Foot and ankle injuries in basketball are discussed in three unrelated categories in this article. This includes a practical differential diagnosis of ankle sprains, acute conditions of the mid and hindfoot, overuse syndromes of nerve entrapment, fascial strain, synovitis, joint subluxation, and inflammation resulting from repetitive stress. The diagnosis and treatment of tendon inflammation of the extrinsic foot musculature is also reviewed.

In brief: With the increasing interest in figure skating over the past 20 years has come an increase in the number of injuries. The foot, ankle, and lower leg are the most common injury sites; this paper focuses on boot-related injuries to the foot and ankle. Of particular importance is the fact that almost all overuse injuries related to this sport respond to nonoperative treatment, which consists primarily of altering the skating boot. Changes in the skater's training and/or technique may also be necessary.

The theatrical dancer is a unique combination of athlete and artist. The physical demands of dance class, rehearsal, and performance can lead to injury, particularly to the foot and ankle. Ankle sprains are the most common acute injury. Chronic injuries predominate and relate primarily to the repeated impact loading of the foot and ankle on the dance floor. Contributing factors include anatomic variation, improper technique, and fatigue. Early and aggressive conservative management is usually successful and surgery is rarely indicated. Orthotics play a limited but potentially useful role in tr

A serious kind of fractured foot ailment is a foot crush injury. Foot injury commonly happens in accidents involving transportation or the workplace, such as automobile accidents, big objects falling on the foot, or heavy machinery running over the foot. Foot crush injuries are more severe than regular foot fractures. These wounds are usually very serious, involving many fractures and soft tissue injuries. The main symptoms include pain, severe muscle and tissue damage, and extreme swelling. Because of this, treating a foot crush injury can be quite challenging and frequently requires the coll

Bone stress injuries (BSIs) are a frequent finding in athletes, particularly of the foot and ankle. A BSI is caused by recurring microtrauma to the cortical or trabecular bone exceeding the repair capacity of normal bone. The most frequent fractures at the ankle are low risk, characterized by a low risk for nonunion. These include the posteromedial tibia, the calcaneus, and the metatarsal diaphysis. High-risk stress fractures have a higher risk for nonunion and need more aggressive treatment. Examples are the medial malleolus, navicular bone, and the base of the second and fifth metatarsal bon

The epidemiology of any given topic sometimes is overlooked. This is true particularly with sports physicians and sports injuries. The identification of sports-specific injury patterns by collection and examination of data can help prevent injuries. Thus, as a physician involved in any sport, it is essential to have this knowledge because understanding it and imparting it may allow a valuable contribution to the health and safety of the athletes and success of the teams.

Injuries to the ankle and foot are common in the young athlete, especially with increasing participation and high levels of competitiveness in youth sports programs. Knowledge of the normal development of the foot and ankle is crucial to understand age-specific injury patterns because acute or chronic/repetitive stress to the developing skeleton results in injuries that differ from those seen in adults. Congenital abnormalities may also predispose children to increased risk of injury and pain. Radiologists must be aware of these distinctions to diagnose and classify injuries correctly for opti

BACKGROUND: Gymnastics is a competitive and popular sport that is started at an early age, and elite female gymnasts reach their prime in mid-teenage years. The level of intensity of practice and competition, the number of events, and the degree of difficulty of the maneuvers make gymnastics one of the most injury-producing sports.
METHODS: Over a 3-year period, 14 elite, female gymnasts were seen in one foot and ankle center. The mean age was 17 (range 14 to 21) years. All gymnasts sustained acute or sub-acute injuries to the foot or ankle requiring surgery. The mechanism of injury, the type

The complexity of foot and ankle anatomy and function is unique in the musculoskeletal system. Understanding the complex anatomy alone is a daunting task, not to mention transferring that understanding to the two-dimensional planes encountered on imaging studies. When evaluating sports injuries in the foot and ankle, the interpreting radiologist must take into account the type of activity, vector of stress, and inherent characteristics of the involved structures. A strong working relationship with the health care providers managing patient care, ideally orthopedists, is essential. But in this

In the past, foot injuries in patients with multiple trauma were thought to be of lesser importance than fractures of long bones. In one prospective study from the authors' institutions, however, multiple-trauma patients with foot injuries were shown to have a poorer functional outcome compared with matched controls. To address these concerns, this article has two parts. The first part is an overview of general principles in the treatment of foot injuries in polytrauma patients. The treatment of specific injuries is beyond the scope of this article, but an approach is highlighted that can be r

Thermal injuries are one of the most common injuries in both civilian and combat scenarios. The importance of clinical determination of burn and frostbite injuries and treatment involves understanding the pathophysiology and mechanisms of these injuries while continually reviewing literature and studying new treatment modalities. This present review examines the (1) epidemiology, (2) etiology, (3) pathophysiology and classification, and (4) treatment of thermal injuries occurring to the foot. In addition to the paucity of new literature and studies on thermal injury, this is the first review,

Dancers are highly vulnerable to injuries due to high dynamic overload, extreme positions and motions, and excessive use. Increased load at the forefoot with jumping and high-impact lands can cause sesamoiditis and stress fractures of the metatarsals. Significant plantarflexion can lead to posterior joint impingement and flexor hallucis longus tendonitis, whereas forced dorsiflexion can cause anterior joint impingement. Most pathologies can be diagnosed on physical examination and various imaging modalities. Treatment should be tailored to the dancers' needs and should begin with a course of c

BACKGROUND: Improvements in protection and medical treatments have resulted in increasing numbers of modern-warfare casualties surviving with complex lower-extremity injuries. To our knowledge, there has been no prior analysis of foot and ankle blast injuries as a result of improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The aims of this study were to report the pattern of injury and determine which factors are associated with a poor clinical outcome.
METHODS: U.K. service personnel who had sustained lower leg injuries following an under-vehicle explosion from January 2006 to December 2008 were identifi

PURPOSE: To evaluate the characteristics of bicyclespoke injuries in a suburban Indian population.
METHODS: 30 male and 11 female children aged 4 to 12 (mean, 6) years with bicycle-spoke injuries were prospectively studied. Data collected included patient age, gender, position at the time of injury, site, type, and characteristics of the injury. According to the Oestern and Tscherne classification, soft-tissue injuries were classified into grades 0 to 3.
RESULTS: 37 patients injured the right foot, and 4 the left foot; 34 by the rear wheel and 7 by the front wheel. All front-wheel injuries i

Foot and ankle injuries are extremely common among athletes and other physically active individuals. Rehabilitation programs that emphasize the use of therapeutic exercise to restore joint range of motion, muscle strength, neuromuscular coordination, and gait mechanics have been shown to have clinical success for patients suffering various foot and ankle pathologies. Rehabilitation programs are discussed for ankle sprains, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and turf toe.

Playing sports barefoot has been contested since the very beginnings of athletic competition. Even today, some data suggest that shoes may limit the adaptive pronation that occurs after footstrike during running gait. This pronation likely protects runners from injury. Boardsport participants who perform their sports barefoot on the water seem to be at risk for foot and ankle injuries. The high-impact forces in gymnastics place participants at risk for foot and ankle injuries, as well. Swimming and diving have a low rate of foot and ankle injuries. The risk of ankle sprain in beach volleyball,

Conventional radiography plays an essential role in the primary evaluation of acute ankle and foot trauma. In the case of complex injuries, however, subsequent computed tomography (CT) is nowadays recommended. In this connection, multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) allows better temporal, spatial, and contrast resolution compared with the conventional single-slice spiral CT. Multiplanar reformation and three-dimensional reconstruction of the acquired data sets are also helpful tools for critical assessment of therapeutic intervention. This report reviews the potential of the MDCT techniqu
