The effect of intruded events on peak time: the role of reinforcement history during the intruded event.

Pigeons were studied in an extension of a study by Aum et al. [Aum, S., Brown, B.L., Hemmes, N.S. 2004. The effects of concurrent task and gap events on peak time in the peak procedure. Behav. Process. 65, 43-56] on timing behavior under a discrete-trial fixed-interval (FI) procedure during which 6-s intruded events were superimposed on peak-interval (PI) test trials. In Aum et al., one event consisted in termination of the timing cue (gap trial); the other was a stimulus in the presence of which subjects had been trained to respond under an independent random-interval (RI) schedule of reinfor

The influence of distracters, stimulus duration and hemianopia on first saccade in patients with unilateral neglect.

The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of visual distracters, stimulus duration and the presence of contralesional hemianopia on direction of the first saccade in right brain damaged (RBD) patients affected by left unilateral neglect (UN). During a visual search task we recorded eye movements in five RBD patients with UN and hemianopia (N+H+), nine RBD patients with UN but no hemianopia (N+H-), four RBD patients with neither neglect nor hemianopia and four normal controls. Two task variables were orthogonally manipulated: (a) presence or absence of distracters and (b) short o

[Comparative study of the relationship between alexithymia and affective dependence on 60 alcoholics and 57 control subjects].

UNLABELLED: Several authors have shown that alexithymia characterizes patients suffering from substance abuses. Moreover emotional and perceptual dependencies have also been described in these disorders. The aim of this study is to test two hypotheses: First that the emotional components of alexithymia and dependency were linked in alcoholics and secondly that the cognitive components of these two dimensions were also linked in these subjects. Two groups were recruited: 60 inpatients filled out the DSM IV criteria for alcohol dependence and 57 healthy subjects were the controls. All the subjec

The relationship of A-B, field dependency, and emotional openness in paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenics.

The relationship between A-B score, Field dependency (EFT), and paranoid-nonparanoid status in 24 male acute psychiatric inpatients was explored. It was hypothesized that paranoids would score as Bs and extreme field independents (conceptual orientation), while nonparanoids would score as As and field dependents (perceptual orientation). As predicted, nonparanoids were significantly more field dependent than paranoids and controls, but no difference was found between paranoids and controls. Contrary to our hypotheses, nonparanoids were significantly more B than paranoids and controls. The only

The effect of recognizability on figure-ground processing: does it affect parsing or only figure selection?

Though figure-ground assignment has been shown to be probably affected by recognizability, it appears sensible that object recognition must follow at least the earlier process of figure-ground segregation. To examine whether or not rudimentary object recognition could, counterintuitively, start even before the completion of the stage of parsing in which figure-ground segregation is done, participants were asked to respond, in a go/no-go fashion, whenever any out of 16 alternative connected patterns (that constituted familiar stimuli in the upright orientation) appeared. The white figure of the

Flexible real-time skin dosimeter based on a thin-film copper indium gallium selenide solar cell for electron radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: Various dosimeters have been proposed for skin dosimetry in electron radiotherapy. However, one main drawback of these skin dosimeters is their lack of flexibility, which could make accurate dose measurements challenging due to air gaps between a curved patient surface and dosimeter. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to suggest a novel flexible skin dosimeter based on a thin-film copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cell, and to evaluate its dosimetric characteristics. METHODS: The CIGS solar cell dosimeter consisted of (a) a customized thin-film CIGS solar cell and (b)

Sleep and time course of consolidation of visual discrimination skills in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy.

The level of procedural skills improves in normal individuals when the acquisition is followed by a period of sleep rather than wake. If sleep plays an important role in the consolidation process the advantage it provides should be reduced or delayed when its organization is altered, as in patients with chronic sleep disorders. To test this prediction in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy (NC), who usually have a more fragmented organization of sleep than normals, we compared the initial, intermediate and delayed level of consolidation of visual skills. Twenty-two drug-naive NC patients and 22

Attentional tracking and inhibition of return in dynamic displays.

Seven experiments were conducted to replicate, and extend, a finding by Tipper, Driver, and Weaver (1991). They reported evidence for dynamic, object-centered inhibition of return (IOR)--that is, coding of inhibition following a peripheral cue in coordinates that move with the previously cued object, providing a dynamic bias against reattending to that object. The present experiments used a variation of Posner and Cohen's (1984) spatial cuing paradigm. Subjects responded manually (simple reaction time) to a luminance increment in one of two peripheral boxes, one of which had previously been cu

Recognition potential latency and word image degradation.

Ten subjects viewed a stream of meaningless background images in which English words occasionally appeared. A subject indicated detection of a word by lifting the index finger of the preferred hand. He received payment based on his performance. A computer program degraded half of the word images, removing a fraction of the lit pixels and replacing them with others that resembled the background images. The recognition potential (RP) was recorded from occipital electrodes. Degrading the word images increased the peak latency of the RP from 231 to 266 msec. The 35 msec difference was comparable t

[Rehabilitation of paraplegic patients].

Comprehensive management and care of spinal-cord-lesioned patients start at the site of injury or at the moment of the onset of paralysis, depend with its consequences on the treatment in the acute phase, pass to the reactivation and rehabilitation phase and continue throughout all life of such patients. Considering that even a complete transverse lesion is only an instable, temporarily balanced situation, every small complication can destroy this balance and may lead from total independence to total dependence. Feature- and object-based attentional modulation in the human auditory "where" pathway.

Attending to a visual stimulus feature, such as color or motion, enhances the processing of that feature in the visual cortex. Moreover, the processing of the attended object's other, unattended, features is also enhanced. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to show that attentional modulation in the auditory system may also exhibit such feature- and object-specific effects. Specifically, we found that attending to auditory motion increases activity in nonprimary motion-sensitive areas of the auditory cortical "where" pathway. Moreover, activity in these motion-sensitive areas

The relationship between executive functioning, central coherence, and repetitive behaviors in the high-functioning autism spectrum.

This study examined the relationship between everyday repetitive behavior (primary symptoms of autism) and performance on neuropsychological tests of executive function and central coherence (secondary symptoms). It was hypothesized that the frequency and intensity of repetitive behavior would be positively correlated with laboratory measures of cognitive rigidity and weak central coherence. Participants included 19 individuals (ages 10-19) with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders (ASD group) and 18 age- and IQ-matched typically developing controls (TD group). There was partial support

Age-related benefits of digital noise reduction for short-term word learning in children with hearing loss.

PURPOSE: To determine the rate of word learning for children with hearing loss (HL) in quiet and in noise compared to normal-hearing (NH) peers. The effects of digital noise reduction (DNR) were examined for children with HL. METHOD: Forty-one children with NH and 26 children with HL were grouped by age (8-9 years and 11-12 years). The children learned novel words associated with novel objects through a process of trial and error. Functions relating performance across trials were calculated for each child in each listening condition and were compared. RESULTS: Significant effects were observ

Can language restructure cognition? The case for space.

Frames of reference are coordinate systems used to compute and specify the location of objects with respect to other objects. These have long been thought of as innate concepts, built into our neurocognition. However, recent work shows that the use of such frames in language, cognition and gesture varies cross-culturally, and that children can acquire different systems with comparable ease. We argue that language can play a significant role in structuring, or restructuring, a domain as fundamental as spatial cognition. This suggests we need to rethink the relation between the neurocognitive un

A deficit in shifting attention present in high-functioning autism but not Asperger's disorder.

The aim of this study was to examine executive functioning, in particular, attentional set-shifting deficits in high-functioning autism (n = 12) and Asperger's disorder (n = 12). A large or global digit composed of smaller or local digits was presented during each trial. The participants indicated the presence of 1s or 2s by pressing the appropriate button. These targets could appear globally or locally Relative to IQ, sex and age matched controls, reaction time to global targets in individuals with autism was retarded when the previous target appeared locally. This deficiency in shifting from

Menière's disease. II. A neuropsychological study.

23 Menière patients were examined with a extensive battery of neuro-psychological tests. In a previous investigation, the authors had demonstrated that patients with long-duration Menière's disease had psychological disturbances, presumably localized in the nondominant hemisphere. In the present investigation, the patients had short-duration Menière's disease, and we were unable to replicate the results of the former investigation. It is concluded that the central changes in nondominant hemisphere function develop over a long period of time. It is hoped for that further neuropsychological inve

Vaccination against Listeria infection in mice with a mutant strain of reduced virulence.

Killed Listeria monocytogenes (L.m.) or living Listeria innocua, being unable to afford noticeable immunity against L.m. challenge in mice, the efficacy of a living strain of L.m. of reduced virulence was studied. This strain was obtained from a field strain of low virulence by successive mutations for streptomycin dependence, reversion to independence and resistance to erythromycin. Its protective immunity was checked in mice against IV, SC and intra-gastric challenges. Vaccinated mice were protected against a IV challenge, lethal for controls, and they were rid of infection in a much shorter

The effect of acute sleep deprivation on visual evoked potentials in professional drivers.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have demonstrated that as little as 18 hours of sleep deprivation can cause deleterious effects on performance. It has also been suggested that sleep deprivation can cause a "tunnel-vision" effect, in which attention is restricted to the center of the visual field. The current study aimed to replicate these behavioral effects and to examine the electrophysiological underpinnings of these changes. DESIGN: Repeated-measures experimental study. SETTING: University laboratory. PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS: Nineteen professional drivers (1 woman; mean age = 45.3 +/

A physiological correlate of the 'spotlight' of visual attention.

Here we identify a neural correlate of the ability to precisely direct visual attention to locations other than the center of gaze. Human subjects performed a task requiring shifts of visual attention (but not of gaze) from one location to the next within a dense array of targets and distracters while functional MRI was used to map corresponding displacements of neural activation within visual cortex. The cortical topography of the purely attention-driven activity precisely matched the topography of activity evoked by the cued targets when presented in isolation. Such retinotopic mapping of at
