Role of olfaction in the formation of preference for high-fat foods in mice.

Male albino mice were given access to both high- and low-fat food mixtures in the home cage for 4 days. Mice were then divided into three groups and given a choice test in which all groups demonstrated a significant preference for the high-fat food mixture. One group was then bilaterally olfactory nerve sectioned. Seven days following surgery, all groups were given a second choice test. Olfactory nerve-sectioned mice (while anosmic) showed no preference, whereas high-fat food preference in the two control groups strengthened. However, high-fat food preference returned to recovered nerve-sectio

Food Preferences and Nutritional Adequacy in Urban Informal Settlements: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Urban informal settlements often face challenges related to food insecurity and poor nutritional adequacy. This study examines food preferences and dietary diversity among households in informal settlements in Tshwane (Pretoria), Gauteng, South Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 367 households. The Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) was used to measure the diversity of foods consumed over a 24-h recall period. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed to identify major dietary patterns based on the consumption of different food gr

Snail coprophagy: the encounter filter, food preferences, and rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis) prevalence.

Understanding the factors driving infection prevalence among host species is crucial for effective disease mitigation. Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the rat lungworm, causes neuroangiostrongyliasis and serves as an excellent model for studying infection dynamics across hosts. This study investigates the relative impact of encounter rates on A. cantonensis prevalence in snail hosts by assessing their coprophagic tendencies. Multiple-choice feeding assays were conducted with four snail species (Parmarion martensi, Laevicaulis alte, Lissachatina fulica, and Veronicella cubensis) differing in A. ca

Food preferences throughout the menstrual cycle - A computer-assisted neuro-endocrino-psychological investigation.

BACKGROUND: As eating behavior changes in relation to the menstrual cycle and weight changes with menopausal transition, ovarian hormones appear to be involved in regulating eating behavior. However, observations are contradictory and are difficult to compare, due to methodological problems related to nutritional epidemiology. To better understand the relationship between ovarian steroid hormones and eating behavior, our study evaluates women's responses to visual food cues at different points in the menstrual cycle with their specific serum estrogen/progesterone levels and women's responses i

Adaptation and evaluation of a food preference assessment tool for older adults in geriatric care: the DYSPHAGING Preferences study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Undernutrition is a major concern in older adults due to its multifactorial origins and its impact on morbidity and mortality. Oropharyngeal dysphagia is common in frail geriatric patients and contributes to undernutrition by prompting individuals to progressively withdraw foods from their diet, leading to dietary imbalance and potential complications. Although texture adaptation and nutritional strategies are widely implemented in clinical practice, little is known about the actual food preferences of hospitalised older adults with dysphagia. Existing tools to assess food prefer

Changes in eating habits and food preferences in breast cancer patients undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy.

Change in eating habits in early breast cancer (EBC) patients during chemotherapy has been poorly studied in the literature. The primary aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate food preferences and weight change in EBC patients before and after adjuvant chemotherapy. From April 2014 to June 2018, 205 EBC patients underwent a dietary assessment according to the following timeline: baseline evaluation (one week before starting chemotherapy, T0); first follow-up (approximately 2-3 months after starting chemotherapy, T1); final follow-up (one week after chemotherapy end, T2). A statistical

Assessing food preferences among persons with profound mental retardation: providing opportunities to make choices.

Increased attention has been directed recently to assisting persons with severe handicaps to express preferences concerning events in their lives. We evaluated a program for assessing choice-making skills to provide opportunities for persons with profound mental retardation to express food and drink preferences. In Experiment 1, the assessment procedure involving repeated, paired-item presentations resulted in active choice making and the identification of preferences for all 5 participants. Results also indicated that caregiver opinion was not predictive of participant food and drink preferen

When tasty becomes threatening: a neurobehavioral perspective on subjective food preferences in eating disorders.

Subjective food preferences significantly influence eating behavior, and in eating disorders (EDs), these preferences are often altered. Neuroimaging and neurobehavioral studies have revealed atypical brain responses to food cues in anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED), and these findings may point to disrupted subjective food valuation as a key neurobiological mechanism. This narrative review synthesizes recent findings suggesting that altered reward processing and valuation contribute to the persistence and complexity of disordered eating behaviors. Th

Impact of temporomandibular disorder on food preference behavior in adult male rats.

OBJECTIVE: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of conditions affecting the jaw, surrounding muscles and associated structures. Researches indicate that TMD has implications for changes in nutritional behavior. This study investigates the impact of TMD on the food preference behavior of rats, examining various food models with differing caloric content, taste, and texture. DESIGN: Forty-two male Wistar rats (200-250 g) were divided into six groups, comprising three control and three pain or TMD groups. Induction of TMD by injection of complete Freund adjuvant (CFA) into the left temp

Involvement of opioid signaling in food preference and motivation: Studies in laboratory animals.

Motivation is a complex neurobiological process that initiates, directs, and maintains goal-oriented behavior. Although distinct components of motivated behavior are difficult to investigate, appetitive and consummatory phases of motivation are experimentally separable. Different neurotransmitter systems, particularly the mesolimbic dopaminergic system, have been associated with food motivation. Over the last two decades, however, research focusing on the role of opioid signaling has been particularly growing in this area. Opioid receptors seem to be involved, via neuroanatomically distinct me

Food quality, competition, and parasitism influence feeding preference in a neotropical lepidopteran.

We surveyed Lepidoptera found on 11 species of Inga (Fabaceae:Mimosoideae) co-existing on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, to evaluate factors influencing diet choice. Of the 47 species of caterpillars (747 individuals) recorded, each fed on a distinct set of Inga. In the field, 96% of the individuals were found on young leaves. Growth rates of caterpillars that were fed leaves in the laboratory were 60% higher on young leaves compared to mature leaves. When caterpillars were fed leaves of nonhost Inga, they grew more slowly. These data provide support for a link between preference and performan

A high-throughput and sensitive method for food preference assays in the argentine ant.

BACKGROUND: Insects pose significant challenges in both pest management and ecological conservation. Often, the most effective strategy is employing toxicant-laced baits, which also must be designed to specifically attract and be preferred by the targeted species for optimal species-specific effectiveness. However, traditional methods for measuring bait preference are either noncomparative, meaning that most animals only ever taste one bait, or suffer from methodological or conceptual limitations. Here we demonstrate the value of direct comparison food preference assays using the invasive and

On the displacement of leisure items by food during multiple-stimulus preference assessments.

Previous studies have demonstrated that when food and leisure stimuli are combined in multiple-stimulus preference assessments, individuals typically select food more often, although the leisure stimuli also have known reinforcing properties. The purpose of the current study was to replicate this effect and determine its durability by examining the effect after mealtimes. Four adults who had been diagnosed with severe mental retardation were given three initial multiple-stimulus (without replacement) preference assessments (i.e., food, leisure stimuli, and combined). All participants selected
