Diversification of Cercopithifilaria species (Nematoda: Filarioidea) in Japanese wild ruminants with description of two new species.

Twelve of the 17 Cervus nippon nippon deer from Kyushu Island, Japan, that we examined were infected with one or two Cercopithifilaria species. C. longa n. sp. adults were in the subcutaneous tissues of limbs and the abdomen, and C. crassa n. sp. adults were in the skin, mainly in the anterior part of the back; the distribution of the dermal microfilariae generally matched that of the adult worms. The two new species were assigned to the group of primitive Cercopithifilaria species that parasitize ruminants (bavids and cervids), but the new species could readily be distinguished from others mo

Ultrastructure of infective larvae (L3) of Onchocerca volvulus (Nematoda: Filarioidea) developed in Simulium yahense in Liberia.

Third-stage infective larvae of Onchocerca volvulus were examined to elucidate the ultrastructure and the interrelations of the stoma, esophagus, intestine, and nervous system. The alimentary canal involves a cuticularized stoma with a triradiate lumen that is continuous with a similar triradiate lumen in the muscular region of the esophagus. The lumen wall may be laterally appressed or opened into a stellate form in the glandular region. Posteriad from the esophagointestinal valve, the cylindroid lumen becomes partially occluded with microvilli formed by the evaginations of the apical membran

Eulimdana clava (Nematoda: Filarioidea) infection in domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica): Molecular characterization and pathological changes.

Filarial nematodes of the Eulimdana genus inhabit subcutaneous tissue of various avian species, mostly Charadriiforme birds. In domestic pigeons, E. clava is the only species recorded in the subcutaneous tissue in a number of isolated cases. In the present study, we discuss the morphology and histopathology of filarial nematodes recovered from subcutaneous tissue of domestic pigeons in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In total 110 pigeons were submitted to necropsy at the Department of Pathology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Sarajevo. At necropsy, in four pigeons (3.6%) numerous thread-like

Efficacy of different treatment regimes against setariosis (Setaria tundra, Nematoda: Filarioidea) and associated peritonitis in reindeer.

BACKGROUND: When a severe peritonitis outbreak in semi-domesticated reindeer was noticed in 2003 in Finland, the concerned industry urged immediate preventive actions in order to avoid detrimental effects of S. tundra and further economical losses. A research programme was swiftly initiated to study S. tundra and its impact on the health and wellbeing of reindeer. METHODS: The ultimate aim of this study was to test the efficacy of different treatment regimes against S. tundra and associated peritonitis in reindeer. The timing of the trials was planned to be compatible with the annual rhythm o

Natural infection of Culex theileri (Diptera: Culicidae) with Dirofilaria immitis (Nematoda: Filarioidea) on Madeira Island, Portugal.

Field and laboratory studies were performed to verify whether Culex theileri Theobald functions as a natural vector of Dirofilaria immitis (Leidy) on Madeira Island, Portugal. CO2-baited light traps (EVS traps) were use to sample mosquitoes monthly basis between February 2002 and February 2003 in the area of Quebradas (Funchal). Three mosquito species were captured, including 58 Culex pipiens L., 790 Cx. theileri, and three Culiseta longiareolata (Macquart). Only C. theileri tested positive for D. immitis. The presence of this filarial worm was detected by direct observation, infectivity assay

Examination of type material of two species of Litomosoides (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae), parasites from bats; taxonomic consequences.

Type material of Litomosoides hamletti Sandground, 1934 from Glossophaga soricina soricina in Brazil and L. penai Jiménez-Quirós & Arroyo, 1960 from Carollia perspicillata azteca in Costa Rica, was examined. The morphology of the spicules shows that these species belong to the carinii group. Their synonymy with L. guiterasi Pérez Vigueras, 1934, from Artibeus jamaicensis yucatanicus in Cuba, does not appear justified because they are distinct in several characters (body length, width of female, size and shape of buccal cavity and capsule, shape of right spicule). L. hamletti is a valid species

Onchocercidae (Nematoda: Filarioidea) Infecting Colombian Avian Hosts: Insight From Morphotypes of Microfilariae and Molecular Lineages.

Members of the Onchocercidae family are parasites that infect a wide range of tetrapods, including wild birds and other animals. In Colombia, studies on avian blood parasites have diagnosed infections with microfilariae in several species using light microscopy. However, no morphological or molecular analyses of these nematodes have been conducted to date. The present study examined samples from 3820 wild birds with material deposited in the biological collection of the Host-Parasite Relationship Study Group since 1999. Of these individuals, 142 (3.7%) were infected with microfilaria and were

Prevalence of two species of Litomosoides (Nematoda: Filarioidea) parasites of Akodon cursor (Rodentia: Muridae) from southeastern Brazil.

Two species of filariids, Litomosoides silvai and Litomosoides chagasfilhoi, were collected from the thoracic and abdominal cavities, respectively, of Akodon cursor, from Catimbau Grande, Rio Bonito, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fifty-eight rodents were necropsied and 15 (25.9%) were parasitized. Four of the 15 infected rodents (26.7%) presented concurrent infections, but each species had separate and specific sites of infection. This is the first report of a rodent species parasitized with naturally occurring, concurrent infections with two species of filarial worms.

Ultrastructural observations on the nervous system and the sensory organs of the infective stage (L3) of Onchocerca volvulus (Nematoda: Filarioidea).

A detailed morphological investigation of the sensory organs and the nervous system of the third juvenile stage of Onchocerca volvulus was performed at the ultrastructural level. A complex system of different receptor cells is found at the anterior and posterior end of this developmental stage. The eight papillae are arranged in two concentric circles consisting of two types of morphologically different receptors. Accessory nerve processes end free in the tip of the head. The paired amphids contain nine dendritic processes and accessory axons are seen in the surrounding cells. The basic struct

The louse Trinoton anserinum (Amblycera: Phthiraptera), an intermediate host of Sarconema eurycerca (Filarioidea: Nematoda), a heartworm of swans.

The role of the louse Trinoton anserinum (F) as an intermediate host of Sarconema eurycerca (Wehr) was investigated in swans. 8.3% of healthy swans carried one to twelve lice per bird, dispersed contagiously. Injured and lead-poisoned swans were more heavily infected. The mouthparts appear designed to penetrate the hosts' skin; the mandibles are robust and asymmetric, and the maxillae have a serrated intercutting surface. 22% fed exclusively on blood and 33% on both blood and feather. All life-cycle stages fed upon blood and the barbs and barbules from down feathers; hooklets from contour feat

Evidence of Onchocerca fasciata (Filarioidea: Onchocercidae) in camels (Camelus dromedarius): I-prevalence, nodular lesions appearance and parasite morphology.

Examination of 3376 imported and 200 local Egyptian camels was carried out during the period extending between September 1997 and August, 1998. These animals were carefully examined for the presence of Onchocerca fasciata nodules and subsequently for O. fasciata adult parasites. Results of this study revealed that imported camels had the higher infection rate (2.75%), while those of local origin showed no palpable or detected Onchocerca nodules. Distribution of these nodules was mainly on the two sides of abdomen, hind limbs (concentrated in thigh region) and fore limbs particularly on the sho

A comprehensive review of Onchocercidae nematodes (Nematoda; Filarioidea) infecting wild ruminant ungulates of North and Central America.

The family Onchocercidae, or filarioid nematodes, comprises common vector-borne parasitic worms that can infect, among other vertebrates, wild North American ruminant ungulates. Infection is a product of the available hosts and vectors distributed in viable ecosystems that permeate throughout the North America (i.e., Canada, United States, and Mexico) and Central America (i.e., Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama). The formation of these host-parasite assemblages can produce serious to no apparent clinical signs for the infected host animal depending on
