The prevalence of atopic diseases is increasing worldwide. Food allergies are the earliest manifestation of atopy. Atopic eczema affects about 18% of infants in the first 2 years of life and the main cause is allergy to multiple foods. A strong association has been shown between atopic eczema and IgE mediated allergy to milk, egg or peanut, but more than two-thirds of patients intolerant to food proteins have no evidence of IgE sensitization to the relevant food protein. Recently, patch testing with proteins has been found to be helpful in diagnosing food allergy in cases where skin prick test

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Food hypersensitivity (FH), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) have many overlapping symptoms, including abdominal discomfort, bloating, and altered bowel habits. We aimed to determine the frequency of FH in patients with IBS and functional FD.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adult patients of either gender diagnosed with IBS and/or FD as per the Rome III criteria were recruited. Patients underwent serological testing against 6 food allergens: beef, shrimp, egg white, milk, peanut, and soy-bean. Those testing positive were subjected to a food elimina

The aim of our work was to evaluate the morphological features of the mucous membrane of the stomach and duodenum in children with chronic diseases of the gastroduodenal zone on the background of food hypersensitivity. Morphological study was conducted for 50 adolescents aged 12 to 17 years who were in inpatient treatment in the gastroenterology department. In order to verify the diagnosis, all children were checked by fibroesophagogastroduodenoscopy of the upper digestive tract with biopsy of the mucous membrane of the stomach antrum and the descending part of the duodenum. Bioptates were sta

A rising prevalence of food hypersensitivity (FHS) and severe allergic reactions to food has been reported the last decade. To estimate the prevalence of FHS to the most common allergenic foods in an unselected population of children and adults. We investigated a cohort of 111 children <3 yr of age, 486 children 3 yr of age, 301 children older than 3 yr of age and 936 adults by questionnaire, skin prick test, histamine release test and specific immunoglobulin E followed by oral challenge to the most common allergenic foods. In total, 698 cases of possible FHS were recorded in 304 (16.6%) parti

Twenty-six children with atopic dermatitis and markedly elevated serum IgE concentrations were evaluated for clinical evidence of hypersensitivity to foods with double-blind placebo-controlled food challenges. Selection of foods for challenges was based on positive prick skin tests (greater than 3 mm wheal) or a convincing history. At least one positive skin test to a food antigen was found in 24/26 patients. A total of 111 double-blind placebo-controlled challenges were performed in these children after suspect foods were eliminated from their diets for 10 to 14 days. There were 23 positive c

A 2-year-11-month-old female spayed cat was at the Small Animal Teaching Hospital of Ghent University presenting with hyperactivity, scratching and licking all over her body and an abnormal urination behaviour. Nothing remarkable was found on the dermatology and neurological examination. Based on the owner's history and video material, the presence of feline hyperaesthesia syndrome (FHS) was hypothesised. A symptomatic treatment with gabapentin was established for a month without any significant improvement. An elimination diet with hydrolysed protein sources was started and, as a result, the

Food hypersensitivity (FHS) is the umbrella term used for food allergies that involve the immune system and food intolerances that do not involve the immune system. FHS has a huge impact on quality of life and any dietary advice given should aim to minimise this effect. Despite many advances made in diagnosing and managing patients with FHS, the cornerstone of management still remains avoidance of the relevant food. However, a commonly-presenting dilemma in clinical practice is deciding to what extent the food(s) should be avoided. The level of avoidance required is currently based on the type

The aim of this prospective study is to compare the prevalence of atopy in patients afflicted by nasal polyps with the atopy prevalence in healthy volunteers without nasal polyps, since systemic allergy and allergy in the nasal mucosa are still being debated as underlying causes for nasal polyps. Thirty-four cases with nasal polyposis without asthma and history of allergy or atopic disease were enrolled in the study and compared with 20 healthy volunteer controls in respect to asymptomatic food hypersensitivity. Hypersensitivity for 48 kinds of commonly consumed food in Turkey was investigated

A patient had a chronic hand eczema, presumably as a manifestation of atopy. Treatment resistance appeared due to handling certain foods that produced burning and stinging in the chronically eczematous skin and not in otherwise normal skin. Selected tests for delayed hypersensitivity and for immediate hyper sensitivity on intact skin of the back produced negative results, but on chronically inflamed skin of the arm and back, application of the pertinent foods produced a wheal and flare response. On intact skin, scratch tests with the foods produced positive results. Intradermal tests with comm

BACKGROUND: The recognition of food as the trigger of attacks occurs in approximately 25% of individuals with migraine. However, differentiating migraine food triggers and prodrome symptoms is still a challenge.
OBJECTIVE: To understand the association of clinical characteristics of migraine with food triggers and to identify predictors of food triggers.
METHODS: Patients with migraine diagnosed according to the criteria of the third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD-3) were evaluated for the presence or absence of food triggers.
RESULTS: In total, 502

The article presents analysis of causes of occurence and own diagnostic search for hypersensitivity to food additives in children. Food additives are substances of natural and artificial origin, purposefully added to food products for certain technological effects (color, resistance to spoiling, maintenance of the structure and appearance). It has been shown in the article that most frequently "harmful" food additives are present in meat, dairy and confectionery products, beverages, sauces, canned products, spices. The most threatening as to the development of allergic reactions in children (d

BACKGROUND: Mountain cedar pollen is recognized as a major cause of seasonal hypersensitivity in the US. We describe here that a subgroup of these patients also suffer from pollen food allergy syndrome (PFAS).
OBJECTIVE: We performed this study to determine the frequency of PFAS among patients with mountain cedar hypersensitivity.
METHODS: We performed mail-out/telephone surveys of 800 mountain cedar-sensitive patients in Austin, TX. The subjects for this survey were selected by telephone screening, and skin and serologic testing. We performed immunoblot inhibition assay and mass spectrometr

AIM: The main aim of the study was to describe the differences between some Northern countries regarding what foods, according to the patients, elicit hypersensitivity symptoms.
METHODS: At the participating clinics, patients with a history of food hypersensitivity (n = 1139) were asked to fill in a questionnaire in which 86 different foodstuffs were listed. Skin-prick tests (SPT) were performed with common inhalant allergens.
RESULTS: The foods that were reported as eliciting symptoms differed between countries. In Russia, Estonia, and Lithuania; citrus fruits, chocolate, honey, apple, haze

Serum antibodies to the autoantigen transglutaminase 2 (TG2) are increasingly harnessed to diagnose coeliac disease. Diagnostic guidelines for children give recommendation for a no-biopsy-based diagnosis through detection of high amounts of IgA anti-TG2 antibodies in serum with confirmation of positivity in a separate blood sample by characteristic autoantibody-staining of tissue. While measurement of IgA anti-TG2 also is important in the diagnostic workup of adults, the adult guidelines still mandate examination of gut biopsies. This requirement might well change in the future, as might the n

Food hypersensitivity (FHS) is the umbrella term used to describe both food allergy, which involves the immune system, and food intolerances, which do not. It is therefore important that the diagnosis is made by a specialist health care professional such as a paediatrician or allergist. Some experienced dietitians and health visitors may be able to assist in making a diagnosis. The diagnostic work-up includes a medical history and blood tests/skin tests (where applicable). A food and symptom diary followed by a special test diet to identify the foods causing the infant's symptoms may also be n

We present 25 patients, aged between 18 and 153 months, with clinical symptoms suggestive of allergy to food antigens. After undergoing exhaustive studies (including case histories, cutaneous tests for reactions to food antigen, peripheral eosinophils, secretory and humoral immunity, determination of total IgE and of specific RAST, exclusion-provocation diets) and without being able to identify an offender, patients were submitted to oral provocation with different food additives (tartrazine, sunset yellow FCF, new coccine, erythrosine, sodium benzoate, 4-methyl hydroxybenzoate and acetylsalic

BACKGROUND: An association between atopic disease and gastrointestinal complaints has been suggested.
AIM: To explore the association between atopic disease, gastrointestinal symptoms, and possible gastrointestinal manifestations of atopic disease in patients with self-reported food hypersensitivity.
METHODS: Symptoms, skin prick tests, serum markers of allergy and intestinal permeability were recorded in 71 adult patients. Eosinophils, tryptase- and IgE-positive cells were counted in duodenal biopsies.
RESULTS: Sixty-six (93%) patients had irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and 43 (61%) had at

This review highlights some of the research advances in anaphylaxis and hypersensitivity reactions to foods, drugs, and insect venom that were reported primarily in this Journal from 2001 to 2002. Among the topics highlighted: Epinephrine injected intramuscularly into the thigh provides the most efficient absorption profile for adults and children; determination of serum IgE antibody-specific food allergen concentrations and atopy patch tests with foods show promise for enhanced diagnostic accuracy; numerous food allergens are now characterized on the molecular level, allowing for improved dia
