Ebola virus RNA detection on fomites in close proximity to confirmed Ebola patients; N'Zerekore, Guinea, 2015.

OBJECTIVE: Health care workers (HCWs) in contact with patients with Ebola virus disease (EVD) are exposed to a risk of viral contamination. Fomites contaminated with the patient's blood or body fluids represents this risk. Our study aims to detect Ebola virus (EBOV) RNA within the high- and low-risk areas of an Ebola treatment unit (ETU) located in inland Guinea during the 2014-2015 West African Ebola epidemics. For samples from patients' immediate vicinity, we aim to seek an association between viral RNA detectability and level of plasma viral load of patients (intermediate to high, or very h

Efficacy of machine laundering to eradicate head lice: recommendations to decontaminate washable clothes, linens, and fomites.

The efficacy of machine laundering to eradicate head lice should be determined. Viable lice and nits were machine laundered using 3 washing programs (with water temperatures of 40 degrees C, 50 degrees C, and 60 degrees C), with and without detergent, and the results were compared with results for control lice and nits. A drying program was also used. Either washing done with a water temperature of at least 50 degrees C or drying is necessary to kill head lice and nits.

Outbreak of norovirus illness in a college summer camp: impact of cleaning on occurrence of norovirus on fomites.

During the summer of 2005 an outbreak of norovirus acute gastroenteritis occurred in a residential college summer camp and was reported to the local health department. The outbreak spread rapidly to several other groups concurrently sharing the same facilities. During the investigation, fomites were sampled at different times in dorm rooms and tested for norovirus. The number of norovirus-positive rooms increased after the first room cleaning, from 40% to 73%. After the initial cleaning, the staff was instructed on proper cleaning and disinfection procedures and provided with disposable disinf

Fomite Persistence of the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus is Affected by Relative Humidity and Storage Temperature.

The environmental resilience of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) enhances its potential for indirect transmission and complicates control efforts. This study evaluated the persistence of PRRSV on polypropylene (PP) and stainless steel (SS). A PRRSV suspension (> 6 log TCID50) was inoculated onto PP and SS coupons (2.2 cm × 2.2 cm) coated with organic soil and allowed to dry for 15 min. Samples were then incubated at 4 °C and 25 °C under 40-45% and 65% relative humidity (RH). Virus recovery and titration were performed on days 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 post-inoculation us

Leveraging virucidal potential of an anti-microbial coating agent to mitigate fomite transmission of respiratory viruses.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, respiratory tract infections have emerged as a significant global threat, yet their impact on public health was previously underappreciated. This study investigated the antiviral efficacy of the nano-coating agent BARRIER90, composed of silicon-quaternary ammonium compound and a naturally derived biopolymer, against three distinct respiratory viruses: Influenza A (H1N1), Adenovirus Type 1, and Enterovirus-Coxsackie B1. BARRIER90 exhibited robust and sustained virucidal activity, persisting up to 90 days post-coating, against the enveloped virus, Influenza

Human papillomavirus DNA in fomites on objects used for the management of patients with genital human papillomavirus infections.

We investigated the possibility that human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA could be present on objects that are used for the management of patients with genital HPV infections. Human papillomavirus DNA was identified by filter hybridization in swabs taken from eight of 16 (50%) of surgical gloves. Similarly, HPV DNA was found in 23 of 62 (37%) and one of 62 (1.6%) of biopsy forceps before and after sterilization in 30% tincture of Savlon for 30 minutes, respectively. Five of 22 (23%) and one of 22 (4.5%) of cryoprobe tips tested positive for HPV DNA before and after cleaning with 90% ethanol solution

Fomites Could Determine Severity of SARS-CoV-2 Outbreaks in Low-Density White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) Populations.

The establishment of a reservoir species for zoonotic diseases is concerning for both animal and human health. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV)-2, the coronavirus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, has been detected in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in the United States. Since its initial detection, various studies have documented circulation and evolution of SARS-CoV-2 in deer, with human cases suspected of spill-back from infectious deer. A priority for mitigating SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks in deer populations is determining the contribution of direct (via a

Evaluation of respiratory virus transmissibility and resilience from fomites: the case of 11 SARS-CoV-2 clinical isolates.

The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) caused a global pandemic, significantly impacting social and economic aspects of society. While belonging to the Coronaviridae family, SARS-CoV-2 exhibited unique characteristics that facilitated its widespread transmission and pathogenicity. This study aimed to investigate the molecular characterization and infection kinetics of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants, focusing on four key virological aspects: viral entry mechanisms, replication dynamics, immune evasion strategies, and surface persistence. We isolated 11 SARS-

Spatiotemporal dynamics and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens recovered from various fomites at a paediatric care facility in Ghana.

Hospital fomites are major reservoirs of nosocomial pathogens, facilitating healthcare-associated infections, particularly in critical units. However, longitudinal studies investigating the persistence of pathogens on hospital surfaces and their antimicrobial resistance (AMR) patterns remain limited. This study examined the spatiotemporal distribution and antimicrobial resistance of bacterial pathogens isolated from fomite surfaces at Princess Marie Louise Children's Hospital (PML), Accra, Ghana. A 12-week longitudinal study (September 4-November 26, 2023) was conducted across four departments

Efficient fabrication of hunting trap-inspired degradable film with enhancing antimicrobial activity and reducing fomite transmission.

The extensive application of medical protective polymers has significantly contributed to preserving human lives and well-being. Due to the widespread use of protective polymer materials and their non-degradable nature, environmental and biological pollution issues are becoming increasingly severe. To address the environmental pollution problems caused by traditional polymer materials, this study proposes an efficient and successive method for the mass production of polylactic acid/graphene oxide (MNPG) films with the hunting trap-inspired pyramidal micro/nanostructure by combining micro-extru

SARS-CoV-2 disease severity and transmission efficiency is increased for airborne compared to fomite exposure in Syrian hamsters.

Transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is driven by contact, fomite, and airborne transmission. The relative contribution of different transmission routes remains subject to debate. Here, we show Syrian hamsters are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection through intranasal, aerosol and fomite exposure. Different routes of exposure present with distinct disease manifestations. Intranasal and aerosol inoculation causes severe respiratory pathology, higher virus loads and increased weight loss. In contrast, fomite exposure leads to milder disease manifestation characterized by an anti-inflammatory immune state

Hand-to-face touching behaviors by sex differences and putative-fomite use: Exploring routes and risks of self-inoculation.

BACKGROUND: The study investigated face-touching behaviors as a potential self-inoculation event, while examining sex differences and the role of handheld objects as possible fomites. Understanding these factors helps identify non-obvious behavioral routes of infection. METHODS: A naturalistic field study observed 114 coffeeshop patrons. Observers recorded each instance of face touching as either T-zone touches (eyes, nose, mouth) or P-zone touches (cheeks, chin, ears), and whether handheld objects (putative fomites) were involved. Welch's t-test, multivariate and logistic regression were use

Spread of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis due to enterovirus-70: effect of air temperature and relative humidity on virus survival on fomites.

Enterovirus 70 (EV-70) has caused at least two pandemics and several major epidemics of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) in the past 18 years, with the largest number of cases occurring in the coastal areas of the tropics. The exact means of its spread are not known, but fomites and hands contaminated by them are the most likely vehicles. We, therefore, tested EV-70 survival under different environmental conditions using stainless steel disks (1 cm diameter). Each disk received 10 microliter of the virus in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS). The disks were held at various temperatures with

Isolation and Host Range of Bacteriophage with Lytic Activity against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Potential Use as a Fomite Decontaminant.

Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is a commensal bacterium and opportunistic pathogen commonly associated with humans and is capable of causing serious disease and death including sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Methicillin-resistant SA (MRSA) isolates are typically resistant to many available antibiotics with the common exception of vancomycin. The presence of vancomycin resistance in some SA isolates combined with the current heavy use of vancomycin to treat MRSA infections indicates that MRSA may achieve broad resistance to vancomycin in the near future. New MRSA treatments are clearly needed.

Eczema vaccinatum resulting from the transmission of vaccinia virus from a smallpox vaccinee: an investigation of potential fomites in the home environment.

On March 3, 2007, a 2-year-old boy was hospitalized with eczema vaccinatum. His two siblings, one with eczema, were subsequently removed from the home. Swabs of household items obtained on March 13th were analyzed for orthopoxvirus DNA signatures with real-time PCR. Virus culture was attempted on positive specimens. Eight of 25 household samples were positive by PCR for orthopoxvirus; of these, three yielded viable vaccinia virus in culture. Both siblings were found to have serologic evidence of orthopoxvirus exposure. These findings have implications for smallpox preparedness, especially in s
