PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe a novel surgical method for the sutureless placement of amniotic membrane on the bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva in the setting of ocular-involving acute Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
METHODS: Within 6 days of an acute Stevens-Johnson episode, a 27-year-old male developed early symblepharon, despite aggressive lubrication and topical steroid therapy. He underwent symblepharon lysis and placement of an amniotic membrane wrapped around a symblepharon ring.
RESULTS: The patient maintained 20/20 vision in each eye with no recurrent symblepharon formati

PURPOSE: Primary congenital glaucoma (PCG) is a significant cause of childhood vision loss. While visual acuity can be measured, it does not always reflect visual functioning in daily life, particularly as oculomotor skills are often compromised in ocular disorders. This pilot study assesses oculomotor behavior in children with PCG compared to healthy peers using the Device for an Integral Visual Examination (DIVE).
METHODS: Twelve children with PCG (n = 24 eyes) and 24 healthy children (n = 48 eyes), aged 6 months to 4 years, were recruited. DIVE was used for automated oculomotor assessments

BACKGROUND: Despite numerous investigations on how to manage zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures (ZMCFs), the best treatment option remains uncertain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of three-point fixation with orbital floor reconstruction in restoring orbital morphology and managing post-traumatic ocular complications associated with ZMCFs, as well as to measure the postoperative reduction in orbital volume (OV).
METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study was conducted on patients with unilateral ZMCFs and orbital floor fractures with a completely intact

We studied vertical fixation disparity (VFD) with the purpose of assisting the clinician in the evaluation of patients having vertical heterophoria and/or vertical anisometropia and in the prescription of an appropriate vertical prismatic correction. Our research shows that VFD represents a relatively stable and reliable measurement of the vertical deviation; provides the clinician with a mechanism to study a patient's ability to adapt to an induced vertical fusional demand; and provides a process to determine the amount of the vertical prismatic correction.

The frequency of square wave jerks (SWJ) was compared in eight patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 25 patients with multiple system atrophy or Parkinson's disease plus (MSA/PP), 85 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (PD) and 20 age-matched normal volunteers. In the control group, the mean (SD) SWJ frequency (SWJ larger than 1 degree amplitude) was 2.3 (2.4)/min. Abnormal ocular fixation (SWJ frequency greater than 10/min) was observed in a large proportion of PSP patients (7/8) and of MSA/PP patients (16/25) but in few PD patients (13/85). In the group of PD patients

Binocular diplopia occurs from misalignment of the eyes. The fixation object is imaged onto the fovea of one eye and a nonfoveal region of the misaligned eye, creating diplopia. Treatment options include ocular occlusion, monovision optical correction, prism glasses, strabismus surgery, and chemodenervation. Ocular occlusion and monovision optical correction enable the patient to ignore the image from the misaligned eye. Prism glasses alter the light pathways so that the fixation object is imaged onto the fovea of both eyes, despite ocular misalignment. Strabismus surgery and chemodenervation

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) can have inadequate support for placement in the capsular bag as a result of ocular trauma, metabolic or inherited conditions such as Marfan's syndrome or pseudoexfoliation, or complicated cataract surgery. Surgical options for patients with inadequate capsular support include alternative placement in the anterior chamber (ACIOLs), fixation to the iris, or fixation to the sclera. The surgical techniques for each of these approaches have improved considerably over the last several decades resulting in improved visual and ocular outcomes. If no capsular or iris support

The aim of the study was to describe ocular motility in a sample of 56 patients affected by cerebral visual impairment (CVI) of hypoxic-ischemic origin. The sample consisted of 56 participants (37 males and 19 females), ranging in age from 2 to 16 years. In all cases CVI was associated with MRI-verified damage of the cerebral visual system. A complete ophthalmologic and neurological assessment was performed. Behaviour of gaze was studied in four conditions: during scanning of the surrounding environment, during fixation, execution of saccades, and pursuing. In addition, strabismus, nystagmus,

The purpose of this study was to determine the characteristics of the clinically measured vertical fixation disparity (VFD) curve and the ability to adapt to vertical prism for patients who have a vertical heterophoria and are comfortably wearing vertical prism, and to relate these data to similar findings for nonvertical heterophoria patients. The correlation between the amount of vertical prism that was being worn comfortably and the amount of vertical prism that reduced the VFD to zero was also evaluated. The results indicate that patients with vertical heterophoria who are wearing vertical

BACKGROUND: In prolonged disorders of consciousness (DoC), visual fixation and smooth pursuit are among the earliest signs of re-emerging awareness. Yet, because their physiology relies heavily on brainstem–cerebellar circuitry, it remains debated whether these ocular behaviors invariably reflect consciousness or, after severe brain injury, also arise from reflexive/subcortical mechanisms. METHODS: To address this question, we conducted a PRISMA-ScR scoping review of PubMed/MEDLINE and Scopus to verify the behavioral and neural correlates of fixation and pursuit. Ocular behavior evidence was c

BACKGROUND: Ocular prevalence is defined as an unequal weighting of the eyes in the directional perception of stereo objects. Opinions differ as to the cause and relevance of ocular prevalence. Hans-Joachim Haase suggested that ocular prevalence is due to fixation disparity, brought about by incomplete compensation of heterophoria. He further suggested that prismatic spectacles determined by his "measuring and correcting methodology" (MKH) could restore bicentral fixation and thus establish a perceptual balance between both eyes.
METHODS: We examined 10 non-strabismic subjects with a visual a

To investigate systemic diseases and ocular problems among children with developmental delay, forty-one children (28 boys and 13 girls with a mean age of 3.53 +/- 2.25 y/o) were enrolled in this study. In addition to ocular examinations, we used centrality, steadiness, fixation and flash visual evoked potentials (VEPs) tests on all of the children. We found that 23 children (56.10%) had ocular problems with optic atrophy and strabismus being the two most common ocular abnormalities. The two major clinical manifestations of developmentally delayed children were mental and motor retardation. The

BACKGROUND: The corpus callosum is a primary commissural part of the brain which connects the two hemispheres. Processing sensory, motor, visuo-motor and cognitive functions are related to a healthy connection. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the ocular, neurologic and other systemic findings of corpus callosum malformations and to focus on the association between the ocular and neurological findings and the type of callosal malformation according to cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 57 patients with corpus callosum malformation was perform

BACKGROUND: The risk assessment for video display terminal (VDT) operators in occupational settings often relies on indirect estimates, such as self-reported screen time, which may not accurately reflect the true visual workload. The objective is to assess visual workload in VDT workers by measuring active screen fixation time with a non-invasive monitoring system and to explore its relationship with ocular surface alterations and fatigue-related indicators.
METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted on 38 administrative workers employed at a hospital booking center. Active

This study sought to determine whether proximally-induced accommodation (PIA) is capable of sustaining an accommodative response over time. Accordingly, the steady-state PIA response was measured during the course of a continuous 5 min stimulus period for targets located at distances of 0.2 or 6 m. The vergence and accommodation loops were opened by subjects (n = 8) monocularly viewing the targets through a 0.5 mm pinhole, while accommodation was assessed using an objective, open-field, infrared optometer. The mean PIA response did not change significantly during the fixation period. This find

BACKGROUND: The natural evolution toward emmetropia is governed by genetic factors, but experiments with animals have demonstrated that a feedback mechanism that depends on visual function may regulate ocular growth. We attempted to verify this hypothesis in school-age patients with amblyopia by observing the ocular growth and the refractive state in the fixating and nonfixating eye in myopia and hypermetropia. This situation simulates the animal model.
METHODS: In 30 consecutive school-age patients with amblyopia, we prospectively evaluated axial length with echobiometry and the refractive s
