Food environment as a determinant of post-transplant diabetes and regional variation in the United States.

Liver transplant (LT) recipients are at risk of post-transplant diabetes mellitus (PTDM), and the incidence varies by region. We explored the relationship between county-level food environment and PTDM and whether food insecurity mediates regional variation. First-time LT recipients from July 2004 to December 2022 without pre-existing diabetes were identified in the UNOS SRTR database. Data on 3 measures of healthy food access at the county level were obtained: population experiencing food insecurity, low-income population with low access to grocery stores (food deserts), and ratio of unhealth

The impact of county-level food access on the mortality and post-transplant survival among patients with steatotic liver disease.

BACKGROUND: The impact of county-level food access on mortality associated with steatotic liver disease, as well as post-liver transplant outcomes among individuals with steatotic liver disease, have not been characterized. METHODS: Data on steatotic liver disease-related mortality and outcomes of liver transplant recipients with steatotic liver disease between 2010 and 2020 were obtained from the Centers for Disease Control Prevention mortality as well as the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients databases. These data were linked to the food desert score, defined as the proportion of

Therapy deserts: A call to action to address inequitable access to therapy services among pediatric orthopaedic patients.

BACKGROUND: "Food deserts" are areas with limited access to affordable and healthy foods, disproportionately affecting low-income and ethnic-minority communities in the United States. Analogous disparities exist in other disciplines. Our interprofessional team observed "therapy deserts" in orthopaedic and rehabilitation settings, wherein pediatric patients (particularly those with Medicaid-type insurance) appeared to lack equal access to physical therapy (PT), occupational therapy (OT), and speech-language pathology (SLP) services. Inadequate access to therapy services places patients at risk

Association of Socioeconomic Risk Factors of Food Insecurity With Post-abdominal Surgery Complications in the USA.

Background Postoperative complications are common for gastrointestinal surgeries, ranging from mild symptoms such as nausea and scarring to fatal outcomes such as hemorrhage and sepsis. Comorbidities and overall preoperative health of a patient impact both surgical outcomes and postoperative complications. Socioeconomic risk factors such as food deserts, healthcare deserts, and transportation limitations can influence the risk of postoperative complications but have limited preexisting data. Proper nutrition has been found to aid in healing and can lessen postoperative complications. Methods W

Addressing mental health deserts: a geographic and economic analysis of mental health service gaps in Houston.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing prevalence of mental health challenges in the United States, particularly among low-income communities, has highlighted significant disparities in access to mental health services. This study investigated the concept of "mental health deserts," areas with insufficient mental health care providers, in the city of Houston, Texas. By utilizing the Distressed Community Index (DCI) to identify economically disadvantaged areas and sampling Psychology Today's database of over 3,000 licensed therapists in the Houston area to map mental health service availability, this res

A rather dry subject; investigating the study of arid-associated microbial communities.

Almost one third of Earth's land surface is arid, with deserts alone covering more than 46 million square kilometres. Nearly 2.1 billion people inhabit deserts or drylands and these regions are also home to a great diversity of plant and animal species including many that are unique to them. Aridity is a multifaceted environmental stress combining a lack of water with limited food availability and typically extremes of temperature, impacting animal species across the planet from polar cold valleys, to Andean deserts and the Sahara. These harsh environments are also home to diverse microbial co

From Supermarkets to Farms: Food Policy and the Obesity Epidemic.

The increasing rates of obesity are contributing to a decrease in life expectancy in the USA. Although innovative obesity therapies are being developed, they alone will not suffice to combat the widespread obesity epidemic. Patients with overweight and obesity face incredible headwinds in an increasingly obesogenic food environment derived from previous and current food, agricultural, and governmental policies. Regional policies contribute to the development of food swamps, which exert an even more substantial influence on weight gain than food deserts. Grocery store layouts and marketing prac

Harnessing desert resources: a comparative study of microgreens growth, nutrient dynamics, and performance in desert sand and rockwool.

Food security in arid regions, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), is a significant challenge due to harsh environmental conditions such as low rainfall, high temperatures, and low-quality soil. These factors limit agricultural productivity and compromise stability. In such regions, where desert dunes are abundant, using sand as a plant growth medium presents unique opportunities to reduce reliance on expensive, synthesized substrates like rockwool, which have a larger carbon footprint. Using desert sand as an alternative to growing low-input, yet nutrient-rich crops, such as microgreens,

Physiology and the future of animals in shifting-sand deserts: respiration, energetics and water balance.

The many invertebrates and reptiles of the shifting-sand deserts, and their rare mammals, live in and on the sand. Their conservation requires a thorough understanding of the physiological mechanisms that not only enable them to function, but that may buffer them against future change. The almost-spherical shape of the aeolian sand grains of shifting-sand deserts enables gas diffusion from the surface to maintain a normoxic environment deep in the sand, with sufficient volume to sustain sand-swimming animals, even the mammals. In the resource-poor desert landscapes, cellulose is the dominant s

CRISPR/Cas9-Mediated Knockout of the Corazonin Gene Indicates Its Regulation on the Cuticle Development of Desert Locusts (Schistocerca gregaria).

The desert locust (Schistocerca gregaria) represents one of the most destructive agricultural pests globally, renowned for its ability to form massive swarms that can devastate crops and threaten food security across vast regions. Despite the widespread application of the CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing system in several insect orders, its utilization in locusts, particularly in the desert locust, has remained relatively unexplored. We established a CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene-editing workflow for the desert locust using gene encoding for neuropeptide corazonin (Crz) as a target. We also analyzed the p

[Frozen berries as a risk factor for outbreaks of norovirus gastroenteritis. Results of an outbreak investigation in the summer of 2005 in Hamburg].

An outbreak of acute gastroenteritis occurred in Hamburg among guests of a canteen in August 2005. A total of 241 persons were found ill. In stool samples of 16 of them Norovirus Genogroup I was identified. Neither bacterial nor viral pathogens could be detected in food samples. Among 162 guests enrolled in a cohort study, 69 (42.6 %) met the case definition. A desert dish made from blackberries and yoghurt showed a significant association with the disease (RR 6.9; 95% CI 3.36-14.16). In addition, a protective effect of the decision for the alternative desert dish ice cream was observed (RR 0.

Long-day photoperiod interacts with vasopressin and food restriction to modulate reproductive status and vasopressin receptor expression of male golden spiny mice.

We tested the effects of photoperiod, water and food availability on body mass, reproductive status and arginine vasopressin receptor 1A (Avpr1a) mRNA expression in males of desert-adapted golden spiny mice, Acomys russatus. In Experiment 1, males were acclimated to short-day (SD; 8 h:16 h light:dark) or long-day (LD; 16 h:8 h light:dark) photoperiods with either saline (control) or vasopressin treatment for 3 weeks. The results of this experiment revealed that under control conditions, SD mice increased body mass by ~5% while LD mice decreased it by ~4%. SD photoperiod had no effect on reprod

Understanding selective predation: Are energy and nutrients important?

For generalist predators, a mixed diet can be advantageous as it allows individuals to exploit a potentially broad range of profitable food types. Despite this, some generalist predators show preferences for certain types of food and may forage selectively in places or at times when these foods are available. One such species is the lesser hairy-footed dunnart (Sminthopsis youngsoni). Usually considered to be a generalist insectivore, in the Simpson Desert, Australia, this small marsupial predator has been found to selectively consume wolf spiders (Family Lycosidae), for reasons yet unknown. Residential Fast-Food Exposures, Colorectal Cancer-Specific, and All-Cause Mortality: A Retrospective Study of CRC Cases from the Kentucky Cancer Registry.

Indicators of a poorer food environment, such as low food environment index scores, food deserts, and food swamps, have been linked to increased mortality and decreased survival among colorectal cancer (CRC) cases. This retrospective study of 47,807 primary CRC cases from the Kentucky Cancer Registry (KCR) database diagnosed between January 1995 and December 2021 used Cox-proportional-hazard (Cox-PH) regression models to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CRC-specific mortality and all-cause mortality associated with residential fast-food exposures.
