We and others have postulated that modifications to epidemiological methods and tools could improve understanding of childhood cancer aetiology. We describe features of paediatric cancer that influence study design and data collection strategies, and examine determinants of the reproducibility and accuracy of mothers' responses to questionnaires, which are the primary source of risk factor information. Two focus group sessions with mothers of children with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and two with mothers of children with brain tumours were conducted to explore: the optimal time of day,

This study explores African American adolescents' perceptions about recruitment and retention strategies for intervention studies. Fifteen African American adolescents, ages 13 and 17 years, participated in this focus group study. Adolescents attended one of three groups which varied by size, gender, and the type of chronic condition: well adolescents (n = 7), adolescents with sickle cell disease (n = 5), and adolescents with diabetes (n = 3). Each group of adolescents participated in two group sessions. Content analyses of the two major categories in the study, recruitment and retention, yiel

Heterosexism is a social force that affects all people, because heterosexism infuses social institutions and sustains heteronormativity, which dictates social roles for all people regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The field of critical heterosexualities has begun to explore how straight people experience costs from heterosexism and heteronormativity. However, few psychological studies have aimed to examine how straight/heterosexual people are negatively affected by heterosexism. In the present study, we explored lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, a

Focus groups were conducted in 2005-2006 with 25 urban methadone-maintained outpatients to examine beliefs about the role of spirituality in addiction and its appropriateness in formal treatment. Thematic analyses suggested that spirituality and religious practices suffered in complex ways during active addiction, but went "hand in hand" with recovery. Participants agreed that integration of a voluntary spiritual discussion group into formal treatment would be preferable to currently available alternatives. One limitation was that all participants identified as strongly spiritual. Studies of m

Wayne Memorial Hospital uses focus groups to elicit feedback from clients. One group involved 11 women with breast cancer. Aspects of interest included screening and detection, diagnostic evaluation, treatment, life after cancer, and general perceptions of cancer care. The findings revealed that participants felt the community offered high-quality progressive cancer care. Opportunities for improvement along the continuum were identified, including a need for personalized breast self-exam education, consideration of bed placement in the room following breast surgery, and additional support for

Rabbits were infected with group A streptococci type 12 by an aerosol method, that seems to resemble closely the human natural infection, in order to investigate the mechanism of invasion, especially the initial focus of invasion of streptococci. Living streptococci and FITC-labelled streptococci were exposed to several groups of rabbits, which were sacrificed and divided according to the duration after exposure. The specimens of organs were examined by light microscopy, fluorescent microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Histologically, the

"Bombay" and "Para-Bombay" phenotypes are uncommon blood groups with absence or deficiency of H antigen. These individuals possess anti-H antibodies and crossmatching with ABO blood group packed red blood cells (PRBC) becomes incompatible. In this report, we find out alternative strategy (patient blood management) for the management of anemia in Bombay blood group patient. Case: A 49-year-old woman referred to our hospital with severe anemia (Hb = 6 gm/dl). On history patient visited to peripheral hospital with complains of fatigue and weakness. Patient was transfused one unit of group O PRBC

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease involving not only epidermic damages but also psychological distress for patients and their family caregivers. Little is known about the effects of a psychological support for psoriatic patients on their caregivers' well-being. The goal of the present study was to investigate the indirect effects of the participation in a dynamic focus group reserved for psoriatic patients on their caregivers in terms of quality of life. The study involved 52 psoriatic patients and 41 family caregivers. Patients' wellbeing was assessed using the dermatology quality of life i

This paper outlines the way in which a focus group approach was used to involve service users in the possible reconfiguration of follow-up services for breast cancer patients at a North London hospital. The focus group was used to identify the priority issues for users and the development of an objective questionnaire, to survey all current service users. Within the National Health Service (NHS) the concept of user involvement has been embodied in contemporary health policy, and has become an important constituent of current policy direction. This study was the first stage of a larger stakehol

BACKGROUND: The uptake of the combined measles, mumps and rubella immunisation (MMR) in Britain has fallen since 1998, when a link was hypothesised with the development of bowel disorders and childhood autism. Despite reassurances about the safety of MMR, uptake levels remain lower than optimal. We need to understand what influences parents' decisions on whether to accept MMR or not so that health professionals can provide a service responsive to their needs.
AIM: To investigate what influences parents' decisions on whether to accept or refuse the primary MMR immunisation and the impact of th

Few studies have examined the return-to-work process for nurses who are injured at work. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors that facilitate or impede the successful return to work of nurses who have sustained a workplace injury from the perspective of return-to-work coordinators. A qualitative, descriptive study was conducted and 25 return-to-work coordinators from 14 different organizations participated in focus group discussions. The participants were recruited from healthcare settings in metropolitan and rural areas of New South Wales, Australia. These included aged-care,

AIM: This paper shows the differences between the success of three focus groups in promoting group discussion on health promotion and also the detailed effects of individual members with speech and language difficulties in participating.
BACKGROUND: Conducting focus groups with people with learning disabilities can promote their social inclusion.
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that focus groups are an effective method of conducting exploratory research with adults with learning disabilities in the community, however, ability to participate with other members may be a limiting factor. Furthermore,

INTRODUCTION: Multiple medication safety recommendations to reduce preventable medication-related hospitalisations have been introduced in the Netherlands. Still, these hospitalisations remain prevalent. This might be due to suboptimal implementation in clinical practice. Therefore, more insight is needed into barriers and facilitators for the implementation of these medication safety recommendations across healthcare sectors.
AIM: This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators for implementing medication safety recommendations across healthcare sectors from the perspective of various

PURPOSE: Medication is an important component of the management of Parkinson's disease (PD), yet few studies investigate factors that inform medication decision-making from the perspective of those who use these therapies. This qualitative study aimed to better understand the medication experiences and perspectives of people with PD (PwPD).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Thirty-two PwPD recruited from five large movement disorder clinics from five US states participated in 1-hour on-line focus groups in 2022. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data.
RESULTS: Four primary themes (subthemes in p

Nonpharmacological treatments for insomnia in adolescents with depression are lacking. This qualitative study was a thematic analysis of the unique characteristics of and preferences for an insomnia treatment in a group of depressed adolescents. Fourteen adolescents with insomnia (age range = 14-19, mean = 17, SD ± 1.7; 71% female) and depression completed a 90-min focus group. Information was elicited about sleep disruptions, insomnia's impact on mood, and preferences for insomnia treatments. Themes included poor daytime functioning affecting sleep, lack of benefit from sleep medication, and

BACKGROUND: Although many studies have evaluated behavioral mobile health (mHealth) usability in adults, far fewer have examined acceptability among adolescents, particularly regarding sustained engagement for lifestyle and behavior change. Adolescents have distinct developmental needs and design preferences, yet most mHealth tools are adapted from adult models, contributing to low adoption and limited continued use. In adolescent mHealth, understanding acceptability among adolescents, caregivers, and clinicians is essential to ensure interventions are developmentally appropriate and feasible
