Food Intolerances, Food Allergies and IBS: Lights and Shadows.

This narrative review delves into the intricate relationship between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and food intolerances. IBS, a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder, is characterized by symptoms like abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. The prevalence of IBS has increased globally, especially among young adults. Food and dietary habits play a crucial role in IBS management. About 85-90% of IBS patients report symptom exacerbation linked to specific food consumption, highlighting the strong connection between food intolerances and IBS. Food intolerances often exhibit a dose-depend

[A global vision of adverse reactions to foods: food allergy and food intolerance].

Over the last years, there has been an increase in adverse food reactions, probably associated with life style changes in the past decades. An adverse food reaction is any clinically abnormal response that can be attributed to ingestion, contact or inhalation of a food, its derivatives or an additive contained in it. They can be classified as food allergy or intolerance. Food allergies are usually immune-mediated, associated with IgE. Adverse reactions to food have a large clinical and social repercussion, which can be fatal in some cases and impair the quality of life of patients. This implie

Prevalence of food allergy/intolerance in Europe.

Discussed in this paper is the prevalence of allergy and intolerance to foods in Europe. Prevalence of allergy to food additives is not included. A fully reliable estimate of the prevalence of food allergy/intolerance does not exist. Prevalence changes with age, as does the relative importance of the most common food allergens. The cumulative prevalence of allergy and intolerance to cow's milk during the first year of life is approximately 2%. The total prevalence of food allergy/intolerance in children is not as well documented. In 18-month-old infants the Danish estimate is 6.5%. The high pr

Food intolerance in patients with chronic fatigue.

Intolerance to various foods is reported often by patients seeking evaluation for chronic fatigue, a common symptom in primary care practice. To assess the prevalence and significance of this phenomenon we studied 200 consecutive patients with chronic fatigue who were given a comprehensive medical and psychiatric evaluation. Intolerance to foods from at least three different groups was reported by 27 patients (13.5%). We compared these patients with 27 age- and gender-matched patients from the same cohort of fatigued patients. Physical examination and laboratory testing showed few abnormalitie

Clinical manifestations of food allergy: differentiating true allergy from food intolerance.

Food allergy is an abnormal immunologic reaction to food proteins. In this article, we differentiate food allergy from food intolerance and other conditions that may mimic food allergy. We describe clinical presentations of food allergy, outline a practical approach for evaluating patients with suspected food allergy, and discuss recommendations for management.

Food intolerances in children and adolescents in Switzerland.

Adverse food reactions have become an important health concern in pediatrics. There are discrepancies between diagnosed and self-reported food allergies and intolerances, leading to food avoidance with possible psychological and nutritional implications in the latter. There is no data available so far on the number of children and adolescents, who reduce or completely avoid certain foods in their diet. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of children and adolescents in the Northwest of Switzerland, who omit foods from their diet because of a self-reported intolerance, as well

Food-chemical intolerance in the breastfed infant.

Adverse food reactions can be caused by a wide range of foods and the reactions vary widely too. Lactation consultants and other health professionals should look for causes of infant symptoms associated with less than optimal breastfeeding management and rule out medical issues before assuming adverse food reactions are involved. The investigation of adverse food reactions can be complex and ideally should be guided and monitored by a dietitian experienced in the field. Maternal elimination diets require high motivation and must include all important nutrients.

Review article: the diagnosis and management of food allergy and food intolerances.

BACKGROUND: Adverse reactions to food include immune mediated food allergies and non-immune mediated food intolerances. Food allergies and intolerances are often confused by health professionals, patients and the public. AIM: To critically review the data relating to diagnosis and management of food allergy and food intolerance in adults and children. METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Database were searched up until May 2014, using search terms related to food allergy and intolerance. RESULTS: An estimated one-fifth of the population believe that they have adverse reactions to food.

Food intolerance and food allergy in children: a review of 68 cases.

The clinical and laboratory features of 68 children with food intolerance or food allergy are reviewed. Young children were affected the most with 79% first experiencing symptoms before age 1 year. Forty-eight (70%) children presented with gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting, diarrhoea, colic, abdominal pain, failure to thrive), 16 (24%) children with skin manifestations (eczema, urticaria, angioneurotic oedema, other rashes), and 4 (6%) children with wheeze. Twenty-one children had failed to thrive before diagnosis. A single food (most commonly cows' milk) was concerned in 28 (41%) cases. For

The red wine provocation test: intolerance to histamine as a model for food intolerance.

Sneezing, flush, headache, diarrhea, skin itch, and shortness of breath are symptoms occurring in patients intolerant to wine after drinking one glass of red wine. The role of histamine in wine intolerance was evaluated by a red wine provocation test in 28 patients with a history of wine intolerance and in 10 controls with good tolerance of wine. Patients were challenged with 125 ml red wine (equivalent to 50 micrograms histamine); blood samples were drawn before and after 15 and 30 minutes. Plasma histamine was assessed by a radioimmunoassay. Lung function tests were performed before and afte

Food intolerances and eosinophilic esophagitis in childhood.

Food intolerance is an adverse reaction to a particular food or ingredient that may or may not be related to the immune system. A deficiency in digestive enzymes can also cause some types of food intolerances like lactose and gluten intolerance. Food intolerances may cause unpleasant symptoms, including nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, which usually begin about half an hour after eating or drinking the food in question, but sometimes symptoms may delayed up to 48 h. There is also a strong genetic pattern to food intolerances. Intolerance reactions to food chemicals are mostly do

Adverse reactions to food: allergies and intolerances.

All the anomalous reactions secondary to food ingestion are defined as 'adverse reactions to food'. In 1995 the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology suggested a classification on the basis of the responsible pathogenetic mechanism; according to this classification, non-toxic reactions can be divided into 'food allergies' when they recognize immunological mechanisms, and 'food intolerances' when there are no immunological implications. The diagnostic approach to adverse reactions to food is based on accurate clinical history and objective examination, and further execution of

Fermentation, fermented foods and lactose intolerance.

Lactose (milk sugar) is a fermentable substrate. It can be fermented outside of the body to produce cheeses, yoghurts and acidified milks. It can be fermented within the large intestine in those people who have insufficient expression of lactase enzyme on the intestinal mucosa to ferment this disaccharide to its absorbable, simple hexose sugars: glucose and galactose. In this way, the issues of lactose intolerance and of fermented foods are joined. It is only at the extremes of life, in infancy and old age, in which severe and life-threatening consequences from lactose maldigestion may occur.

[Food sensitivities of the digestive tract-Part 2: Food intolerances].

Adverse reactions to food affect about one third of the population. They are based on very different mechanisms and are triggered by specific foods. They are divided into food intolerances, which manifest mainly in the gastrointestinal tract and food allergies, which can also cause extraintestinal symptoms and have an immunological genesis. In adults, food intolerances are significantly more common than food allergies with a prevalence of approximately 10-20%. The most important food intolerances are sugar intolerances, such as lactose and fructose intolerance but intolerances to wheat also pl
