1:1.3 (1:2 mandibular and 1:4 maxillary), and the a

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a rare bone tumor that accounts for about 0.1%-0.3% of all bone tumors. It is typically characterized as slow growing, but in rare cases it can proliferate extensively and exhibit locally aggressive characteristics. It is found most commonly in the appendicular skeleton and rarely in the axial skeleton. The authors present the cases of 2 women in their 20s with DF originating from the cervicothoracic spine. Both tumors intimately involved the brachial plexus and caused significant impingement of the mediastinum resulting in cardiopulmonary compromise. Both patients

Fibrous dysplasia may show locally aggressive behaviour reflecting secondary intralesional changes, extension to soft tissue, or malignant transformation. We report the case of a patient with polyostotic fibrous dysplasia who had a giant mandibular lesion consisting of histologically typical, genotypically-confirmed, fibrous dysplasia merged with a fibrotic and hypocellular desmoplastic fibroma-like tissue in which the same Gsα-R201H mutation was detected. The occurrence of the same mutation in both the fibrous dysplasia and areas of desmoplastic fibroma suggests that the fibroma-like tissue r

Most cases of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) are sporadic and are caused by parathyroid adenomas. Hereditary forms may occur in up to 10% of PHPT patients and are more frequent in younger patients. The hyperparathyroidism-jaw tumor (HPT-JT) syndrome is characterized by PHPT in up to 95% of patients and ossifying fibromas in the jaw in 25%-50%. We describe the case of a 35-year-old male from Bangladesh referred to our hospital due to a voluminous right mandibular swelling: a rare nonossifying fibroma of the mandible was diagnosed. Due to functional impotence, a left shoulder magnetic resona
