Deleterious oral habits related to vertical, transverse and sagittal dental malocclusion in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Malocclusion is highly reported among mixed dentition cases. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship of dental malocclusions in the vertical, transverse, sagittal planes with deleterious habits in pediatric patients. METHODS: A cross-sectional analytical study was carried out on 155 children aged 6-12 years attended at the clinic of the School of Dentistry of Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in 2017. RESULTS: Among 155 evaluated patients, 45.3% had vertical malocclusion, 52.0% had sagittal malocclusion and 13.6% had transverse malocclusion. The most frequent typ

Unusual allergic reaction to orthodontic wire: report of a case in a Nigerian patient and implications for clinical management.

Material reactions of both an irritant and hypersensitivity nature are not uncommon in contemporary orthodontic practices. The most common hypersensitivity reactions in orthodontic patients are due to alloy components of metal-based orthodontic appliances. This article reports a case of an unusual reaction to the component of an orthodontic appliance in a 6-year-old girl. There was associated trauma with local irritation. The implications and suggestions for management in the orthodontic clinic are reviewed.

Managing malocclusion in the mixed dentition: six keys to success. Part 1.

UNLABELLED: Indications of developing malocclusion are often present in the mixed dentition. With judicious supervision and timely intervention their effects can be minimized. The general dental practitioner is ideally placed to recognize, manage and correct many such incipient problems. This first of two papers considers three keys to success involving, normal dental development, deviations from normal eruption patterns, crossbite correction and habit cessation. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The appropriate management of developing malocclusion may simplify later orthodontic management or indeed make s

A unique treatment of finger-sucking habit in children with mental retardation: report of 2 cases.

Finger-sucking habit, or nonnutritive sucking, usually ceases spontaneously in childhood. If the habit is not broken, however, not only will dental occlusion be affected, but the shape of the finger may be altered as well. When the habit is broken, the threatening disturbances of digital growth and dental occlusion will resolve spontaneously. This article describes a unique type of habit-breaking appliance applied on the sucked fingers of 2 children with mental retardation. The advantages of this type of extraoral appliance are discussed.

Evaluation of RURS elbow guard in the management of thumb-sucking habit in children with and without intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Digit sucking is a common oral habit among many children, which involves placing the thumb/finger into the mouth, which can cause malocclusion in mixed and permanent dentition. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of the RURS elbow guard in the management of thumb-sucking habits in children with intellectual disabilities and those without in terms of the mean duration of appliance therapy. The secondary objective was to compare the RURS elbow guard with an intraoral crib in healthy children (without intellectual disabilities) to manage the habit of thumb-sucking. DESIGN: Children with i

Childhood trichotillomania treated indirectly by punishing thumb sucking.

Trichotillomania was treated in a developmentally normal three-year-old by punishing thumb sucking. A behavioral analysis indicated a chain of behaviors that began with hair pulling and terminated in thumb sucking. The parents punished the thumb sucking by applying a bad tasting substance to the thumb. Both hair pulling and thumb sucking were rapidly eliminated. The child remained symptom free at 40 month follow-up. This study represents the third time trichotillomania has been treated in a preschooler indirectly by targeting finger sucking as the behavior to change. The significance of treati

Predictors associated with malocclusion in children with and without sleep disorders: a cross-sectional study.

The aim of the present study was to investigate predictors of malocclusion in Brazilian schoolchildren eight to ten years of age based on a causal directed acyclic graph model. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 739 schoolchildren eight to ten years of age. Parents/guardians provided information on sleep disorders of the child (Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children) and family characteristics (Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale). The diagnosis of malocclusion was performed by four trained examiners using the Dental Aesthetic Index. Control variables were selected using a

Relationship of early weaning and non-nutritive sucking habits with facial development.

INTRODUCTION: Systemic racism perpetuates health disparities and negatively impacts health care delivery and patient outcomes. Racism and bias can affect every aspect of clinical care, including history-taking, physical examination, laboratory interpretation, note-writing, oral presentation, and decision-making. Medical students must learn racism- and bias-mitigation skills early in their professional development to provide high-quality, equitable care. METHODS: In November 2021, senior medical students and faculty with expertise in promoting health equity and justice in medicine designed and

The class II/1 anomaly of hereditary etiology vs. thumb-sucking etiology.

RATIONALE: The etiology of class II division 1 Angle anomaly comprises many entities, including heredity and the vicious habit of sucking the finger. A close connection between the etiology and the clinical features needs to be outlined, in order to have a more appropriate treatment approach. AIM: This study aims to find common clinical features for two groups of Class II division 1 etiological factors (heredity and the vicious habit of sucking the finger), outlining a characteristic dento-facial pattern for each etiological factor. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 160 orthodontic cases were studied,

Self-inflicted gingival injury in a 15-month-old infant.

A case is described of self-inflicted oral injury in a 15-month-old infant. The child had a habit of posturing the mandible forwards and biting the gingiva lingual to the mandibular primary incisors with the maxillary incisors, causing marked ulceration. It is suggested that the habit may have been initiated by irritation from erupting mandibular primary canines. The habit was abandoned as the canines erupted and the ulcerated area healed completely.
