Orbital ossifying fibroma: A case report.

CLINICAL CASE: The case concerns a 34 year-old man, who presented with pain in the medial canthus in his left eye, with proptosis and diplopia. The examination showed exophthalmus and a palpable mass at the inner canthus. The computed tomography revealed a lesion, which was confirmed by biopsy to be a ossifying fibroma. DISCUSSION: Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous lesion that mostly affects the jaw. Clinical presentation and complications vary according to its location. Clinical examination, imaging, and histopathology are essential for definitive diagnosis. Surgical treatment is m

Peripheral ossifying fibroma, some rare findings.

The peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a benign reactive gingival overgrowth; it occurs mainly in the anterior portion of maxilla in young adults, predominantly among females. The present report describes a case of POF in a male patient, which relapsed ten years later and of the lesion showed superficial bone erosion on surgical excision.

Ossifying fibroma in Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome.

Buschke-Ollendorff syndrome represents an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by connective tissue nevi and osteopoikilosis. Cutaneous lesions may contain either predominantly elastic fibers or predominantly collagen fibers or may show both connective tissue components. The disease results from mutations in LEMD3 (MAN1), which lead to enhanced transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) signaling and resultant changes in fibroblast function. TGF-β alterations have been implicated in a number of fibrotic disorders, and it is therefore not surprising that a range of cutaneous and skeletal abnorma

Peripheral ossifying fibroma: A case report.

Localized gingival growths are one of the most frequently encountered lesions in the oral cavity, which are considered to be reactive rather than neoplastic. Different lesions with similar clinical presentation make it difficult to arrive at a correct diagnosis. These lesions include pyogenic granuloma, irritation fibroma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF). Among these lesions, an infrequently occurring gingival lesion is the POF. Considerable confusion has prevailed in the nomenclature of POF due to its variable histopathologic features. This is a case presen

Peripheral Ossifying fibroma: a clinical report.

Most localized growths on the gingiva are considered to be reactive rather than neoplastic in nature. The authors describe a 20-year-old male patient with a peripheral ossifying fibroma in the maxilla exhibiting significant size with the disease duration of one year. The signs of recurrence in spite of thorough excision a debridement exposed the need for further study of the causes of recurrence. Clinical, radiographical, and histological characteristics are discussed.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma: a clincal report.

Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a common solitary gingival overgrowth thought to arise from the gingival corium, periosteum, and periodontal ligament. Commonly used synonyms for POF include calcifying fibroblastic granuloma, peripheral fibroma with calcification, peripheral cementifying fibroma, and calcifying or ossifying fibrous epulis. Because it is possible to misdiagnose POF as pyogenic granuloma, peripheral giant cell granuloma, or odontogenic tumors, histopathological examination is, therefore, essential for accurate diagnosis, and differential diagnosis is important because of PO

[Multiple Non-ossifying Fibroma (Case-report).].

The authors present the case-history of a patient with multiple non-ossifying fibroma causing pathological fractures in the long bones of the lower extremities, the vertebral bodies, ribs and bones of the brachial plexus. Since 1988 when the first pathological fracture occurred up to the present time when the tumour was found at other sites five biopsies of foci were made, all with the same histological finding. The pathological fracture in the distal portion of the right femur and the proximal portion of the left femur were treated by osteosynthesis and filled with bone cement. Subsequently i

Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma of the paranasal sinuses. An extragnathic variant of cemento-ossifying fibroma. Report of three cases.

Psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (POF) is a diagnostic designation for a sinonasal or orbital fibroosseous lesion characterized by numerous small round mineralized spherules lying in a fibroblastic stroma. We report 3 cases. One occurred in the frontal sinus of an 18-years-old male; 1 in the frontal sinus of a 20-year-old male and 1 in the maxillary sinus of a 36-year-old male. Rather limited excision resulted in a disease-free follow-up time from 2 to 6 years. The histomorphology of POF was compared with other fibro-osseous lesions of the craniofacial skeleton including the jaws. It appeared th

Ossifying fibroma and juvenile ossifying fibroma: A systematic review on clinical and radiological parameters, treatment modalities and recurrence.

Ossifying fibroma (OF) is a rare benign fibro-osseous neoplasm developing mostly in maxillo-facial bones. OF is divided in cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF), juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma (JTOF) and psammomatoid ossifying fibroma (PSOF). The aim of this systematic review was to synthetize the existing literature on OF, investigating the clinical and radiological parameters related to the different forms of the disease, and to compare the treatment modalities according to their associated recurrence rate. Three databases were searched in March 2024, with an update in September 2024. Eligi

Juvenile Trabecular Ossifying Fibroma of the Orbit.

An 11-year-old male presented to the hospital with severe headache, nausea, and proptosis of the OD. Imaging revealed a 4 × 3 × 1 cm mass originating in the right orbital roof with adjacent bony remodeling, a calcific rim along the inferior extent of the lesion, and a heterogenous central component with hyper- and hypo-dense components. An orbitotomy with biopsy with near-total resection was performed, which yielded a diagnosis of juvenile trabecular ossifying fibroma, a tumor rarely found in the orbit. Two months later, given the concern for residual/recurrent disease based on increased signa

[Peripheral ossifying fibroma. A series of cases].

OBJECTIVE: To report a series of three cases diagnosed with peripheral ossifying fibroma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three clinical cases are presented of patients with exophytic lesions who underwent excisional biopsy with bone debridement and, in specific cases, extraction of associated teeth. RESULTS: the three cases were diagnosed as peripheral ossifying fibromas, subsequent to the determination of histopathological findings consistent with the diagnosis, such as the presence of fibrous tissue, bone deposits and calcified material. After 1 year of follow-up, no recurrence was observed in any

Comprehensive Genomic Analysis of Cemento-Ossifying Fibroma.

Cemento-ossifying fibroma (COF) of the jaws is currently classified as a benign mesenchymal odontogenic tumor, and only targeted approaches have been used to assess its genetic alterations. A minimal proportion of COFs harbor CDC73 somatic mutations, and copy number alterations (CNAs) involving chromosomes 7 and 12 have recently been reported in a small proportion of cases. However, the genetic background of COFs remains obscure. We used a combination of whole-exome sequencing and RNA sequencing to assess somatic mutations, fusion transcripts, and CNAs in a cohort of 12 freshly collected COFs.

Odontogenic fibroma, including amyloid and ossifying variants.

Sixty-five cases of odontogenic fibroma (OdonF) are herein presented having been segregated into peripheral, extra bony tumors (n = 40) and tumors arising in bone or centrally (n = 25). All cases were characterized microscopically by a fibrous proliferation that varied within and between cases in cellularity and collagen fibril diameter, with intermixed odontogenic epithelial islands and cords. All central lesions presented as well demarcated radiolucencies and resorption of contiguous tooth roots was a common finding. These intraosseous lesions were of the WHO type; the so-called nonWHO type

Ossifying fibroma misdiagnosed as chronic apical periodontitis.

INTRODUCTION: Ossifying fibroma mimicking chronic apical periodontitis is extremely rare. This report describes a case of ossifying fibroma located in the periapical region of the mandibular right canine that was misdiagnosed as chronic apical periodontitis. METHODS: A 40-year-old woman complained of slight pain in the right anterior mandibular region without mucosal abnormalities or swelling. Radiographically, a well-circumscribed, unilocular, radiolucent lesion was observed that was located in the periapical region of the mandibular right canine, which presented an endodontically treated ro

Review of lateral orbital wall ossifying fibroma.

Significant histological overlap exists between fibro-osseous lesions and diagnosis is made on a clinicopathological basis. Ossifying fibroma is a benign fibro-osseous neoplasm of the jaw and craniofacial complex that has generated a degree of controversy regarding diagnosis and classification, especially with respect to the psammomatoid variant. Orbital lesions mainly arise from the paranasal sinuses affecting the medial or inferior orbital wall. Lateral orbital wall ossifying fibroma is, therefore, a rare condition with only a single previous case report. We present a second case of lateral

A case of ossifying fibroma of the frontal sinus.

Ossifying fibroma is a rare benign tumor of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinus, and is easily misdiagnosed. In the present study, we report the clinical data in the case of a 46-year-old female patient, treated due to 5-day forehead swelling accompanied by dizziness. CT examination revealed dilation of the right frontal sinus, bone wall integration, dense masses in the cavity, multiple punctate calcification foci internally and no nasal obstruction, nasal mucus or epistaxis. After hospitalization, a right frontal sinus fenestration and tumor resection plus nasofrontal duct reconstruction
