An evaluation of the response of some portable, direct-reading 10.2 eV and 11.8 eV photoionization detectors, and a flame ionization gas chromatograph for organic vapors in high humidity atmospheres.

Three portable, direct-reading instruments were tested to evaluate their ability to detect organic vapors in high humidity atmospheres. The instruments included two photoionization detectors (10.2 eV and 11.8 eV), and an organic vapor analyzer with a flame ionization detector. The organic vapors used were hexanes, 1,1-dichloroethane, chloroform, trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, benzene, toluene and chlorobenzene. Relatively impervious gas bags were used to contain atmospheres of low (zero) and high (90 percent) relative humidities for comparisons. The response of the organic vapor analyze

Determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes in indoor air at environmental levels using diffusive samplers in combination with headspace solid-phase microextraction and high-resolution gas chromatography-flame ionization detection.

An improved analytical method for passive air sampling is presented based on a combination of commercially available diffusive samplers with headspace solid-phase microextraction and high-resolution gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (HRGC-FID). This procedure is targeted for short-term BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and o-, m- and p-xylenes) determinations at environmental concentrations and can be applied for sampling intervals between 30 min and 24 h. The analytes are adsorbed onto the charcoal pad of a passive sampler and then extracted with carbon disulphide-methanol

Effervescent tablet-assisted demulsified dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction based on solidification of floating organic droplet for determination of methadone in water and biological samples prior to GC-flame ionization and GC-MS.

A novel effervescent tablet-assisted demulsified dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction based on the solidification of floating organic droplet was developed to determine methadone prior to gas chromatography with flame ionization detection and gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. In this method, a tablet composed of citric acid, sodium carbonate, and 1-undecanol was utilized. The resulting effervescent tablet generated carbon dioxide in situ to disperse 1-undecanol in the sample. Thus, the dispersive and extraction processes were performed in one synchronous step. An aliquot of aceton

Novel analytical methods for flame retardants and plasticizers based on gas chromatography, comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography, and direct probe coupled to atmospheric pressure chemical ionization-high resolution time-of-flight-mass spectrometry.

In this study, we assess the applicability of different analytical techniques, namely, direct probe (DP), gas chromatography (GC), and comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) coupled to atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) with a high resolution (HR)-time-of-flight (TOF)-mass spectrometry (MS) for the analysis of flame retardants and plasticizers in electronic waste and car interiors. APCI-HRTOFMS is a combination scarcely exploited yet with GC or with a direct probe for screening purposes and to the best of our knowledge, never with GC × GC to provide comprehensi

Activated aluminum oxide selectively retaining long chain n-alkanes: Part II. Integration into an on-line high performance liquid chromatography-liquid chromatography-gas chromatography-flame ionization detection method to remove plant paraffins for the determination of mineral paraffins in foods and environmental samples.

Aluminum oxide activated by heating to 300-400 degrees C retains n-alkanes with more than about 20 carbon atoms, whereas iso-alkanes largely pass non-retained (with characteristics described in more detail in Part I). This property is useful for the analysis of mineral oil contamination of foods and other matrices: it enables the removal of plant n-alkanes, typically ranging from C(23) to C(33), when they disturb the analysis of mineral paraffins (usually almost exclusively consisting of iso-alkanes). An on-line HPLC-LC-GC-FID method is proposed in which a first silica gel HPLC column isolates

[Test method of methanol content in detergent].

A test method of methanol content in detergent using a headspace-GC method was established. A 1 g aliquot of test sample was mixed with 0.4 mg of 2-propanol and made up to 20 mL with water. Then, 5 mL of test solution was placed in a headspace vial. The vial was sealed and incubated for 30 min at 60°C, then the headspace gas was analyzed by GC-FID. The recovery from spiked 1 mg/g of methanol was 95.6-100.6%. The determination limit was 0.1 mg/g. Using this method, the methanol content in 14 kinds of detergents was quantified. Methanol was detected from two detergents at the levels of 0.13 and

Laser-enhanced ionization and laser-induced atomic fluorescence as element-specific detection methods for gas chromatography. Application to organotin analysis.

We have demonstrated that flame laser-enhanced ionization (LEI) and flame laser-induced atomic fluorescence (LIAF) techniques can be used as, alternative sensitive detectors for gas chromatographic (GC) analysis of organotin compounds. These two element-specific detection methods are free from interferences from the organic solvent. Two types of LEI schemes for Sn detection are employed. For the two-step LEI scheme (TLEI), the tin atoms in the flame were stepwise excited and then ionized collisionally. In contrast, in detection with the single-step LEI scheme (SLEI), only one dye laser is used

The secretion of ibuprofen metabolites interferes with the capillary chromatography of urinary homovanillic acid and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxymandelic acid in neuroblastoma diagnosis.

Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children. Abnormal secretion of catecholamines in tissues and body fluids allows for the differential diagnosis of neuroblastoma from other neoplasms and its distinction from non-neoplastic inflammatory diseases. This is achieved by assaying homovanillic acid and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxymandelic acid, the catabolites of catecholamine metabolism. In the course of an evaluation of children with suspected neuroblastoma, homovanillic acid and 4-hydroxy-3-methoxymandelic acid were analyzed in urine samples by capillary gas chromatography with

Utilizing two detectors in the measurement of trichloroacetic acid in human urine by reaction headspace gas chromatography.

A reaction headspace gas chromatography (HS-GC) technique was investigated for quantitatively analyzing trichloroacetic acid in human urine. This method is based on the decomposition reaction of trichloroacetic acid under high-temperature conditions. The carbon dioxide and chloroform formed from the decomposition reaction can be respectively detected by the thermal conductivity detection HS-GC and flame ionization detection HS-GC. The reaction can be completed in 60 min at 90°C. This method was used to quantify 25 different human urine samples, which had a range of trichloroacetic acid from 0.

Sulfolane as a novel stationary phase for analytical separations by gas chromatography.

Sulfolane is explored as a novel stationary phase for use in analytical separations by capillary column gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Stainless steel capillaries were found to provide a good substrate for coating and retaining a sulfolane phase, whereas fused silica tubing did not perform well for this. In general, the phase was found to be stable for several hours of use when using elevated carrier gas pressures (90 psi) and a small restriction (25 μm I.D. tubing) at the outlet. This normally provided good performance at temperatures up to about 200 °C with very

A Static Headspace Gas Chromatography Method for Quantitation of Residual Solvents in Nanoformulations.

Various organic solvents are widely used in the manufacturing, processing, and purification of drug substances, drug products, formulations, excipients, etc. These solvents must be removed to the lowest amount permitted, as they do not possess any therapeutic advantages and may cause undesirable toxicities. Therefore, a rapid and sensitive analytical method for the quantitation of residual solvents is needed. The following chapter presents a static headspace gas chromatographic (HSGC) method for determining the concentration of common residual solvents in various nanoformulations. An efficient

Development of a Gas-Tight Syringe Headspace GC-FID Method for the Detection of Ethanol, and a Description of the Legal and Practical Framework for Its Analysis, in Samples of English and Welsh Motorists' Blood and Urine.

Ethanol is the most commonly used recreational drug worldwide. This study describes the development and validation of a headspace gas chromatography flame ionisation detection (HS-GC-FID) method using dual columns and detectors for simultaneous separation and quantitation. The use of a dual-column, dual-detector HS-GC-FID to quantitate ethanol is a common analytical technique in forensic toxicology; however, most analytical systems utilise pressure-balance injection rather than a simplified gas-tight syringe, as per this technique. This study is the first to develop and validate a technique th

[The quantitative determination of cyanide by FTD-GC].

In recent buildings, new materials containing chemical goods, chemical fibers and the like are in common use. Some of them evolve hydrogen cyanide (HCN) when burning. When a person meets a fire, therefore, it is necessary to measure his blood concentration of HCN as well as that of CO-Hb%. The blood concentration of HCN can be measured by colorimetry such as pyridine-pyrazolone method, gas-chromatography, electrode method, or the like. However, these methods require much time in pretreatment and the preparation of the reagent. We have investigated to find a new measurement method free from the

Development of a Novel Ultrasound Vacuum-Assisted Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Approach for Determination of Solvent Residuals in Pharmaceuticals and Comparison with Traditional Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction Method.

In this report, an ultrasonication and vacuum-assisted headspace solid-phase microextraction procedure followed by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (UVA-HS-SPME-GC-FID) was proposed for direct extraction of solvent residuals, including benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, m,p-xylene and o-xylene, in pharmaceutical matrices. A novel robust, reliable and durable nanocomposite solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fiber was prepared by layer-by-layer coating of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane-functionalized graphene on a stainless-steel wire. Then, the proposed fiber was used for headspace SPM

GLC-mass spectrometric procedure with selected-ion monitoring for determination of plasma concentrations of unlabeled and labeled barbital following simultaneous oral and intravenous administration.

A GLC-mass spectometric method employing specific-ion monitoring was developed for the determination of plasma concentrations of labeled (15N1,3, 13C2) and unlabeled barbital following simultaneous intravenous and oral administration. This method proved to be more sensitive and precise than the method employing GLC with flame-ionization detection or GLC with alkali flame-ionization detection. GC Determination of Fluorouracil in Serum by Using Hexafluroroacetylacetone as Derivatizing Reagent.

A gas chromatographic (GC) procedure has been developed for the determination of fluorouracil (5-FU) after pre-column derivatization with hexafluoroacetylacetone. GC separation was from column DB-1 (30 m × 0.32 mm id) and the determination was by flame-ionization detection. The derivatization conditions were optimized at pH 4, heating at 90°C for 40 min and extraction of the derivative was in chloroform. Using the conditions nucleobases cytosine, uracil, thymine, adenine and guanine separated completely from fluorouracil. The linear calibration range and LOD for 5-fluorouracil were 0.5-40.0 an
