Dip-angle influence on areal DNAPL recovery by co-solvent flooding with and without pre-flooding.

A two-dimensional (2D) laboratory model was used to study effects of gravity on areal recovery of a representative dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) contaminant by an alcohol pre-flood and co-solvent flood in dipping aquifers. Recent studies have demonstrated that injection of alcohol and co-solvent solutions can be used to reduce in-situ the density of DNAPL globules and displace the contaminant from the source zone. However, contact with aqueous alcohol reduces interfacial tension and causes DNAPL swelling, thus facilitating risk of uncontrolled downward DNAPL migration. The 2D laborato

Coastal flooding at predictable hours.

Flooding is typically perceived as a sudden and unpredictable hazard. Here, we show that recurrent flooding can occur at highly predictable times in tidally dominated coastal systems. This predictability stems from phase-locking of tidal constituents and constituent pairs with the solar day, causing peak tides to recur at consistent local times set by regional tidal propagation. Using tide-gauge records from the United States and the United Kingdom, we quantify the intraday timing of coastal flood events and show strong clustering at specific hours, particularly where semidiurnal or mixed tide

[Flood disasters and schistosomiasis control].

Currently, the endemic situation of schistosomiasis has dropped to the lowest level in China; however, there are still factors affecting the transmission of schistosomiasis. Flood disasters may pose a great impact on the transmission of schistosomiasis and even affect the progress of schistosomiasis control and the consolidation of schistosomiasis control achievements. In 2020, major flood disasters occur across China. This paper analyzes the current status of schistosomiasis and the impact of flood disasters on the transmission of schistosomiasis in China, and systematically describes the ass

[Is there such a thing as post-flood syndrome?].

In 1953, the South-Western parts of The Netherlands (particularly the province of Zeeland) were flooded. At the time, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) did not yet exist as a formal diagnosis. Research following more recent natural disasters has identified risk factors for the development of PTSD. These risk factors are applied as guidance for research into the circumstances around the 1953 floods. Risk factors such as lower socioeconomic status, pre-existence of psychiatric symptoms and limited support from the government were certainly present. Furthermore, some affected people were evacu

Health Risks of Flood Disasters.

Floods are the most common natural disaster occurring worldwide, with their impact expected to grow in the future due to the effects of climate change and population shift. Floodwaters pose immediate dangers to human health, but also long-term effects resulting from displacement and worsened living conditions. This review examines the health impact of flood disasters, including skin and soft-tissue infections, gastroenteritis, and zoonotic infections such as leptospirosis, and the impact on noncommunicable diseases and health infrastructure. Further work in the development of cost-efficient pr

Multidimensional factors shaping older persons' resilience to floods in Madura Island.

UNLABELLED: This study examines the multidimensional factors that influence the resilience of older persons in responding to and recovering from flood hazard in the Madura Island, Indonesia. Using Spearman correlation analysis and Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the study evaluates key demographic, health, risk perception, institutional and attitudinal characteristics that shape disaster resilience. A structured survey was conducted with 399 older persons across four districts: Bangkalan, Sampang, Pamekasan and Sumenep. The findings indicate that age, health status, prior flood experience,

Neonatal and child health crises due to recent floods in Pakistan.

Neonates and children are more vulnerable to the negative impact of flood-related changes and may have a variety of detrimental negative impacts on their health. They are more prone to get various infectious diseases. They are also more vulnerable to malnutrition during floods. Flooding limits access to clean water as sewage overflows and contaminates nearby water sources. The polluted setting in the flood-affected area makes it difficult to ensure the hygiene of feeding equipment used to prepare infant formula. Breastfeeding may also become less effective due to the lack of privacy for women

A Large Leptospirosis Outbreak following Successive Severe Floods in Fiji, 2012.

Severe flooding has been linked to outbreaks of leptospirosis. Two sequential extreme flood events in Western Fiji caused the largest outbreak of leptospirosis recorded in the South Pacific, with 1,217 total suspected cases, of which 314 were probable and confirmed. Most (83%) cases occurred within 6 weeks of the flood events, displaying a biphasic epidemic curve associated with the floods. Given the temporal proximity of cases to flooding events, most of the transmission appeared to occur during or immediately after the floods; therefore, prevention of exposure to contaminated environments is

The Incidence of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder After Floods: A Meta-Analysis.

This study analyzes the incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among flood victims, between different flood intensities, and between different time points after a flood. A search of several electronic literature databases was conducted to collect data on the incidence of PTSD after a flood. Loney criteria for research quality were used to evaluate the quality of selected search results. The combined incidence of PTSD was estimated using the Freeman-Tukey double arcsine transformation method. Subgroup analyses were conducted on different trauma intensities and different time points a

Genomic epidemiology of Vibrio cholerae O1 associated with floods, Pakistan, 2010.

In August 2010, Pakistan experienced major floods and a subsequent cholera epidemic. To clarify the population dynamics and transmission of Vibrio cholerae in Pakistan, we sequenced the genomes of all V. cholerae O1 El Tor isolates and compared the sequences to a global collection of 146 V. cholerae strains. Within the global phylogeny, all isolates from Pakistan formed 2 new subclades (PSC-1 and PSC-2), lying in the third transmission wave of the seventh-pandemic lineage that could be distinguished by signature deletions and their antimicrobial susceptibilities. Geographically, PSC-1 isolates

A dynamic urban flood risk prediction framework for real-time flood risk early warning.

Short-term urban flood early warning requires not only rapid prediction of future inundation depth fields, but also timely identification of high-risk areas. To address the high computational cost of high-resolution two-dimensional hydrodynamic models and their limited ability to support real-time risk updating, this study proposes a History-Driven Source-Node Multi-Step Depth Prediction Network (HDMP-Net). The model formulates urban flood prediction as a heterogeneous mapping from overflow source terms to surface-grid responses. It integrates historical surface water depths, dynamic rainfall-

Retention portfolios buffer climate impacts on floods, droughts, and water quality.

Climate change is intensifying floods, droughts, and nutrient export from agricultural landscapes, threatening water security under increasingly non-stationary hydroclimatic conditions. Although landscape-scale water-retention measures are widely promoted as nature-based solutions, their combined effectiveness under future climates remains poorly constrained, particularly across contrasting hydroclimatic settings. Here, we evaluate the capacity of distributed retention portfolios to buffer climate-driven hydrologic and water-quality change using a harmonized, field-explicit Soil and Water Asse

Underestimated agricultural losses due to flooding.

Flooding poses a growing threat to global food security in a warming climate, yet a critical gap remains in quantifying flood-induced agricultural losses, hindering the design of effective adaptations to potential food crises. Here, we present a methodological framework for projecting crop losses from flooding, using a flooding stress algorithm to refine yield simulations from existing crop models. This approach ensures that simulated yield reductions for maize, soybean, and wheat align with observations in the United States and demonstrates strong agreement between estimated and reported floo

Impacts of flooding on agricultural soil microbiome.

As a result of climate change, increased flooding events have been recorded across the globe. The role of soil microbiomes in soil health and fertility is well recognized, as these microbial communities drive essential processes such as nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and plant health. The composition and function of these communities can be highly sensitive to environmental changes. The aim of this study is to identify the impacts of flooding on soil microbiome composition and diversity. Paired flooded and non-flooded agricultural soils were collected from Germany, Ireland, an

Flooding stress resilience and crop improvement.

Promoting the long-term viability of agriculture in the face of climate change has spurred a rise in alternative approaches to enhance crop resilience. Universally, the significant risk of crop yield reduction in cereal crops due to flooding has become a prominent concern, and this threat is anticipated to intensify in various regions worldwide due to future climatic anomalies. Flooding stress induces oxygen (O2) deficiency within the plant system, serving as a major restriction for plant growth during submerged and waterlogged environments. Plants experience fluctuating levels of O2 contents,
