Fluoroscopy in measurement of femoral neck anteversion.

Fluoroscopy for determination of femoral neck anteversion was evaluated in 24 patients (48 hips) aged 5 to 15 years. The measurements of the anteversion angle of the femoral neck obtained by the fluoroscopic method were compared with those determined by the biplanar method of Dunlap/Rippstein. It is concluded that fluoroscopy incorporates errors to such a degree that the method is not reliable for clinical work.

Hypodermic needle fixation without fluoroscopy versus k-wire fixation with fluoroscopy for distal phalangeal fractures: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Distal phalanx fractures are frequently encountered in our daily practice. They are often caused by crush injuries and are the most frequent work-related hand fractures. Different types of fixation have been proposed for displaced fractures. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed on two fixation types. Twenty-four distal phalanx fractures were treated with k-wire fixation with fluoroscopic control in a main operating room setting. Twenty-five distal phalanx fractures were treated with hypodermic needle fixation without fluoroscopic control in an emergency treatment room sett

Radiation safety in fluoroscopy for neuraxial injections.

Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) perform epidural steroid injections for chronic back and extremity pain. Placing epidural needles using fluoroscopy and confirming the needle placement by epidurogram has been suggested as a means to increase the efficacy of epidural injections while decreasing complications. Because of the risk of radiation injury to patients and staff when using fluoroscopy, the purpose of this article is to review the concepts of fluoroscopy and radiation safety for CRNAs. Following a literature search using keywords such as fluoroscopy, radiation injury, and

Safety Pericardiocentesis with Fluoroscopy Following Cardiac Surgery.

PURPOSE: In the treatment of the postsurgical pericardial effusions via pericardiocentesis, determination of the puncture site might be difficult. Contrast echocardiography may not be efficient due to surgical artefacts and pulmonary problems and therefore may lead to inaccurate evaluation. Alternative imaging methods might be helpful to perform the pericardiocentesis with decreased complications. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the patients who had undergone pericardiocentesis in our department from January 2008 through April 2018. The procedure was performed in slightly semi-seated pos

Cardiac Interventions in Pregnant Patients without Fluoroscopy.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac interventions with fluoroscopy during pregnancy carry significant risks for the fetus. This report reviews three pregnant patients: two of them requiring pacemaker implantation and one underwent diagnostic cardiac catheterization without fluoroscopy. METHODS: The cases were performed using EnSite system (St. Jude Medical Inc., MN, USA) guidance. The necessary cardiac structure geometries were reconstructed with a deflectable quadripolar electrophysiology catheter without fluoroscopy. In two cases, pacemaker leads were connected to the EnSite system for navigation and fix

Insertion of tunneled hemodialysis catheters without fluoroscopy.

BACKGROUND: The tunneled cuffed catheter (TCC) is used as a bridge access for hemodialysis. Few prospective studies have been designed to evaluate conversion from non-tunneled to TCC without the use of fluoroscopy when performed by nephrologists. METHODS: We performed an observational prospective cohort in incident patients receiving hemodialysis through a non-tunneled right jugular vein catheter. RESULTS: 130 procedures were performed in 122 patients (51+/-18 years). The success rate was 100%. There was a total of 26,546 catheter days. Ninety-one of the 130 catheters were removed during the

Gastrointestinal fluoroscopy: what are we still doing?

OBJECTIVE: We used Medicare data to quantify trends in gastrointestinal fluoroscopy volume. CONCLUSION: Although overall gastrointestinal fluoroscopy procedures continue to decline, the fall is not uniform. Nationwide Medicare data from 2001 to 2006 reveal that the volumes of barium enema and upper gastrointestinal studies suffered a steep drop, but the numbers of esophagograms and swallowing studies actually increased. These numbers highlight the challenge facing gastrointestinal fluoroscopy training and offer guidance for modifying curricula.

Cervical spine instability: clearance using dynamic fluoroscopy.

Cle aring the cervical spine in a multiply injured trauma patient is a dilemma because clinical examination for ligamentous instability cannot be performed, and the standard cervical spine series can miss isolated ligamentous injury. Static flexion/extension views are unsafe, as the obtunded patient has no protective reflexes and cannot complain of pain during the exam. This results in a need for prolonged spinal immobilization and its attendant complications. Dynamic fluoroscopy may be useful in the detection of otherwise occult injuries. We performed a prospective study of a cervical spine cl

Transbronchial needle aspiration: guidance with CT fluoroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Bronchoscopy with transbronchial needle aspiration (TBNA) is valuable to diagnose lesions in the mediastinum and lung, but conventional fluoroscopic guidance may be suboptimal. We describe the use of CT fluoroscopy to provide real-time, transaxial TBNA localization, thus facilitating biopsy. METHODS: Patients were selected because of prior unsuccessful bronchoscopy or anticipated difficulty owing to small size or inaccessibility of the lesion. CT fluoroscopy consists of a spiral CT scanner adapted using a rapid-reconstruction algorithm and hardware that permits real-time in-room i

Fluoroscopy. A valuable ally during difficult colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND: This study determines the pattern of fluoroscopy use during colonoscopy among a group of gastroenterologists and colon and rectal surgeons who have it readily available for each patient. METHODS: One thousand three hundred fifty-seven consecutive patients undergoing colonoscopic examination were studied over a 16-month period. RESULTS: Fluoroscopy was used during 34% of colonoscopic examinations. The frequency of fluoroscopy use was significantly higher for women (41% vs 28%, p < 0.001). Fluoroscopy was most commonly used to precisely locate the colonoscope tip (45%) or during ma

Comparative analysis of adult distal radius fracture reduction in the emergency room: fluoroscopy-guided vs. non-fluoroscopy-guided approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures are a common injury, typically treated with closed reduction and plaster casting. Fluoroscopy is frequently used during the reduction process to ensure accurate alignment. However, the necessity of fluoroscopy in achieving optimal radiographic outcomes remains uncertain. While fluoroscopy is considered the gold standard in many settings, concerns about radiation exposure and the cost of its routine use, especially in resource-limited environments, have sparked interest in non-fluoroscopy-guided methods. RESEARCH OBJECTIVES: The primary objective of this s

Three-step fluoroscopy-guided percutaneous lumbar pedicle screw placement: a pilot study on technical feasibility, safety, and fluoroscopy reduction.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery has gained widespread popularity in clinical practice. Among spinal surgeries, percutaneous pedicle screw placement (PPS) is one of the most widely performed procedures. However, it necessitates high-frequency fluoroscopic guidance to ensure accuracy, resulting in substantial radiation exposure. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a technique that is fast, safe, and minimizes radiation exposure. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe a novel three-step fluoroscopy-guided technique for PPS and preliminarily evaluate the technical feasibility, procedural efficien

Comparative analysis of isocentric 3-dimensional C-arm fluoroscopy and biplanar fluoroscopy for anterior screw fixation in odontoid fractures.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective clinical study. OBJECTIVE: To compare long-term radiographic and clinical outcomes of patients undergoing anterior odontoid screw placement using traditional biplanar fluoroscopy or isocentric 3-dimensional C-arm (iso-C) fluoroscopy-assisted techniques. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Anterior screw fixation of odontoid fractures preserves motion at the C1-C2 joint, but accurate screw positioning is essential for successful outcomes. Biplanar fluoroscopy image guidance is most often used; however, iso-C imaging improves the ease and accuracy of screw placement with le

Zero- or minimal-fluoroscopy vs conventional fluoroscopy in catheter ablation of supraventricular tachycardias: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Catheter ablation is the treatment of choice for supraventricular tachycardias. Conventional fluoroscopy (CF) enables real-time guidance but exposes patients and staff to ionizing radiation. Zero- (ZF) or minimal-fluoroscopy (MF) approaches are primarily enabled by electroanatomic mapping, with adjunctive tools such as intracardiac echocardiography used selectively when clinically indicated, to reduce radiation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of ZF/MF ablation compared with CF for supraventricular tachycardias. METHODS: We performed a systematic r
