Motion adaptation shifts apparent position without the motion aftereffect.

Adaptation to motion can produce effects on both the perceived motion (the motion aftereffect) and the position (McGraw, Whitaker, Skillen, & Chung, 2002; Nishida & Johnston, 1999; Snowden, 1998; Whitaker, McGraw, & Pearson, 1999) of a subsequently viewed test stimulus. The position shift can be interpreted as a consequence of the motion aftereffect. For example, as the motion within a stationary aperture creates the impression that the aperture is shifted in position (De Valois & De Valois, 1991; Hayes, 2000; Ramachandran & Anstis, 1990), the motion aftereffect may generate a shift in perceiv

Neural correlates of after-effects caused by adaptation to multiple face displays.

Adaptation to a given face leads to face-related, specific after-effects. Recently, this topic has attracted a lot of attention because it clearly shows that adaptation occurs even at the higher stages of visual cortical processing. However, during our every-day life, faces do not appear in isolation, rather they are usually surrounded by other stimuli. Here, we used psychophysical and fMRI adaptation methods to test whether humans adapt to the gender properties of a composite multiple face stimulus as well. As adaptors we used stimuli composed of eight different individual faces, positioned p

Gamma oscillations underlying the visual motion aftereffect.

After having been exposed to strong visual motion in one direction, a subsequently presented stationary visual scene seems to move in the opposite direction. This motion aftereffect (MAE) is usually ascribed to short-term functional changes in cortical areas involved in visual motion analysis akin to adaptation. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG), we show increased global field activity due to the MAE which could mostly be explained by a dipole located near the putative location of human area MT+. We further demonstrate that the induced MAE is accompanied by a significant increase in gamma-ban

Visible persistence decay rates for schizophrenics and substance abusers.

Information-processing deficits are consistently reported for schizophrenics. The findings from the majority of psychophysical tasks indicate that the deficit is specific to schizophrenics and thus may represent a marker for schizophrenia. The present study evaluated for specificity of impairment by including controls using methadone. A two-pulsed forced choice information-processing task that required the detection of a line or a blank-field during an interstimulus interval (ISI) indexed efficiency of processing (i.e., visible persistence). There were 19 schizophrenic, 9 schizoaffective, 8 de

Amnesia for the McCollough effect following unilateral electroconvulsive therapy: implications for laterality.

The hemispheric lateralization of retrograde amnesia following unilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was measured by a novel nonverbal probe, the McCollough effect, which allowed equal and exclusive access to each hemisphere. Alternating exposure to perpendicular gratings of complementary colors (e.g., red vertical stripes alternated with green horizontal stripes) will cause subsequently presented black and white gratings to appear colored hours or even days later (the McCollough effect). Three of the patients examined (3 of 10) lost the effect in just the half visual field contralateral

Residual effects of ecstasy (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) on low level visual processes.

'Ecstasy' (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) induces impaired functioning in the serotonergic system, including the occipital lobe. This study employed the 'tilt aftereffect' paradigm to operationalise the function of orientation-selective neurons among ecstasy consumers and controls as a means of investigating the role of reduced serotonin on visual orientation processing. The magnitude of the tilt aftereffect reflects the extent of lateral inhibition between orientation-selective neurons and is elicited to both 'real' contours, processed in visual cortex area V1, and illusory contours, proc

Psychogenic vertigo within an anxiety frame of reference: an experimental study.

The theoretical point of departure here was the assumption that a psychogenic vertigo patient displaces affect, or experience of anxiety to one of dizziness, the dizziness serving as an anxiety equivalent. This is seen to imply a change in the locus of experience from the me to the not-me sphere. "Percept-genetic" techniques and a spiral after-effect measurement were used to compare 23 patients with presumed psychogenic vertigo with a control group matched in sex, age, education and occupation. Results of the percept-genetic techniques showed the patients to display stronger signs of affect an

Cross-orientation transfer of adaptation for facial identity is asymmetric: a study using contrast-based recognition thresholds.

Recent studies suggest that adaptation effects for face shape and gender transfer from upright to inverted faces more than the reverse. We investigated whether a similar asymmetry occurred for face identity, using a recently developed adaptation method based on contrast-recognition thresholds. When adapting and test stimuli shared the same orientation, aftereffects were similar for upright and inverted faces. When orientation differed, there was significant transfer of aftereffects from upright adapting to inverted test faces, but none from inverted to upright faces. We show that asymmetric cr

Neural correlates of high-level adaptation-related aftereffects.

Prolonged exposure to complex stimuli, such as faces, biases perceptual decisions toward nonadapted, dissimilar stimuli, leading to contrastive aftereffects. Here we tested the neural correlates of this perceptual bias using a functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation (fMRIa) paradigm. Adaptation to a face or hand stimulus led to aftereffects by biasing the categorization of subsequent ambiguous face/hand composite stimuli away from the adaptor category. The simultaneously observed fMRIa in the face-sensitive fusiform face area (FFA) and in the body-part-sensitive extrastriate body area

The role of posterior parietal cortices on prismatic adaptation effects on the representation of time intervals.

Previous studies provided evidence of an ascending left-to-right spatial representation of time durations by using a technique affecting high levels of spatial cognition, i.e. prismatic adaptation (PA). Indeed, PA that induced a leftward aftereffect distorted time representation toward an underestimation, while PA that induced a rightward aftereffect distorted time representation toward an overestimation. The present study advances previous findings on the effects of PA on time by investigating the neural basis subtending these effects. We focused on the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) since i

Average evoked responses and psychophysical performance in patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism.

Perceptual function in eight patients with pseudohypoparathyroidism (PHP) was studied with two neurophysiological measures, the average evoked response (AER) and nerve conduction velocity. A battery of psychophysical tasks including reaction time, size estimation, `hidden pictures,' and the rod and frame procedure was also used. Patients with PHP had significantly longer latency visual AER and slower reaction time than a group of normal volunteers, and they performed erratically and poorly on the other psychophysical tasks. Differentiating these patients with diffuse mental deficiency were two

J.E. Purkynĕ's contributions to the physiology of the visual, the vestibular and the oculomotor systems.

J.E. Purkynĕ (1787-1869) was one of the leading physiologists in the first half of the 19th century, became the founder of the "exact subjectivism", and remained during his entire life a very careful observer in psychophysical experiments. He made moreover many important discoveries in anatomy, neuroanatomy, embryology and pharmacology. Despite his outstanding contributions to science, he remained in his general philosophy and feelings deeply attached to the Romantic spirit of the age. After Purkynĕ returned to Prague in 1849 he played an important role in his nation's search for a national id

Explanation of near-death experiences: a systematic analysis of case reports and qualitative research.

Background and objectiveSome individuals report a near-death experience (NDE) after a life-threatening crisis, which refers to a range of subjective experiences related to impending death. This experience is a phenomenon with transcendental elements, which leads to deep permanent changes in both the individual and the social lives of the NDEr's. Therefore, this study aims to review the near-death experiences of individuals with different religious and cultural views.MethodologyThis is a systematic analysis study. All the case report, case series and qualitative research studies which presented

Mechanisms to medicines: navigating drug repurposing strategies in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a continuously advancing neurodegenerative condition distinguished by the unremitting deterioration of cognitive abilities and memory impairment, which significantly hampers daily functioning of life. In the absence of disease modifying treatments, it continues to pose a significant global challenge. Though symptomatic treatment exists, the inherent complexity involved with AD pathogenesis related to Aβ plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, etc. poses a tremendous challenge to developing drugs. With the incidence of AD increa
