[Land and marine fauna constituting a threat for recreational divers in the tropics].

Due to intensively growing international tourism, increasing numbers of people leave for countries with hot climates, where various threats for human health and life exist. Besides climatic and sanitary conditions, a rich fauna, represented by predators and venomous animals, can be included. Based on available world literature and their own observations, the authors present the threats that a tourist can possibly encounter whilst relaxing on the beach or during recreational diving in tropical waters. When staying in water, a large threat is posed by marine fish of prey (sharks, barracuda, mura

Biochemical and physiological characterization of Sp-H, a hyaluronidase isolated from the venom of the scorpionfish Scorpaena plumieri.

Hyaluronidases are ubiquitous enzymes in animal venoms, where they act as auxiliary toxins that facilitate the diffusion of other components by hydrolyzing hyaluronic acid (HA) in the extracellular matrix. In this study, we purified and biochemically characterized a hyaluronidase from the venom of the scorpionfish Scorpaena plumieri, a venomous fish from the Brazilian coast. The enzyme, designated Sp-H, was isolated with high purity through ammonium sulfate fractionation, size-exclusion chromatography, and anion-exchange chromatography. SDS-PAGE and MALDI-TOF MS revealed a monomeric glycoprote

Components and Biological Activities of Venom from Lionfishes (Scorpaenidae: Pterois).

Fishes of the genus Pterois possess spines that provoke intense pain, which can last for weeks. Since the first toxicological description of their spine venom, a significant amount of research has been published regarding their biochemical characterization. This minireview presents research published from 1959 to 2024 on bioactive substances found in Pterois species. Pterois venom mainly contains peptides and proteins that display a range of biological activities, including anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral, enzymatic, cardiovascular, procoagulant, neurological, neuromuscular,

Aquatic antagonists: stingray injury update.

Stingrays cause more sting-related injuries than any other fish. Their venom and mechanism of injury lead to painful, poor-healing wounds that often become infected. Stingray injuries are further complicated by retained barbs and foreign bodies, which also may lead to considerable morbidity. Most stingray injuries can be treated with hot water immersion, wound debridement, and prophylactic antibiotics, while some may require more extensive treatment and surgical intervention at a tertiary care center. Educating patients about avoidance strategies, such as wading through water with a shuffling

The toxicology of greater weever (Trachinus draco): Clinical and forensic aspects.

Trachinus draco, also known as greater weever, is a venomous fish species that belongs to the Trachinidae family and is found in the northeastern Atlantic and Mediterranean. It is responsible for many European fish envenomations, particularly among fishermen, divers, and swimmers. This work aims to fully review the current knowledge regarding pathophysiology, symptomatology, treatment, and forensic aspects of greater weever stings. Trachinus draco venom, which is primarily delivered through spines, often results in excruciating pain, local inflammation, and in severe cases, even systemic sympt

Eggs-only diet: its implications for the toxin profile changes and ecology of the marbled sea snake (Aipysurus eydouxii).

Studies so far have correlated the variation in the composition of snake venoms with the target prey population and snake's diet. Here we present the first example of an alternative evolutionary link between venom composition and dietary adaptation of snakes. We describe a dinucleotide deletion in the only three finger toxin gene expressed in the sea snake Aipysurus eydouxii (Marbled Sea Snake) venom and how it may have been the result of a significant change in dietary habits. The deletion leads to a frame shift and truncation with an accompanying loss of neurotoxicity. Due to the remarkable

[Accidents with venomous and poisonous animals in Central Europe].

Central Europe is largely safe from accidents with venomous and poisonous animals. The regions where European vipers are regularly found are shrinking. Today accidents with jellyfish and stings of venomous fish afflicted during leisure activities at the sea side play the dominant role. Life threatening accidents in Europe are mainly due to exotic snakes held in captivity. A system useful in daily medical practice is explained to classify and stage accidents due to poisonous and venomous animals. The important poisonous and venomous animals of Central Europe and the specific therapeutics, the a

Novel analgesic ω-conotoxins from the vermivorous cone snail Conus moncuri provide new insights into the evolution of conopeptides.

Cone snails are a diverse group of predatory marine invertebrates that deploy remarkably complex venoms to rapidly paralyse worm, mollusc or fish prey. ω-Conotoxins are neurotoxic peptides from cone snail venoms that inhibit Cav2.2 voltage-gated calcium channel, demonstrating potential for pain management via intrathecal (IT) administration. Here, we isolated and characterized two novel ω-conotoxins, MoVIA and MoVIB from Conus moncuri, the first to be identified in vermivorous (worm-hunting) cone snails. MoVIA and MoVIB potently inhibited human Cav2.2 in fluorimetric assays and rat Cav2.2 in p

Venom evolution through gene duplications.

Venoms contain highly complex mixtures that typically include hundreds of different components and have evolved independently in a diverse range of animals including platypuses, shrews, snakes, lizards, fishes, echinoderms, spiders, wasps, centipedes, sea snails, cephalopods, jellyfish and sea anemones. Many venom genes evolved through gene duplication. Gene duplication occurs in all domains of life and provides the raw substrate from which novel function arise. In this review, we focus on the role that gene duplication has played in the origin and diversification of venom genes. We outline th

[Venomous animals and their venoms].

Animal venoms have aroused great interest during the past decades. During recent years, especially substances from marine animals have been investigated, not only in regard to their chemical structures but also to their biological relevance. Neurotoxic peptides from scorpions opened new aspects of action mechanisms on cell membranes; from snake venoms also ingredients have been obtained which serve as valuable pharmaceutical drugs.

Molecular Drivers of Mutualistic Association Between Anemone and Anemonefish.

The anemone-anemonefish mutualism is one of the most iconic in the marine environment. While the evolution of this mutualistic relationship has contributed to the ecological success of both partners, the underlying molecular processes that establish and maintain it remain poorly understood, particularly how anemonefish tolerate anemone venom. Here, we characterize the transcriptional dynamics in both the anemonefish Amphiprion clarkii and its host anemone Entacmaea quadricolor 48 h after association, providing a rare insight into the coordinated molecular processes in both partners that underl

Aquatic Antagonists: Scorpionfish Envenomation.

Scorpionfish are among the most venomous creatures found in American and Caribbean seas. Their envenomation is responsible for considerable morbidity and socioeconomic burden associated with marine animal injuries. Avoiding physical contact with scorpionfish through proper identification prevails as the chief prevention method for stings. This article discusses common features of scorpionfish as well as the clinical presentation and treatment options following exposure to its toxins.

Strategy for rapid immobilization of prey by a fish-hunting marine snail.

Some venomous animals capture prey with remarkable efficiency and speed. The purple cone, Conus purpurascens, uses two parallel physiological mechanisms requiring multiple neurotoxins to immobilize fish rapidly: neuromuscular block, and excitotoxic shock. The latter requires the newly characterized peptide kappa-conotoxin PVIIA, which inhibits the Shaker potassium channel 2-4, and beta-conotoxin PVIA5, which delays sodium-channel inactivation. Despite the extreme biochemical diversity in venoms, the number of effective strategic alternatives for prey capture are limited. How securely prey is i

Dangerous Measures: A Case Report and Review of Motoro Ray Envenomation.

Aquatic envenomations may cause severe tissue injury, neurologic morbidity, and even mortality among those whose leisure and/or occupational activities expose them to marine and freshwater animals. The Motoro ray, or Potamotrygon motoro (also known as an ocellate river stingray) is endemic to freshwater tributaries throughout Brazil, and is a frequent source of severe envenoming of local fisherman and those residing near waterways. Local wound management including immersion in warm water, wound cleaning and debridement, as well as antibiotics are mainstays of treatment, as are local anesthetic

Expression pattern of three-finger toxin and phospholipase A2 genes in the venom glands of two sea snakes, Lapemis curtus and Acalyptophis peronii: comparison of evolution of these toxins in land snakes, sea kraits and sea snakes.

BACKGROUND: Snake venom composition varies widely both among closely related species and within the same species, based on ecological variables. In terrestrial snakes, such variation has been proposed to be due to snakes' diet. Land snakes target various prey species including insects (arthropods), lizards (reptiles), frogs and toads (amphibians), birds (aves), and rodents (mammals), whereas sea snakes target a single vertebrate class (fishes) and often specialize on specific types of fish. It is therefore interesting to examine the evolution of toxins in sea snake venoms compared to that of l

[Venomous and poisonous animals. IV. Envenomations by venomous aquatic vertebrates].

Epidemiological information on marine envenomation is generally less extensive in Europe than in tropical regions where these injuries are more severe and the need for medical advice is more frequent. For these reasons use of regional Poison Control Centers in the area where the injury occurs must be encouraged. The purpose of this review is to describe envenomation by bony fish (lion fish, stone fish, and catfish), cartilaginous fish (stingrays and poisonous sharks), or other venomous aquatic vertebrates (moray-eels and marine snakes). Understanding of these envenomation syndromes is importan

Some clinical and epidemiological problems of venom poisoning today.

Poisonings caused by bites and stings of venomous animals have not lost their importance from most ancient times until today. Rather, one could say that they in some respects have become even more important due to some moments as: the interesting results of biochemical, pharmacological and immunological researches of their venoms, so as possibilities of their use in treatment and in preparation of drugs; the importation of venomous animals in loads of goods from countries with warm climate into countries where they normally would not be found; the increasing number of fanciers who keep in thei

The toxicogenomic multiverse: convergent recruitment of proteins into animal venoms.

Throughout evolution, numerous proteins have been convergently recruited into the venoms of various animals, including centipedes, cephalopods, cone snails, fish, insects (several independent venom systems), platypus, scorpions, shrews, spiders, toxicoferan reptiles (lizards and snakes), and sea anemones. The protein scaffolds utilized convergently have included AVIT/colipase/prokineticin, CAP, chitinase, cystatin, defensins, hyaluronidase, Kunitz, lectin, lipocalin, natriuretic peptide, peptidase S1, phospholipase A(2), sphingomyelinase D, and SPRY. Clinical toxicology: a tropical Australian perspective.

Tropical Australia has an amazing diversity of venomous fauna, from "the world's most venomous creature," the multi-tentacled (chirodropid) box jellyfish Chironex fleckeri, to aggressive spiders whose venom remains to be characterized. All genera of highly venomous Australasian elapid snakes are present, except for tiger snakes. Most notable is the taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus), with the most efficient "snap-release" biting mechanism of any snake and venom components causing the full constellation of clinical envenoming features: coagulopathy from fibrinogen depletion (procoagulant), neurotox

Novel venom gene discovery in the platypus.

BACKGROUND: To date, few peptides in the complex mixture of platypus venom have been identified and sequenced, in part due to the limited amounts of platypus venom available to study. We have constructed and sequenced a cDNA library from an active platypus venom gland to identify the remaining components. RESULTS: We identified 83 novel putative platypus venom genes from 13 toxin families, which are homologous to known toxins from a wide range of vertebrates (fish, reptiles, insectivores) and invertebrates (spiders, sea anemones, starfish). A number of these are expressed in tissues other tha
