Foodborne disease and food control in the Gulf States.

Gulf States in the Middle East have had to change rapidly from subsidence herding, farming and fishing communities to modern states through the exploitation of revenue-generating petroleum products. Fresh water is an even more precious commodity than oil today as this is seen as a rapidly diminishing resource through over use of aquifers with scarce and unpredictable rainfall not replenishing the needs of these countries which increasing rely on reverse-osmosis (RO) desalination of seawater but at a cost in terms of energy. Recycling of waste water and sewage is carried out and used to water u

Iatrogenic high-risk populations and foodborne disease.

Certain subsets of the population are at a greater risk of acquiring foodborne infections and have a greater propensity to develop serious complications. Susceptibility to foodborne infection is dependent on numerous factors that largely relate to the status of an individual's defense systems in regard to both preventing and mitigating foodborne illness. Key examples include the increased susceptibility of pregnant women to listeriosis and increased severity of enteric bacterial infections in patients with AIDS. Clinicians must communicate with higher-risk patients about the risks of foodborne

Foodborne disease outbreaks in Australia, 1995 to 2000.

Health agencies are increasingly conducting systematic reviews of foodborne disease outbreak investigations to develop strategies to prevent future outbreaks. We surveyed state and territory health departments to summarise the epidemiology of foodborne disease outbreaks in Australia from 1995 to 2000. From 1995 through 2000, 293 outbreaks were identified, with 214 being of foodborne origin. One hundred and seventy-four (81%) had a known aetiology, and accounted for 80 per cent (6,472/8,124) of illnesses. There were 20 deaths attributed to foodborne illness. Of the 214 outbreaks, bacterial dise

Worldwide Surveillance of Foodborne Disease: the Need to Improve †.

A foodborne-disease surveillance program is an essential part of a food safety program. Foodborne surveillance should be able to issue early alerts on contaminated food to which a large population is exposed; collate notifications of enteric diseases and laboratory isolations; report foodborne disease incidents on a regular basis; and use sentinel and specific epidemiological studies as required. Although most countries have some kind of reporting of notifiable diseases, few have foodborne-disease surveillance programs, and little is known of foodborne disease in general on a worldwide basis.

Foodborne Diseases: A Study before and during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Brazil.

Foodborne Diseases (FBDs) are a worldwide problem and occur after contaminated food has been ingested, signaling a lack of food quality. Even though the SARS-CoV-2 virus is not transmitted through food, the COVID-19 pandemic has caused several challenges worldwide that have had direct implications on food production and handling, stimulating and reinforcing the adoption of good manufacturing and food handling practices. The aim of this study was to analyze data on notifications of FBD in Brazil in the years before (2018 and 2019) and during (2020 and 2021) the COVID-19 pandemic. Secondary data

Disparities in severe shigellosis among adults - Foodborne diseases active surveillance network, 2002-2014.

BACKGROUND: Shigella causes approximately 500,000 illnesses, 6000 hospitalizations, and 40 deaths in the United States annually, but incidence and populations at risk for severe shigellosis among adults are unclear. This study describes severe shigellosis among US adults. METHODS: We analyzed Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network data for infections caused by Shigella among adults ≥18 years old during 2002-2014. Criteria to define severe shigellosis included hospitalization, bacteremia, or death. We estimated annual incidence of shigellosis per 100,000 among adult populations, and co

Epidemiology and Control of Foodborne Diseases in Resource-Limited Settings: Insights from Afghanistan.

Food safety is a major global public health concern, with unsafe foods contaminated by biological, chemical, and physical hazards causing foodborne diseases (FBDs), resulting in a high global burden of illness and death. This narrative review provides an overview of current evidence on the epidemiology, risk factors, and control strategies of FBDs, with particular attention to challenges in resource-limited settings. These diseases are disproportionately severe in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to interconnected factors such as poor sanitation, limited access to clean water, inad

The role of seafood in foodborne diseases in the United States of America.

In the United States of America, seafood ranked third on the list of products which caused foodborne disease between 1983 and 1992. Outbreaks connected with fish vectors were caused by scombroid, ciguatoxin, bacteria and unknown agents; in shellfish, unknown agents, paralytic shellfish poisoning, Vibrio spp. and other bacteria, followed by hepatitis A virus, were responsible for the outbreaks. At least ten genera of bacterial pathogens have been implicated in seafood-borne diseases. Over the past twenty-five years, bacterial pathogens associated with faecal contamination have represented only

Risks of Practices, Procedures and Processes that Lead to Outbreaks of Foodborne Diseases.

Factors that contributed to outbreaks of foodborne diseases reported in the U.S. from 1977-1982 are identified and classified by disease and place where implicated foods were mishandled. Data for these years are tabulated and combined with data from the years 1961-1976. Inadequate cooling - either leaving foods at room or warm outside temperatures or storing them in large containers while being refrigerated - was associated with most of the outbreaks. Ranking of all factors has changed little over four periods of review, but during the last period numerous outbreaks primarily due to ingestion

World Health Organization attribution of burden of foodborne diseases to transmission pathways and foods.

Identifying the sources of foodborne diseases is crucial for guiding national food safety strategies and supporting policies that promote safe and sustainable food production. Here we present global estimates of the proportions of burden of disease attributable to foodborne transmission, other major transmission pathways, and specific food categories for 29 viral, bacterial, parasitic, and chemical hazards, based on a structured expert judgement (SEJ) study commissioned by the World Health Organization (WHO) and supervised by the WHO Foodborne Disease Burden Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG)

Food handlers and foodborne diseases: grounds for safety and public and occupational health actions.

One of the causes of foodborne diseases is contamination during food preparation; food handlers carrying pathogens might be involved in the origin of this condition. This problem is more serious in health care facilities, since consumers of contaminated food are already ill. Therefore, operational procedures should be formulated to prevent incidents. We performed a review of scientific studies, legislation and regulations on this subject. The results indicate that the main causes of food contamination involving food handlers to be considered in strategies to reduce, or even eliminate foodborne

Risk perception of foodborne diseases by pregnant women in Brazil: An exploratory case study.

Pregnant women are highly susceptible to foodborne diseases (FBD), such as listeriosis, salmonellosis, and toxoplasmosis due to hormonal and immunological changes during pregnancy. However, data on the risk perception and knowledge of FBD among pregnant women is scarce. This exploratory study aimed to assess the risk perception, knowledge of FBD and food safety and food handling practices among pregnant women in Brazil. Anonymously, 404 pregnant women completed a structured questionnaire comprised of 46 questions. The participants were asked about their food handling practices, knowledge of fo

Use of Veterinary Vaccines for Livestock as a Strategy to Control Foodborne Parasitic Diseases.

Foodborne diseases (FBDs) are a major concern worldwide since they are associated with high mortality and morbidity in the human population. Among the causative agents of FBDs, Taenia solium, Echinococcus granulosus, Toxoplasma gondii, Cryptosporidium spp., and Trichinella spiralis are listed in the top global risk ranking of foodborne parasites. One common feature between them is that they affect domestic livestock, encompassing an enormous risk to global food production and human health from farm to fork, infecting animals, and people either directly or indirectly. Several approaches have be
