Identification of a mobilizable, multidrug-resistant genomic island in Myroides odoratimimus isolated from Tibetan pasture.

Strains of the environmental bacterium Myroides odoratimimus can cause human infections. However, treating M. odoratimimus infections can be difficult because of multidrug resistance in this organism. In this study, we isolated strain M. odoratimimus G13 from pastureland in Tibet, China. The minimum inhibitory concentration analysis suggested that strain G13 has resistance to multiple antibiotics, with an MIC for tetracycline of 168 mg/L. Whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis revealed that the genome of G13 was rich in virulence factor-encoding genes and antibiotic resistance gene

Candidate Animal Disease Model of Elizabethkingia Spp. Infection in Humans, Based on the Systematic Pathology and Oxidative Damage Caused by E. miricola in Pelophylax nigromaculatus.

Most species of the genus Elizabethkingia are pathogenic to humans and animals, most commonly causing meningitis. However, our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms involved is poor and there have been few pathological studies of Elizabethkingia spp. in animals. To understand the host injury induced by Elizabethkingia spp., we established a model of E. miricola infection in the black-spotted frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus). The systematic pathology in and oxidative damage in the infection model were investigated. Our results show that recently isolated E. miricola is a bacterium that mai

Mini review: New pathogen profiles: Elizabethkingia anophelis.

Within a little more than 5 years since its taxonomic description in 2011, from the midgut of mosquitoes, Elizabethkingia anophelis has emerged as an important causes of sepsis in adults and children and in cases of neonatal meningitis. At least 3 moderate- to large-scale outbreaks of disease have been caused by this bacterium, the largest 2 occurring in the Midwest United States in 2015-2016. Several studies suggest that E. anophelis, and not E. meningoseptica, is the predominant human pathogen of this genus; identification to species is difficult. Little is presently known regarding its epid

Clinical Features and Outcomes of Myroides Species Infections.

BACKGROUND: Myroides species, Gram-negative bacilli from the Flavobacteriaceae family, are typically considered low-virulence pathogens but have previously been described as extensively drug-resistant. This study investigates the clinical features and outcomes of Myroides infections. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients hospitalized at Cleveland Clinic with Myroides infection. Infections were defined as a positive Myroides culture from a sterile site that were treated with an antibiotic to which the isolate was susceptible. Controls were hospitalized patients with a

Why Asplenic Patients Should Not Take Care of the Neighbour's Dog? A Fatal Course of Capnocytophaga canimorsus Sepsis.

Capnocytophaga canimorsus (CC) belongs to the family Flavobacteriaceae which physiologically occurs in the natural flora of the oral mucosa of dogs and cats. In patients with a compromised immune system, CC can induce a systemic infection with a fulminant course of disease. Infections with CC are rare, and the diagnosis is often complicated and prolonged. We describe a patient with a medical history of prior splenectomy who presented with an acute sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) and was initially treated on Waterhouse-Friderichsen syndrome (WFS). After the patient had d

Isolation, characterization and evaluation of a novel phage against Elizabethkingia anophelis.

The rise of multidrug-resistant Elizabethkingia anophelis (E. anophelis) presents a significant public health challenge. Here, we report the isolation, morphological and biological characterization, and genomic analysis of a novel lytic bacteriophage, XANYB1, targeting E. anophelis. XANYB1 was isolated from hospital wastewater in Xi’an, China, using a clinical strain as the host. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that XANYB1 belongs to the order Caudoviricetes, featuring icosahedral heads and long, non-contractile tails. Whole-genome sequencing showed very low similarity to known phage

Infectious endocarditis caused by Elizabethkingia spp.: Two case reports and a literature review.

We report two cases of Elizabethkingia-related infective endocarditis, highlighting key risk factors such as prosthetic valve replacement. These cases underscore the need to consider endocarditis in the setting of persistent or recurrent bacteremia. Diagnosis proved challenging and required multiple imaging modalities, with positron emission tomography (PET) scan providing critical value when echocardiography was non-contributory. Management was complicated by the organism's intrinsic multidrug resistance and the rapid emergence of additional resistance during therapy. These cases emphasize th

Comparative genomic assessment of members of genus Tenacibaculum: an exploratory study.

Tenacibaculosis is an ulcerative skin disorder that affects finfish. It is caused by members of the genus Tenacibaculum, resulting in eccentric behavioural changes, including anorexia, lethargy, and abnormal swimming patterns that often result in mortality. Currently, species suspected of causing fish mortality include T. ovolyticum, T. gallaicum, T. discolor, T. finnmarkense, T. mesophilum, T. soleae, T. dicentrarchi, and T. maritimum. However, pathogenic members and the mechanisms involved in disease causation, progression, and transmission are limited due to the inadequate sequencing effort

Elizabethkingia in the MENA region (2000-2024): a review of distribution, antimicrobial resistance, and clinical features.

Elizabethkingia is a family of bacteria present in the environment causing infections that have emerged as a significant clinical concern in the Middle East and North Africa region. Despite sporadic reports and case studies, the epidemiology of Elizabethkingia-encompassing its prevalence, antimicrobial resistance profiles, and clinical outcomes-remains largely anecdotal and fragmented. In this review, we systematically screened and analyzed the published literature to provide a comprehensive assessment of the distribution, antibiotic resistance characteristics, and clinical features of Elizabe

Detection of Gallibacterium spp. in chickens by fluorescent 16S rRNA in situ hybridization.

Gallibacterium has recently been included as a new genus of the family Pasteurellaceae Pohl 1981, which encompasses bacteria previously reported as Pasteurella anatis, "Actinobacillus salpingitidis," and avian Pasteurella haemolytica-like organisms. So far, identification has exclusively relied on phenotypic characterization. We present a method based on a cyanine dye 3.18-labeled in situ hybridization probe targeting 16S rRNA to allow specific detection of bacteria belonging to the genus Gallibacterium. The probe, GAN850, showed no cross-reactivity to 25 other poultry-associated bacterial spe

The clinical challenge of Elizabethkingia infections: multidrug resistance, epidemiology, and management strategies.

Elizabethkingia species, particularly E. anophelis, have emerged as formidable opportunistic pathogens causing severe infections such as meningitis, bacteremia, and pneumonia, with mortality rates ranging from 24% to 60%. This narrative review provides a comprehensive overview of the complex resistance mechanisms of these bacteria, drawing on in vitro studies, genomic analyses, and observational clinical data. Where available, we indicate the level of supporting evidence, and highlight mechanisms supported by gene knockout experiments, single-strain proteomic analyses, or retrospective case se

EBR-1, a novel Ambler subclass B1 beta-lactamase from Empedobacter brevis.

Empedobacter brevis (formerly designated Flavobacterium breve) is a gram-negative aerobe involved in nosocomial infections. The Ambler class B beta-lactamase gene bla(EBR-1) was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli from E. brevis clinical strain ASS-1, which had reduced susceptibility to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins and carbapenems. Purified beta-lactamase EBR-1 hydrolyzed penicillins, cephalosporins, and carbapenems efficiently but not aztreonam. Kinetic parameters of EBR-1 were similar to those of class B enzymes such as BlaB, IND-2, and GOB-1 identified from other Flavobacteriaceae
