Pigeons make slow, divergent eye movements during flight and large, convergent eye movements when landing.

As animals move through the world, images of surfaces and edges in the environment move across the retina, a visual signal known as optic flow.1 Optic flow is beneficial for several processes, perhaps most notably navigation,2 but it poses a conundrum. When faced with optic flow, the optomotor body, head, and eye movements reflexively minimize optic flow to maintain a stable retinal image.3 This retinal image stabilization is essential for normal visual function.4,5 How then can an animal move through the world yet maintain a stable retinal image? Birds are known for their remarkable head stab

When Silence Breaks: The Influence of Pure Tones and White Noises on Conditioned Flight Responses.

BACKGROUND: The flight response is part of the repertoire of adaptive behavioral responses all animals possess and use to face threats coming from their environment. Compared to the other responses, flight requires a high degree of physical effort and is thought to be related to those active coping strategies that can be observed in several psychopathological conditions, including anxiety and depressive disorders. In recent years, a new protocol of auditory fear conditioning has been shown to induce a learned flight response in mice, based on a conditioned stimulus that includes pure tones and

Central hemodynamics in a baboon model during microgravity induced by parabolic flight.

We developed a chronically instrumented nonhuman primate model (baboon) to evaluate the central cardiovascular responses to transient microgravity induced by parabolic flight. Instrumentation provided simultaneous recording of high fidelity (Ao) and pulmonary artery (PA) pressures, right and left ventricular and atrial pressures, Ao and PA blood flow velocities and vessel dimensions, ECG and pleural pressures. Four daily flights in 1991 and five in 1992 were flown with forty parabola per flight. Animals flown in 1991 were not controlled for volume status. Animals flown in 1992 were studied in

The effects of cosmic particle radiation on pocket mice aboard Apollo XVII: II. Characteristics and tolerances of the pocket mouse and incidence of disease.

Pocket mice are facultative homoiotherms with the ability to drop their metabolic rate dramatically while at rest or in response to environmental stresses. Under these conditions, they characteristically enter a state of prolonged torpor. These animals require no drinking water and they can live in darkness for many months without apparent ill effect. They tolerate a wide range of ambient temperature, ralative humidity, and oxygen pressure and have survied without food for a mean of 14 d at an ambient temperature of 20 degrees C (68 degrees F). Studies carried out on the pocket mouse colony us

Changes of hormones regulating electrolyte metabolism after space flight and hypokinesia.

The changes of hormones in plasma involved in the body fluid regulation were studied in human subjects during and after space flights in relation to redistribution of body fluids in the state of weightlessness. Since hypokinesia was used as a model for simulation of some effects of the stay in microgravity the plasma hormone levels in rats exposed to hypokinesia were also investigated. Plasma aldosterone values showed great individual variations during the first inflight days, the increased levels were observed with prolongation of space flights. The important elevation was found in the recove

Reconstruction of Flight Parameters of a Bat for Flapping Robots.

The flight of bats is comparatively less documented and understood than birds and insects and may provide novel inspiration for the design of flapping flight robots. This study captured the natural flight of short-nosed fruit bats (Cynopterus sphinx) by an optical motion capture system, "OptiTrack", with pasted markers on the wings and body to reconstruct the flight parameters. Due to the self-occlusion at some moments, points on the membrane wings cannot be captured by any cameras. To draw a smooth trajectory, it is desired to reconstruct all missing data. Therefore, an algorithm is proposed

Effects of space flight on Xenopus laevis larval development.

Fifty-three fertilized Xenopus laevis embryos at early tail bud stage were launched into orbit aboard a Biocosmos satellite and remained in microgravity for 11.5 days. During this period, the embryos hatched and continued to develop as free-living larvae. Forty-eight individuals survived the mission. Upon recovery these tadpoles had smaller heads/bodies and proportionately longer tails than ground controls. Almost all the flight animals had caudal lordosis and consequently swam in backward somersaults. Compared to ground-based controls, their notochords were significantly larger in cross-secti

Spaceflight Induces Strength Decline in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Background: Understanding and countering the well-established negative health consequences of spaceflight remains a primary challenge preventing safe deep space exploration. Targeted/personalized therapeutics are at the forefront of space medicine strategies, and cross-species molecular signatures now define the 'typical' spaceflight response. However, a lack of direct genotype-phenotype associations currently limits the robustness and, therefore, the therapeutic utility of putative mechanisms underpinning pathological changes in flight. Methods: We employed the worm Caenorhabditis elegans as

Forelimb feathering, soft tissues, and skeleton of the flying dromaeosaurid Microraptor.

BACKGROUND: Microraptor is an essential animal for understanding the evolution of flight in birds and their closest relatives. Recent studies have uncovered evidence of its powered flight potential and details of its diet and ecology. However, we are still missing a thorough description of the anatomy of Microraptor connecting feathers, soft tissues, and osteology together. Here we focus on the forelimbs of ten new Microraptor specimens from the Shandong Tianyu Museum of Nature studied under Laser-Stimulated Fluorescence. We compared our results with extensively studied existing specimens (e.g

Nightjars trade off cruising speed efficiency for hovering capabilities and link upstroke thrust production with restricted wing folding.

The European nightjar (Caprimulgus europaeus) is a long-distance migrant that also uses slow, hovering, flight as part of its feeding ecology. This reflects complex tradeoffs in aerodynamic mechanisms and makes studies of their flight performance, in relation to their wing shape, particularly interesting. Here we reveal, using wake visualization and aerodynamic measurements of nightjars flying in a wind tunnel, a unique double tip vortex phenomenon at cruising speeds. This correlates with reduced span efficiency at these flight speeds, suggesting relatively high costs of generating lift. Our i

Effects of Flight Restraint and Housing Conditions on Feather Corticosterone in White Storks Under Human Care.

Flight is part of the natural behaviours of most bird species, and as a consequence, flight restraint in zoos, even for those species that are primarily ground-dwelling, encounters increasing animal welfare concerns. While previous studies on greater flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) and white pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) have found no significant effects of flight restraint on welfare, scientific data on other species remains limited. This study investigated the welfare implications of flight restraint in white storks (Ciconia ciconia) by assessing feather corticosterone concentrations (C

Effects of restraint and cabin environment on skin temperature, sleep-wake, feeding and drinking circadian rhythms in Macaca mulatta during spacelab flight simulation.

Exposure to a weightless environment such as in spaceflight, leads to a number of physiological responses to assure the survival of an organism in this new environment. However, the real effect of microgravity itself has not been clearly established yet. Considering the environmental and operational characteristics of a spaceflight, and as it has been shown in previous flights, the use of animals, and more particularly the non-human primates, takes on importance in understanding the mechanisms and factors involved in the adaptation to changes in gravitational loading. The SLS-3 flight of the A

Alterations of body temperature, feeding, drinking, and sleep-wake circadian rhythms in Rhesus monkey during a 19 day Spacelab flight simulation.

Previous experiments performed with mammals during spaceflight suggest that microgravity may affect the circadian timekeeping system. However, this system could also be influenced by other factors related to the spaceflight environment, such as the animal compartment. The Rhesus project is a joint program of C.N.E.S. and N.A.S.A in which investigators in various disciplines of physiology will take advantage of flights of the Spacelab to study problems that interest them, using the Rhesus monkey as animal model. The technical characteristics of the Rhesus Research Facility in the Spacelab have

Quantitative autoradiographic analysis of muscarinic cholinergic and GABAA (benzodiazepine) receptors in the forebrain of rats flown on the Soviet Biosatellite COSMOS 2044.

The quantitative autoradiographic analysis of muscarinic cholinergic and GABAA (benzodiazepine) receptors was performed on selected regions of the cerebral cortex and striatum of rats flown in the Soviet Biosatellite COSMOS 2044. An age- and strain-matched synchronous ground-based control group was employed for comparison. Muscarinic cholinergic receptor density was found to be significantly lower in the striatum of the flight animals as compared with that in the synchronous control group. No significant differences between flight and synchronous control groups were found in the other regions

Effects of cannabis resin on social behaviour in the laboratory mouse.

The effects of several dose levels of cannabis have been studied by an ethiological analysis of encounters between male mice injected with the drug and partners injected with Tween-saline. The duration of immobility was directly related to the logarithm of the dose of cannabis given. The ratio of flight in the treated animals to aggression in those mice with which they were paired showed a progressive increase as the dose of cannabis was raised from 4-50 mg/kg. A straight line relationship was found to exist between the logarithm of flight/aggression and logarithm of the dose of cannabis admin

Changes in the central nervous system during long-duration space flight: implications for neuro-imaging.

The purpose of this paper is to review the potential functional and morphological effects of long duration space flight on the human central nervous system (CNS) and how current neuroimaging techniques may be utilized to study these effects. It must be determined if there will be any detrimental changes to the CNS from long term exposure to the space environment if human beings are to plan interplanetary missions or establish permanent space habitats. Research to date has focused primarily on the short term changes in the CNS as the result of space flight. The space environment has many factor

Control and regulatory mechanisms associated with thermogenesis in flying insects and birds.

Most insects and birds are able to fly. The chitin made exoskeleton of insects poses them several constraints, and this is one the reasons they are in general small sized animals. On the other hand, because birds possess an endoskeleton made of bones they may grow much larger when compared to insects. The two taxa are quite different with regards to their general "design" platform, in particular with respect to their respiratory and circulatory systems. However, because they fly, they may share in common several traits, namely those associated with the control and regulatory mechanisms governi

Field and en route resuscitative endovascular occlusion of the aorta: A feasible military reality?

BACKGROUND: Severe noncompressible torso hemorrhage remains a leading cause of potentially preventable death in modern military conflicts. Resuscitative endovascular occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) has demonstrated potential as an effective adjunct to the treatment of noncompressible torso hemorrhage in the civilian early hospital and even prehospital settings-but the application of this technology for military prehospital use has not been well described. We aimed to assess the feasibility of both field and en route prehospital REBOA in the military exercise setting, simulating a modern armed c

Hawkmoths regulate flight torques with their abdomen for yaw control.

Many animals use body parts such as tails to stabilize posture while moving at high speed. In flying insects, leg or abdominal inertia can influence flight posture. In the hawkmoth Manduca sexta, the abdomen contributes ∼50% of the total body weight and it can therefore serve to inertially redirect flight forces. How do torques generated by the wings and abdomen interact for flight control? We studied the yaw optomotor response of M. sexta by using a torque sensor attached to their thorax. In response to yaw visual motion, the abdomen moved antiphase with the stimulus, head and total torque. B

Fine-Scale Movement Data Reveal Primarily Surface Foraging and Nocturnal Flight Activity in the Endangered Bermuda Petrel.

Foraging behaviour plays a fundamental role in animal fitness and population dynamics., particularly for central-place foragers like breeding seabirds. Among Procellariiform seabirds, petrels exhibit a wide range of foraging strategies finely tuned to the patchy and unpredictable distribution of resources. The extent and remote nature of their foraging grounds makes direct observation of foraging behaviour impractical, thereby requiring the use of remote tracking technologies. We deployed miniaturised multi-sensor biologgers and collected fine scale movement data to investigate the at-sea beha
