Anomalous contrast as an adaptive violation of the Talbot-Plateau law.

PURPOSE: To better understand anomalous contrast mechanisms that allow flicker-fused stimuli to be visible even when they provide the same physical contrast as background. METHOD: Stimulus flicker was used to elicit differential activation of ON and OFF retinal channels at frequencies above the flicker-fusion threshold. Providing balanced light energy to ON and OFF channels will normally cause the stimulus to vanish into the background. RESULTS: We used ultrabrief bright pulses, combined with ultralong dark pulses, to elicit "anomalous contrast" that rendered the stimulus visible, even thoug

Standardization of the Tübingen flicker test.

In the Tübingen flicker test, the subjective brightness of a steady field is adjusted to that of a flickering test field at 50-0 Hz. This test has proven itself as a valuable and highly specific method in the diagnosis of optic neuritis (ON). This paper reports on the development of new judgement criteria and their standardization, based on a new cohort of 527 eyes, 138 of them with florid ON. After improving the conditions of examination and evaluation the optimal criteria for the definition of a pathological result were determined in an explorative manner that is described in detail. Various stages of optic neuritis assessed by subjective brightness of flicker.

In the Aulhorn flicker test, the subjective brightness of a steady field is matched to that of a flickering field at 50 to 0 Hz. The test gives pathologic values only for active optic neuritis (ON) and gives normal results for normal eyes and eyes with subsided ON and other diagnoses, with a specificity of 98% and a sensitivity of 85.5%. Characteristic variations of the curves of subjective brightness during the course of ON allow a subtle assessment of five different disease stages, and there is a clear distinction between various disease patterns, ie, acute, chronic, recurrent, diminishing,

Acute and subacute actions on human performance and interactions with diazepam of temelastine (SK&F93944) and diphenhydramine.

Thirteen healthy subjects participated in a combined acute and subacute double-blind, cross-over trial of two H1-antihistamines diphenhydramine (DPH) and temelastine (SKF) against placebo. The doses were DPH 50 mg b.d. and SKF 100 mg b.d. Objective (digit symbol substitution, flicker fusion, Maddox wing, attention, tracking, choice reaction) and subjective (visual analogue scales, side-effects on questionnaire) tests were done on Days 1, 4 and 5, on each occasion before drug intake and after 90 min and 3 h. On Day 1 DPH caused clear sedation of unpleasant character and impaired flicker fusion,

Behavioral effects of 0 and 0.05% blood alcohol in male volunteers.

Five behavioral tests were evaluated to determine their sensitivity to the subtle central nervous system (CNS) depressant effects produced by ingestion of ethanol. Twenty-one adult male volunteers received 0 and 1.4 ml 100 proof vodka/kg body weight according to a "double-blind" crossover design. Behavioral tests were conducted between 15 and 65 minutes after ethanol ingestion, when blood alcohol concentrations (BAC's) were between 0.05 and 0.06%. Tests evaluated were Archimedes spiral, digit span memory, critical flicker fusion, stabilometry and tachistoscope. Multivariate analysis of varianc

Quantitative correlation of hyperventilation with flicker sensitivity.

PURPOSE: The relationship between hyperventilation and the associated increase in flicker sensitivity is poorly defined but may be relevant to display viewing. This exploratory study investigates the potential for quantifying the relationship between the severity of hypocapnia and critical flicker frequency (CFF). METHOD: Repeated ascending (fusion) and descending (flicker) measurements were made while breathing normally (normocapnia), and at four levels of progressive, mild to moderate hypocapnia that were induced by voluntary hyperventilation and controlled using continuous respiratory mass

The effects of D- and L-fenfluramine (and their interactions with D-amphetamine) on psychomotor function and mood.

This study reports the results on psychomotor functioning of D- and L-fenfluramine alone, and in combination with D-amphetamine, in a placebo-controlled trial on 12 normal male volunteers, in order to investigate their CNS activity in humans. The major findings were that D-amphetamine increased alertness, L-fenfluramine increased unhappiness whilst D-fenfluramine decreased hunger and increased the critical flicker fusion threshold. D-Amphetamine in combination with D-fenfluramine increased the critical flicker fusion threshold and in combination with L-fenfluramine the alerting action was dimi

The diagnostic value of automated flicker threshold perimetry.

Automated perimetry techniques have advanced from the standard white-on-white threshold perimetry to a myriad of perimetric models. These models include motion detection, frequency-doubling contrast sensitivity, and spatial contrast sensitivity perimetry. The research findings for the more popular of the automated perimetry models, in particular those of blue-on-yellow and critical fusion frequency perimetry, are discussed and compared with findings for flicker threshold perimetry. Flicker threshold perimetry demonstrates resistance to such factors as test variability and retinal image blur an

Automated flicker perimetry in glaucoma using Octopus 311: a comparative study with the Humphrey Matrix.

PURPOSE: We evaluated the clinical usefulness of flicker perimetry in glaucoma and glaucoma suspect patients using the new Octopus 311 automated perimeter. METHODS: A total of 52 eyes of 52 glaucoma patients, 26 eyes of 26 glaucoma suspect patients and 61 eyes of 61 normal subjects were examined using standard automated perimetry (SAP), flicker perimetry and frequency doubling technology (FDT) perimetry. Flicker perimetry was performed using the Octopus 311 and its remote software package. Suprathreshold four-zone probability strategy was used to classify the critical fusion frequency probabi

A reinterpretation of critical flicker-frequency (CFF) data reveals key details about light adaptation and normal and abnormal visual processing.

Our ability to see flicker has an upper frequency limit above which flicker is invisible, known as the "critical flicker frequency" (CFF), that typically grows with light intensity (I). The relation between CFF and I, the focus of nearly 200 years of research, is roughly logarithmic, i.e., CFF ∝ log(I)-a relation called the Ferry-Porter law. However, why this law should occur, and how it relates to the underlying physiology, have never been adequately explained. Over the past two decades we have measured CFF in normal observers and in patients with retinal gene defects. Here, we reanalyse and

Modulation transfer function and critical flicker frequency in high-myopia patients.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Critical flicker frequency (CFF) decreases due to optic nerve and retinal damage in patients with optic neuritis or glaucoma. Because retinal degeneration is also found in high myopia, we investigated whether the modulation transfer function (MTF) and CFF are altered in patients with high myopia. METHODS: Forty-six patients with high myopia (< -8 diopters, D) were recruited from our outpatient department. The control group comprised 21 young volunteers with myopia of 0 to -2 D. The myopic and control groups were similar in terms of age and sex. RESULTS: At all frequen

Psychomotor skills related to driving after intramuscular administration of diazepam and meperidine.

Psychomotor skills related to driving and the ability to discriminate the fusion of flickering light were measured in a double-blind cross-over fashion in 11 healthy volunteers before, and 1, 3, 5, and 7 hours after, intramuscular injection of saline solution, 10 mg diazepam, or 75 mg meperidine. The late effects of meperidine were tested in five other subjects 12 and 24 hours after the injection. The effects of diazepam were the most harmful to coordinative and reactive skills, which were significantly impaired for as long as 5 hours. Meperidine impaired reactive skills for as long as 3 hours

Physiological deficits in the visual system of mice infected with Semliki Forest virus and their correlation with those seen in patients with demyelinating disease.

Electrophysiological recordings were made from the superior colliculus of mice infected with Semliki Forest virus (SFV) which produced patchy demyelination in many different locations within the central nervous system including the optic nerve. Over a wide range of light intensities, the visual latencies of both single cell and field potential responses from the superior colliculi of infected mice were longer than those of the corresponding control mice, and there was a greater interocular difference in visual latency in the infected mice than in control mice. In addition, the collicular neuro

[Electroencephalographic changes in response to the equilibrium test and rhythmic light flashes].

Reliable diagnosis of CNS noise resistance is very important in the selection of operators, pilots and cosmonauts. This dictated a study the purpose of which was to investigate neocortex biopotentials of 74 test subjects during equilibrium tests in the presence or absence of 12 Hz light flashes. Electrocardiographic and stabilographic recordings were taken from 6 sites of the left neocortex during equilibrium tests (standing on toes) and during light stimulation. EEGs were processed through correlation-spectral analysis by means of Electronika-60 and EC-1035 computers. During light stimulation

Temporal light modulation from LED lighting and seizure risk: A focused review of visible flicker, invisible modulation, and evidence gaps.

Critically assess whether light emitting diode (LED) lighting temporal light modulation (TLM) is linked to seizure risk while distinguishing established evidence on visible flicker in photosensitive epilepsy from weaker evidence on prolonged exposure to invisible or supra-critical flicker fusion (CFF) modulation. The review also lists desired data: modulation depth at 100/120 Hz, waveform and driver parameters, neurological symptoms, and ethically possible seizure-incidence observations under measured lighting. The narrative focused review used a structured search of recent literature and targ

[Comparison of the Aulhorn flicker test with visual evoked potentials in the diagnosis of optic neuritis].

The Aulhorn flicker test and visual evoked cortical potentials (VEP) are of great value for the diagnosis of optic neuritis (ON). In the present study, the two methods were compared for the first time within the same group of patients. The study comprised 405 eyes (175 suffering from active or subsided ON). The results were evaluated with a double-blind procedure. With the flicker test, the subjective brightness of flickering light is determined as a function of the flicker frequency. This test gives pathological results only in active ON and normalizes when the active phase is over. The test

Horizontal fusional responses to stimuli containing artificial scotomas.

Horizontal fusional responses were studied with stimuli containing binocular or monocular, artificial, stabilized, scotomas. Binocular scotomas of 5-deg, 10-deg, and 15-deg diameters were utilized. The fusional responses to scotomatic stimuli were compared with full-field stimulus responses. All responses contained significant motor and nonmotor (sensory) components. Overall motor compensation to stimuli with 10-deg and 15-deg scotomas was reduced, while the overall motor compensation to stimuli with 5-deg scotomas was not. With full-field stimuli and with stimuli containing binocular scotomas
