Effects of common antiepileptic drugs on teleost fishes.

Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are globally prescribed to treat epilepsy and many other psychiatric disorders in humans. Their high consumption, low metabolic rate in the human body and low efficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in eliminating these chemicals results in the frequent occurrence of these pharmaceutical drugs in aquatic systems. Therefore, aquatic organisms, including ecologically and economically important teleost fishes, may be inadvertently exposed to these chemicals. Due to their physiological similarity with humans, fishes may be particularly vulnerable to AEDs. Almos

An examination of the Devonian fishes of Michigan.

Thyroid surgery once referred to as "horrid butchery" due to its high risk and complexity, has transformed dramatically over the centuries. Advances in surgical techniques, along with improvements in hemostasis and nerve identification technologies, have significantly reduced the mortality associated with thyroidectomy. The advent of intraoperative nerve monitoring and visual identification using reliable anatomical landmarks has made the identification and preservation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve almost routine. However, despite these advancements, the intricate design, variable anatomy,

Evolution of Venomous Cartilaginous and Ray-Finned Fishes.

Venom and its associated delivery systems have evolved in numerous animal groups ranging from jellyfishes to spiders, lizards, shrews, and the male platypus. Building off new data and previously published anatomical and molecular studies, we explore the evolution of and variation within venomous fishes. We show the results of the first multi-locus, ordinal-level phylogenetic analysis of cartilaginous (Chondrichthyes) and ray-finned (Actinopterygii) fishes that hypothesizes 18 independent evolutions of this specialization. Ancestral-states reconstruction indicates that among the 2386-2962 extan

[Metazoan parasites of fishes from the Bug River].

Results if the ichthyoparasitological investigation of the Bug River carried out in 1996-1999 are reported. Twenty-nine metazoan parasite species from 7 classes were found in fishes from the studied area, with the total infestation rate 63.9%. Thirteen of them parasitize fish at larval stages. Metacercariae of Opisthorchis felineus, which ate the agents of opisthorchosis in man and animals, were found in roach.

Cryptobiosis and its control in North American fishes.

Cryptobiosis is caused by the haemoflagellates Cryptobia bullocki and Cryptobia salmositica. These parasites infect food fishes (e.g. flounders, salmon) on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts of North America and clinical signs of the disease include anaemia, and abdominal distention with ascites. The virulent factor in salmonid cryptobiosis, caused by C. salmositica, is a secretory metalloprotease (200 kDa). Fish mortality may be up to 100% in the absence of treatment, consequently strategies have been developed to protect them from disease/mortality. A single dose of a live vaccine protects

Detection of infrasound and linear acceleration in fishes.

Fishes have an acute sensitivity to extremely low-frequency linear acceleration, or infrasound, even down to below 1 Hz. The otolith organs are the sensory system responsible for this ability. The hydrodynamic noise generated by swimming fishes is mainly in the infrasound range, and may be important in courtship and prey predator interactions. Intense infrasound has a deterring effect on some species, and has a potential in acoustic barriers. We hypothesize that the pattern of ambient infrasound in the oceans may be used for orientation in migratory fishes, and that pelagic fishes may detect c

Optic tectum in congenitally monophthalmic fishes and chicks.

Morphometry of optic tectum layers was performed in fishes and birds that were congenitally monophthalmic (or had one very small or malformed eye). The optic chiasm was studied with regard to possible anomalies of the fiber distribution. In two very young fish larvae with only one ocular rudiment, no differences were found between the two tecta. In fishes and chicks with one normal and one eye of reduced size, the volume of superficial tectal layers contralateral to the small eye was significantly more affected (reduction by 40 to 70%) than that of the deep layers (reduction by 10 to 30%). [Extra-bulbar primary olfactory projection in teleost fishes].

Immunohistochemical investigations with anti-substance P antiserum demonstrate the existence of an extensive extrabulbar primary olfactory projection in several gymnotid teleost fish. This projection, never described before, originates in particular primary olfactory bundles which enter with the olfactory nerve into the olfactory bulb. While the bulk of the olfactory fibers end with glomeruli in the glomerular layer of the olfactory bulb, two particular bundles penetrate into the telencephalon and end, without forming glomeruli, in several telencephalic and diencephalic regions. A few fibers r

Supramedullary Neurons in Teleost Fishes: Distribution and Putative Functions.

Supramedullary neurons (SMNs) were described almost 150 years ago as large, unipolar cells whose somata are located on the dorsal aspect of the medulla oblongata and spinal cord in adults of teleost fishes. SMNs are either aligned in a single, median longitudinal row, generally extending over the rostral third of the spinal cord, or clustered over the medulla oblongata and rostral spinal cord. We add to the list of species that have SMNs and provide the first description of a novel distribution of SMNs along most of the spinal cord in the oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) and sea raven (Hemitripte

Integrative analyses of convergent adaptation in sympatric extremophile fishes.

The evolution of independent lineages along replicated environmental transitions frequently results in convergent adaptation, yet the degree to which convergence is present across multiple levels of biological organization is often unclear. Additionally, inherent biases associated with shared ancestry and variation in selective regimes across geographic replicates often pose challenges for confidently identifying patterns of convergence. We investigated a system in which three species of poeciliid fishes sympatrically occur in a toxic spring rich in hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and an adjacent nonsu

The Diversity of the Brains of Ray-Finned Fishes.

Brains are very plastic, both in response to phenotypic diversity and to larger evolutionary trends. Differences between taxa cannot be easily attributed to either factors. Comparative morphological data on higher taxonomic levels are scarce, especially in ray-finned fishes. Here we show the great diversity of brain areas of more than 150 species of ray-finned fishes by volumetric measurements using block-face imaging. We found that differences among families or orders are more likely due to environmental needs than to systematic position. Most notable changes are present in the brain areas pr

Adaptations and Diversity of Antarctic Fishes: A Genomic Perspective.

Antarctic notothenioid fishes are the classic example of vertebrate adaptive radiation in a marine environment. Notothenioids diversified from a single common ancestor ∼22 Mya to between 120 and 140 species today, and they represent ∼90% of fish biomass on the continental shelf of Antarctica. As they diversified in the cold Southern Ocean, notothenioids evolved numerous traits, including osteopenia, anemia, cardiomegaly, dyslipidemia, and aglomerular kidneys, that are beneficial or tolerated in their environment but are pathological in humans. Thus, notothenioids are models for understanding a

Diversity of Vibrio parahaemolyticus in marine fishes of Bangladesh.

AIMS: To determine the occurrence, diversity, antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus isolated from marine fishes in Bangladesh. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 80 marine fishes were obtained from the local markets and examined for the presence of V. parahaemolyticus. All the isolated V. parahaemolyticus were characterized for the presence of virulence markers, thermostable direct hemolysin (TDH) or thermostable direct hemolysin related hemolysin (TRH). Isolates were serotyped and further characterized by enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus sequence

Large batoid fishes frequently consume stingrays despite skeletal damage.

The shapes of vertebrate teeth are often used as hallmarks of diet. Here, however, we demonstrate evidence of frequent piscivory by cartilaginous fishes with pebble-like teeth that are typically associated with durophagy, the eating of hard-shelled prey. High-resolution micro-computed tomography observation of a jaw specimen from one batoid species and visual investigation of those of two additional species reveal large numbers of embedded stingray spines, arguing that stingray predation of a scale rivalling that of the largest carnivorous sharks may not be uncommon for large, predatory batoid

The cerebellum and cerebellum-like structures of cartilaginous fishes.

The cerebellum is well developed in cartilaginous fishes, with the same cell types (barring basket cells) and organizational features found in other vertebrate groups, including mammals. In particular, the lattice-like organization of cerebellar cortex (with a molecular layer of parallel fibers, interneurons, spiny Purkinje cell dendrites, and climbing fibers) is a defining characteristic. In addition to the cerebellum, cartilaginous fishes have cerebellum-like structures in the dorsolateral wall of the hindbrain. These structures are adjacent to and, in part, contiguous with the cerebellum. T

Very low pressures drive ventilatory flow in chimaeroid fishes.

Chimaera (Holocephali) are cartilaginous fishes with flexible operculi rather than external gill slits, suggesting ventilation occurs in a manner different from other fishes. We examined holocephalan ventilation morphology, behavior, and performance by anatomical investigations, high-speed video, and in vivo pressure measurements from the buccal and parabranchial cranial cavities in Hydrolagus colliei and Callorhinchus callorynchus. Ventilatory modes ranged from quiet resting breathing to rapid "active" breathing, yet external cranial movements-excepting the passive movement of the opercular f

Reproductive, developmental, and neurobehavioral effects of methylmercury in fishes.

In the decades since the Minamata tragedy in Japan, there has been a considerable body of research performed on effects of methylmercury in fishes. The studies have revealed that some of the most sensitive responses seen in fishes are reminiscent of the symptoms experienced by the Minamata victims. This article reviews the literature, with a focus on mercury's effects on fish reproduction (hormone levels, gametogenesis, fertilization success), embryonic development (morphological abnormalities, rate), the development of behavior, and neurobehavioral effects in adults. Both experimental exposur

Diagnostic criteria for proliferative thyroid lesions in bony fishes.

Thyroid proliferative lesions are rather common in bony fishes but disagreement exists in the fish pathology community concerning diagnostic criteria for hyperplastic versus neoplastic lesions. To simplify the diagnosis of proliferative thyroid lesions and to reduce confusion regarding lesion interpretation, we propose specific criteria for distinguishing hyperplastic from neoplastic lesions. Development of these criteria was based on the examination of a large series of proliferative lesions from Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes), lesions from other small fish species, and a reexamination of
