Food-based interventions to mitigate household food insecurity in Canada: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Household food insecurity (HFI) is a persistent and important public health and policy concern within Canada that continues to be widespread in the face of economic uncertainties and inflation. The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the evidence on food-based interventions that could reduce HFI in Canada. METHODS: Studies that assessed a food-based intervention that might reduce food insecurity and measured HFI were included, regardless of whether that was the primary purpose of the study. Four databases were searched up to 19 February 2025. Screening of abstr

Exploring the association between food insecurity and food skills among school-aged children.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between household food insecurity (FI) and children's involvement in family meal choices and food preparation, used as proxies for children's food skills, and to explore gender differences within these associations. DESIGN: Households were classified as food-secure or food-insecure using the six-item, short-form Household Food Security Survey Module. Children's involvement in family meal choices and food preparation were treated as proxies for children's food skills. Mixed-effects multinomial logistic regression models were used. SETTING: Public schools

Food Insecurity and Mental Health: A Moderated Mediation Analysis.

Extensive research has demonstrated the negative impact of food insecurity on mental health; however, the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this relationship remain underexplored. Using data from the 2022 National Health Interview Survey (N = 25,703), this study investigates whether sleep problems mediate the relationship between food insecurity and mental health outcomes-specifically depressive and anxiety symptoms-and whether marital status moderates this relationship. The findings indicate that sleep problems partially mediate the effects of food insecurity on depressive and an

Official estimates of global food insecurity undercount acute hunger.

The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system is the official global method for classifying food insecurity. As of 2023, international agencies and governments use IPC analyses to allocate more than US$6 billion of humanitarian assistance annually. Here we evaluate data from approximately 1 billion people in more than 10,000 IPC subnational analyses conducted between 2017 and 2023. We find that IPC estimates understate the extent and severity of crises. Our primary estimates indicate that IPC subnational analyses underestimate the number of acutely hungry people in the world,

Food Insecurity and Dental Caries in Rural Mexican Populations.

OBJECTIVE: Food insecurity (FI) is a priority for government and health organizations. Over 95% of the world's population has a carious lesion or will develop one before death. This study evaluated the association between FI and oral health in two rural communities in Chiapas, Mexico. METHODS: The study was conducted with patients attending an oral health campaign for dental checkups. Data were collected between April and August 2017 using the Latin-American and Caribbean Scale of Food Security (ELCSA) and the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). We included 209 parti

Food insecurity during COVID-19: An Australian university experience.

The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence, severity, coping strategies and precipitating factors of food insecurity in university students in a large multi-campus Australian university during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, in context of providing information to inform institutional support. This was a cross-sectional analysis which was part of a larger university-led research project, the Thrive@Home study conducted at Monash University during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main outcome measures included: Sociodemographic characteristics, PROMIS anxiety, PROMIS depression and the six-it

Food insecurity, hunger, stress, and homelessness among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Compared to the effects of stress on hunger, the temporal effect of hunger on stress levels is less understood, especially in the context of everyday lives of vulnerable populations with unstable access to food. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to examine the effects of food insecurity and momentary hunger on momentary stress and stress variability in a sample of currently and formerly homeless young adults. METHOD: We used a 7-day ecological momentary assessment study querying affect, hunger, and risky behaviors. A mixed-effects location scale model was used to examine the effects o

Could prenatal food insecurity influence neonatal abstinence syndrome severity?

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: In general populations, prenatal food insecurity negatively affects maternal and infant health. Our aim was to estimate and test the association between prenatal food insecurity and neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) severity. DESIGN/SETTING: Single-site prospective cohort design. Women receiving opioid agonist treatment with methadone or buprenorphine were interviewed (including demographics and food insecurity) during the third trimester at the combined obstetric/opioid use disorder treatment clinic at Boston Medical Center (BMC) in Boston, MA, USA, a large urban safety

Power Imbalances, Food Insecurity, and Children's Rights in Canada.

Increasingly, food is provided through an industrial food system that separates people from the source of their food and results in high rates of food insecurity, particularly for the most vulnerable in society. A lack of food is a symptom of a lack of power in a system that privileges free market principles over social justice and the protection of human rights. In Canada, the high rates of food insecurity among Canadian children is a reflection of their lack of power and the disregard of their human rights, despite the adoption of the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child

Armed conflict accelerates cropland loss and food insecurity worldwide.

Armed conflict is an escalating threat to global food security yet its impact on cropland dynamics is poorly understood at global scale. Here we combine annual high-resolution cropland maps (2000-2020) with more than 460,000 conflict events across 155 countries to assess how armed conflicts affect cropland loss and food security. By 2020, conflict-exposed areas within 5 km of conflict events covered only 3% of global land but contained 6% of global cropland, indicating disproportionate exposure of agricultural land to conflict. Difference-in-differences estimates show that conflict exposure ca

Heterogeneity in associations between food insecurity and diabetes outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is associated with worse diabetes outcomes, but how that association may vary across individuals is unclear. We sought to better understand possible heterogeneity in the association between food insecurity and diabetes outcomes. METHODS: Longitudinal cohort study of adults with type 2 diabetes assessed for food insecurity in community-based health centres. Diabetes outcomes were haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), 12 months after food insecurity assessment. We used three machine learning met

Food and Nutrition Insecurity in Kidney Disease: Practitioner Considerations.

The definition of food insecurity is lack of access to sufficient safe food for normal growth and for an active and healthy life. Food insecurity may be geographically classified: In low-income countries, it may be characterized by undernutrition and frank starvation, while in higher-income ones, food insecurity is associated with high consumption of energy-dense foods of poor nutritional quality. This review highlights the relationship between food insecurity and CKD and its negative effect on kidney development, CKD progression, and health outcomes. In developed countries, compensatory eatin

Food insecurity, chronic pain, and use of prescription opioids.

Chronic pain has been on the rise in recent decades in Canada. Accordingly, the use of prescription opioids (PO) in Canada increased drastically between 2005 and 2014, only starting to decrease in 2015. Both pain and PO use have serious public health repercussions, disproporionately affecting select socially disadvantaged populations. Food insecurity is a strong risk factor for mental disorders and suicidal outcomes, yet its relationship to chronic pain and PO use is largely unknown. Using two recent cycles from the population representative Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), we examined
