[Effect of Flax lignans on apoptosis of growth plate chondrocytes in rats].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of different concentrations of linolenin on inhibiting apoptosis of chondrocytes in the growth plate, and to screen the optimal concentration of linolenin, so as to provide theoretical support for delaying epiphyseal closure and promoting long bone growth in rats. METHODS: Two 4-week-old male SD rats (SPF grade) with a body mass of 80 g were selected. The growth plate cartilage of rat tibia and femur was dissected and isolated in vitro to obtain growth plate chondrocytes for culture. The chondrocytes were observed and identified by inverted phase contrast mic

Antioxidant Potential of Hemp and Flax Fibers Depending on Their Chemical Composition.

Flax and hemp fibers are known as textile raw materials with pro-health properties. This paper presents results of research aimed at investigating the antioxidant activity of the fibers in order to explain a mechanism for the favorable influence of textiles made of these fibers when in contact with human skin. The study presents a new approach in evaluation of textile fibers in terms of their inherent pro-health properties. Antioxidant properties of flax and hemp fibers were tested with the use of FRAP and DPPH methods. The content of phenolic acids: syringic, sinapinic, p-coumaric and ferulic

A site-specific insertion sequence in flax genotrophs induced by environment.

A single-copy 5.7 kilobase (kb) DNA fragment, termed Linum Insertion Sequence 1 (LIS-1), has been identified and characterized. This is one of the DNA changes associated with the environmentally induced heritable changes resulting in stable lines termed genotrophs in flax (Linum usitatissimum). The insertion sequence and its insertion site have been cloned from genomic libraries and sequenced. PCR products across the insertion and surrounding regions have also been cloned and sequenced. The 5.7 kb DNA fragment is inserted into a 3.7 kb EcoRI fragment in the plastic line (Pl) with the generatio

Prevalence of byssinosis and dust levels in flax preparers in Northern Ireland.

The association between the prevalence of both byssinosis and chronic bronchitis and the level of airborne dust was examined in workers in preparing departments in flax mills in Northern Ireland. A weak association between the dust level and byssinosis was found but not between the dust level and chronic bronchitis. It is suggested that the disparity of these associations may have arisen because the diagnosis of byssinosis, as in most recent published studies, was based on relatively acute and reversible symptoms which are more likely to be closely related to the current dust levels than the s

BYSSINOSIS AND OTHER RESPIRATORY SYMPTOMS IN FLAX WORKERS IN NORTHERN IRELAND.

A study of byssinosis and other respiratory symptoms in 2,528 flax workers aged 35 years and over in Northern Ireland is reported. This represented 82·5% of the total available population. Only 3% of workers were not seen because of absence or a refusal to co-operate. Workers were interviewed using a questionnaire based on the Questionnaire on Respiratory Symptoms (Medical Research Council, 1960a) with additional questions relating to respiratory symptoms at work. Byssinosis was found in workers in all stages of the industry, though its prevalence was highest in flax preparers; wet spinners an

CHANGES IN VENTILATORY CAPACITY IN A GROUP OF FLAX WORKERS IN NORTHERN IRELAND.

One-second forced expiratory volume (F.E.V.1·0) and forced vital capacity (F.V.C.) were measured before starting work in five flax hacklers with symptoms of grade II byssinosis and in five matched controls. Similar measurements were taken in each group at the end of the day shift. A significant (P < 0·05) decline in F.E.V.1·0 was observed in the hacklers during the day on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday. The F.V.C. also declined significantly in the hacklers on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. In the control group, ventilatory function tended to decline during the day, but this was signi

Distribution of cadmium-binding components in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) seed.

The distribution of cadmium- (Cd-) binding components in flaxseed (cultivar NorMan) containing 0.526 ppm (ng/mg) Cd was investigated. Proteins extracted from dehulled, defatted flaxseed were fractionated by anion-exchange and size-exclusion chromatography. The contents of Cd and other metals, UV/visible spectral characteristics, and amino acid compositions of these fractions were analyzed. Over 66% of the eluted Cd was recovered by 0.1 M NaCl elution from DEAE-Sephacel, in a thiol-rich fraction representing only 7% of the extracted proteins. Sephadex G50 size-exclusion chromatography of this 0

Coumarins in Phormium (New Zealand flax) fibers: their role in fluorescence and photodegradation.

The genus Phormium (New Zealand flax) has fiber possessing a high content of lignin and, like other lignocellulosic materials, it is subject to photodegradation. Photoproducts in the fiber absorbing over a broad spectral region from ∼370 to 600nm are observed as a result of exposure to near-UV radiation from 350 to 400 nm. Irradiation was shown to produce hydrogen peroxide and this can account, at least in part, for the photo-oxidation manifested in changes in the reflectance spectra of the fibers. Unirradiated solid fibers and their aqueous extracts exhibit fluorescence with excitation maxima

Enhancement of Thermal Behaviour of Flax with a Ramie Fibre-Reinforced Polymer Composite.

Plant-derived fibres, called lignocellulosic fibres, are a natural alternative to synthetic fibres in polymer composite reinforcement. Utilizing renewable resources, such as fibre-reinforced polymeric composites made from plant and animal sources, has become a crucial design requirement for developing and producing parts for all industrial goods. Natural-fibre-based composites are used for door panels, trays, glove boxes, etc. This study involves developing and thermal analysing a flax fibre reinforced with phenol-formaldehyde resin hybridization with ramie fibre by way of a vacuum infusion pr

[Effects of jute, ramee, flax dusts on rabbit alveolar macrophages in vitro].

The effects of jute, ramee, flax dusts on alveolar macrophage (AM) were observed by cell culture. The results indicated that AM could be damaged by all of the three kinds of dusts. The viability was decreased. The activity of lactic dehydrogenase (LDH) and acid phosphatase (AcP) in the culture supernatant was increased. The morphology of AM was damaged. But the toxicity effect of the three dusts was less than that of SiO2 and chrysotile asbestos (CH) in the same dosage. Meanwhile, the functions of AM were changed. The levels of IgG, immunocomplex (IC) and histamine (HIS) were increased. As to

Water absorption characterization of boron compounds-reinforced PLA/flax fiber sustainable composite.

Biocomposites are widely used in construction, packaging, and automotive applications such as seatbacks, door panels, headliners, and dashboards, as well as industrial composting. The purpose of this study is to look into the effects of three different boron compounds (borax boric, acid combines, zinc borate, and ulexite) on the mechanical and microstructural properties of flax fiber/PLA biocomposites at different water uptake times. 7 different biocomposites were studied for this purpose: control, 3UF, 5UF, 3ZBF, 3BxBcF, 5BxBcF, and 5ZBF. Extrusion was used to create homogenous chopped flax f

Mechanisms of intrusive growth of secondary xylem fibers in flax (Linum usitatissimum L.).

This study explores the mechanisms of intrusive growth in secondary xylem fibers, a process determining their length and future mechanical performance. The flax variety CDC Bethune and the derived from it rdf mutant with reduced fiber length were analyzed to identify factors influencing intrusive growth. The structure and development of secondary xylem, as well as the composition, architecture, and mechanical properties of cell walls in xylem fibers, were studied using microscopy. Hypotheses of intrusive growth initiation were tested using computer modeling. Biomechanical differences between c
