Autoimmune hepatitis associated with the odour of fish food proteins: a causal relationship or just a mere association?

We present the case of a 15-year-old boy [HLA phenotype: A 1, 25 (10); B 18, 8; C 7; DR 17 (3), 6] with classic (type 1) autoimmune hepatitis presumably caused by a long-term exposure to the strong odour of food fed to a large number of tropical fish which that the boy kept in tanks in his bedroom. The boy presented with a history of recent symptoms of common cold, and a high cytomegalovirus-IgG titer, both known to activate proinflammatory cytokines. The patient's laboratory results and physical findings improved without specific treatment during his first stay in the hospital for several wee

Characterization of Protein Hydrolysates from Fish Discards and By-Products from the North-West Spain Fishing Fleet as Potential Sources of Bioactive Peptides.

Fish discards and by-products can be transformed into high value-added products such as fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) containing bioactive peptides. Protein hydrolysates were prepared from different parts (whole fish, skin and head) of several discarded species of the North-West Spain fishing fleet using Alcalase. All hydrolysates had moisture and ash contents lower than 10% and 15%, respectively. The fat content of FPH varied between 1.5% and 9.4% and had high protein content (69.8-76.6%). The amino acids profiles of FPH are quite similar and the most abundant amino acids were glutamic and

Low protein fish vs low protein animal diet enhances the propensity for stroke in stroke-prone/SHR.

Weanling male and female, stroke-prone, spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR/SP) were fed: 1) regular commercial rat chow, 2) low protein fish diet, 3) low protein fish diet + 1% saline, 4) low protein animal diet, and 5) low protein animal diet + 1% saline. The blood pressure of all of the SHR/SP rose rapidly reaching 240 mmHg at 90 days of age; blood pressure of low protein fish diet + 1% saline-fed SHR/SP rose most rapidly, reaching levels ranging from 258 to 300 mmHg. All of these animals developed acute strokes by 90 days of age; none of the other diet-fed SHR/SP manifested cerebral damag

Intradialytic protein supplementation: a comparative study of fish and whey protein on amino acid profiles of patients undergoing hemodialysis.

PURPOSE: In patients undergoing hemodialysis, poor nutritional status frequently occurs due to depletion of essential nutrients, amino acids, during dialysis sessions. Protein supplementation during dialysis is becoming common to counteract this loss. We compared effects of intradialytic ingestion of fish protein, a novel protein source, with those of the traditionally used whey protein, on blood amino acid levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis. METHODS: Ten outpatients aged ≥ 60 years undergoing hemodialysis were enrolled in this single-intervention crossover study. Participants underwe

Biomimetic Self-Renewal Polymer Brushes with Protein Resistance Inspired by Fish Skin.

Inspired by fish skin, biomimetic self-renewal poly[(ethylene oxide)-co-(ethylene carbonate)] (PEOC) brushes with protein resistance had been prepared via surface-initiated ring-opening polymerization (ROP). The results of hydrolytic degradation indicated that the PEOC brushes could degrade in artificial seawater. Ellipsometry, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry, and contact angle results demonstrated that the PEOC brushes degrade uniformly. By using a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, we studied the protein adsorption on the surfaces in artificial seawater at different degradation t

Corticotropin-releasing hormone-binding protein: biochemistry and function from fishes to mammals.

Corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) plays multiple roles in vertebrate species. In mammals, it is the major hypothalamic releasing factor for pituitary adrenocorticotropin secretion, and is a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator at other sites in the central nervous system. In non-mammalian vertebrates, CRH not only acts as a neurotransmitter and hypophysiotropin, it also acts as a potent thyrotropin-releasing factor, allowing CRH to regulate both the adrenal and thyroid axes, especially in development. The recent discovery of a family of CRH-like peptides suggests that multiple CRH-like ligan

Antacid medication inhibits digestion of dietary proteins and causes food allergy: a fish allergy model in BALB/c mice.

BACKGROUND: Digestible proteins were supposed to be irrelevant for oral sensitization and induction of food allergy. Approximately 10% of the adult population uses antacids for the treatment of dyspeptic disorders, drugs that hinder peptic digestion. In these patients, proteins that are normally degradable might act as food allergens. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to study the influence of antacid intake on the allergenicity of dietary proteins, taking sturgeon caviar and parvalbumin, the major fish allergen, as examples. METHODS: Caviar proteins and recombinant parvalbumin from carp, rCyp c 1, were a

Isolation and identification of a protease-producing bacterium from abalone intestines and its application for degradation of fish proteins.

The gastrointestinal tracts of aquatic animals provide a unique environment for microbial growth. Proteases derived from microorganisms in aquatic taxa are particularly valuable owing to their stability under various temperature and salinity conditions. The aim of this study was to isolate and identify protease-producing bacteria from the intestines of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) and to evaluate their potential applicability to fishery waste degradation. Specifically, bacteria with high protease activity were isolated from the abalone intestine and identified through 16S rRNA sequencing,

Purification of matrix Gla protein from a marine teleost fish, Argyrosomus regius: calcified cartilage and not bone as the primary site of MGP accumulation in fish.

Matrix Gla protein (MGP) belongs to the family of vitamin K-dependent, Gla-containing proteins, and in mammals, birds, and Xenopus, its mRNA was previously detected in extracts of bone, cartilage, and soft tissues (mainly heart and kidney), whereas the protein was found to accumulate mainly in bone. However, at that time, it was not evaluated if this accumulation originated from protein synthesized in cartilage or in bone cells because both coexist in skeletal structures of higher vertebrates and Xenopus. Later reports showed that MGP also accumulated in costal calcified cartilage as well as a

Identification of the origin and localization of chorion (egg envelope) proteins in an ancient fish, the white sturgeon, Acipenser transmontanus.

In many modern teleost fish, chorion (egg envelope) glycoproteins are synthesized in the liver of females, and the expression of those genes is controlled by endogenous estrogen released from the ovary during maturation. However, among the classical teleosts, such as salmonid, carp, and zebrafish, the chorion glycoproteins are synthesized in the oocyte, as in higher vertebrates. Sturgeon, which are members of the subclass Chondrostei, represent an ancient lineage of ray-finned fishes that differ from other teleosts in that their sperm possess acrosomes, their eggs have numerous micropyles, and

A Narrative Review of the Anti-Hyperglycemic and Satiating Effects of Fish Protein Hydrolysates and Their Bioactive Peptides.

Prevalence of type 2 diabetes and overweight/obesity are increasing globally. Food supplementation as a preventative option has become an attractive option in comparison to increased pharmacotherapy dependency. Hydrolysates of fish processing waste and by-products have become particularly interesting in a climate of increased food wastage awareness and are rapidly gaining traction in food research. This review summarizes the available research so far on the potential effect of these hydrolysates on diabetes and appetite suppression. Scopus and Web of Science are searched using eight keywords (

Fish protein decreases serum cholesterol in rats by inhibition of cholesterol and bile acid absorption.

Fish protein has been shown to decrease serum cholesterol content by inhibiting absorption of cholesterol and bile acid in laboratory animals, though the mechanism underlying this effect is not yet fully understood. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the mechanism underlying the inhibition of cholesterol and bile acid absorption following fish protein intake. Male Wistar rats were divided into 2 dietary groups of 7 rats each, 1 group receiving a diet consisting of 20% casein and the other receiving a diet consisting of 10% casein and 10% fish protein. Both experimental diets also conta

Mercury distribution and lipid oxidation in fish muscle: effects of washing and isoelectric protein precipitation.

Nearly all the mercury (Hg) in whole muscle from whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and walleye (Sander vitreus) was present as methyl mercury (MeHg). The Hg content in whole muscle from whitefish and walleye was 0.04-0.09 and 0.14-0.81 ppm, respectively. The myofibril fraction contained approximately three-fourths of the Hg in whitefish and walleye whole muscle. The sarcoplasmic protein fraction (e.g., press juice) was the next most abundant source of Hg. Isolated myosin, triacylglycerols, and cellular membranes contained the least Hg. Protein isolates prepared by pH shifting in the presence

Inflammatory interactions in fish exposed to pollutants and parasites: a role for apoptosis and C reactive protein.

Although previous studies have highlighted the inflammatory responses of fish infected with parasites and exposed to pollutants, very little is known about how these two stressors interact within the fish. In this review, which also contains original data, the effect of these two parameters on the fish inflammatory response is assessed and, in particular, the role of apoptosis and the acute phase protein, C reactive protein, is evaluated. In Cyprinus carpio exposed to 0.5 mg NH4+ l(-1) or 0.1 mg Cd2+ l(-1) and experimentally infected with the blood fluke, Sanguinicola inermis, the pollutant ty

Algal protein-based 3D-printed fish-analogs as a new approach for sustainable seafood.

Rising global demand for animal-products exceeds human-population growth. This unsustainable trend causes harmful ecological effects. Overfishing causes extinction of aquatic animals and a dangerous biodiversity loss harming aquatic ecosystems. Hence, replacing animal-based food, particularly beef and fish, with sustainable alternatives is an urgent vital global mission. Analogs of animal-based products include plant-based, tissue-culture-based and fermentation-based products. Fish analogs have mainly been based on plant-protein, fungi, tissue-culture, but to our knowledge, fish analogs made o

Bioinformatic and experimental fishing for artemisinin-interacting proteins from human nasopharyngeal cancer cells.

Determining interacting cellular partners of drugs by chemical proteomic techniques is complex and tedious. Most approaches rely on activity-based probe profiling and compound-centric chemical proteomics. The anti-malarial artemisinin also exerts profound anti-cancer activity, but the mechanisms of action are incompletely understood. In the present investigation, we present a novel approach to identify artemisinin-interacting target proteins. Our approach overcomes usual problems in traditional fishing procedures, because the drug was attached to a surface without further chemical modification

Effect of cyanide concentrations on the secondary structures of protein in the crude homogenates of the fish gill tissue.

The effect of cyanide concentrations on the secondary conformation of protein in the fish gill homogenate was determined using an attenuated total reflectance (ATR)/Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) microspectroscopy. Gills from male Tilapia zillii were isolated and homogenized in pH 8.0 Tris buffer solution and subjected to FT-IR study. The results indicate that the amide I and III bands of protein in fish gill homogenate deformed markedly with the increase of cyanide concentration. The fish gill homogenate shows a maximum peak at 1650 cm(-1) in amide I band, suggesting the predominant propo
