Traumatic injuries to the midtarsal joint are quite uncommon and usually involve fractures of adjacent bones. Pure dislocations without fracture are very rare. A patient sustained a pure dislocation that was treated with a nonweight-bearing cast for six weeks, but she went on to present with chronic subluxation at the midtarsal joint. Imaging modalities were confusing because the pathology was seen only when the deformation was present throughout the imaging examination, not when it was reduced. Stress varus- valgus radiographs of the foot, not ankle, provided a definitive diagnosis. The patie

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of full versus partial subperiosteal fibular bone graft for subtalar joint arthrodesis in patients with pes planovalgus foot deformity associated with residual polio myelitis. A prospective study was carried out on 16 patients with postpoliomyelitis valgus foot deformity secondary to invertor muscle paralysis. All patients were treated by peroneal tendon transfer to the medial metatarsals and subtalar extra-articular arthrodesis. In 12 patients, subperiosteal partial fibular graft was used, while four patients received a full fibular graft.

In their communication the authors describe two cases of a very rare injury presented in the world specialized literature under the title "luxation pedis cum talo". They treated two professional sportsmen with this diagnosis at the clinic. The authors describe the pathological anatomy of this injury where there occurs almost complete rupture of both deltoid and fibular ligaments of the ankle. In both mentioned cases, despite the severe instability of the nakledorsally placed parts of both ligaments have been preserved, and namely pars tibiotalaris post. lig. deltoidei and lig. fibulotalare pos

BACKGROUND: Foot deformities are common in cerebral palsy (CP) and are likely caused by a disturbed interplay of forces in the foot. Evaluation of foot joint moments would therefore be highly relevant. However, kinetic foot models have not previously been applied to children with CP.
RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the difference in multi-segment foot joint moments between children with CP with foot deformities and children with typically developing (TD) feet?
METHODS: Children with spastic paresis were retrospectively included and compared to TD children. All children underwent clinical gait ana

Progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) is characterized by a progressive subluxation of the peritalar bones and respective joints. Two-dimensional conventional radiographs are limited in their ability to visualize the peritalar bones and joints with adequate detail to describe the complex three-dimensional deformity. An improved understanding of the relationship between joint coverage and deformity would allow clinicians to use coverage analysis to distinguish among the stages of PCFD. The aim of this study was to analyze the joint coverage of the six articular relationships within the t

OBJECTIVES: Compare the lower-limb mechanics and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk of athletes using a habitual rear-foot (RF) and fore-foot (FF) fall pattern during unplanned sidestepping (UnSS).
DESIGN: Experimental cross-sectional.
METHODS: Nineteen elite female field hockey players attended one biomechanical motion capture testing session, which consisted of a random series of pre-planned and unplanned sidestepping sport tasks. Following data collection, participants were classified as possessing a habitual RF or FF fall pattern during UnSS. Hip, knee and ankle joint angles, m

BACKGROUND: Dynamic pedobarography has been used for various orthopaedic issues. There is to date a lack of studies describing possible factors of influence with regard to lower limb function.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers were asked to perform a total of six trials (12 left and right steps, data from the right foot) wearing the M.4® ACL/CL knee brace (De Royal Industries, Powell, USA) around the right knee. The limitation ranged from full extension (baseline) to an extension lag of 45 degrees. Peak pressure values were obtained from the hindfoot, midfoot, forefoot and toes wit

Problems of treatment of battle injuries of the ankle joint and foot are discussed. These injuries are characterized with severe disturbances of regional circulation and microcirculation causing hypoxia and metabolic disorders both in soft tissues and in bones. Digital substraction angiography (DSA) was used in 7 wounded (7.53%) of all patients with battle injuries of the foot and ankle joint. Combined treatment including surgery, drugs, physical and exercise therapy, hyperbaric oxygenation was used in all the patients. Prolonged intraarterial infusion of drugs was carried out in 4 of 7 patien

Pain affecting the foot and ankle is a common complaint frequently attributable to inflammatory joint diseases. Although conventional radiography is regarded as the initial step in the diagnostic investigation, MR imaging may contribute to further evaluation of these patients due to the direct visualization of the inflammatory soft tissue formed in the disease and its effects on bone, cartilage and para-articular structures. The high spatial resolution of MR imaging combined with tissue characterization often allows initial detection of inflammatory joint abnormalities at a stage that precedes

In juvenile chronic arthritis, foot joints become affected relatively frequently. Depending on the pattern of joint involvement, different deviations or deformities can develop. The most important malpositions are pes valgoplanus, pes cavus, heelfoot (pseudocavus), hallux flexus resp. rigidus, hallux valgus, forefoot adduction and claw or hammer toes. Combinations of several deviations occur frequently. Foot involvement influences the gait pattern. Usually the heel strike phase is shortened. The loading and push-off phases are disturbed according to the pattern of joint involvement and the res

The results of surgical treatment of 82 patients with postburn deformity of a foot and an ankle joint are presented. For elimination of the deformity and contracture, the tightening scars were excised, autodermoplasty of a defect was used, in severe contracture of the ankle joint, the Ilizarov's apparatus was applied, trophic ulcers of a stump of the foot were closed by means of a migrating Filatov's graft. In 80.5% of the patients, a contracture was eliminated, the weight-bearing function of a foot improved.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with haemophilia (PwH) often prefer shod walking over barefoot walking as footwear offers ankle joint stability and comfort during gait. Yet, the biomechanical mechanisms contributing to the latter remain poorly understood.
AIM: To explore the effect of shoes on the biomechanical functioning of the ankle and foot complex in PwH with and without haemophilic ankle arthropathy and to determine the amount of ankle joint loading during shod walking.
METHODS: We analysed data of PwH without haemophilic ankle arthropathy (n = 5) and PwH with severe haemophilic ankle arthropat

AIM OF THE STUDY: Foot pronation is often associated with increased internal rotation of the lower limb, predisposing the knee joint to greater stress. However, the impact of the pronated foot on knee joint laxity has not been well understood. The study aims to find out the effect of the pronated foot on knee joint laxity.
METHODS: Forty adult participants were recruited for the study: 20 with asymptomatic pronated foot and 20 control subjects with the normal arched foot. Foot assessments were performed by navicular drop test and rearfoot angle measurements. Knee joint laxity was measured by

OBJECTIVE: From early onset of the disease, patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) experience walking impairments. Pathologic effects of RA on foot and ankle structures have been studied clinically, but little is known as to how they relate to kinematic changes during gait. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between clinically observed pathologies of foot and ankle joints and leg tendons and the corresponding gait kinematics.
METHODS: The gait of 25 subjects with varying stages of RA was recorded and foot and ankle kinematics were assessed. Magnetic resonance imaging was p

A patient with rheumatoid arthritis and a flexible rocker-bottom foot deformity underwent surgery, including a flexor digitorum longus transfer, a spring ligament reconstruction, and a lateral column lengthening using calcaneocuboid distraction arthrodesis, while preserving the talonavicular and subtalar joints. Correction was achieved with the restoration of the medial longitudinal arch, and clinical outcome scores had improved at the final follow-up (1 year postoperatively). This case suggests that, even in patients with inflammatory joint diseases presenting with a rocker-bottom foot deform

The early effects of progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD) on the ankle and syndesmotic joints have not been three-dimensionally quantified. This case-control study focused on using weight bearing CT (WBCT) distance (DM) and coverage maps (CM) and volumetric measurements as 3D radiological markers to objectively characterize early effects of PCFD on the ankle and syndesmotic joints. Seventeen consecutive patients with symptomatic stage I flexible PCFD and 20 matched controls that underwent foot/ankle WBCT were included. Three-dimensional DM and CM of the ankle and syndesmotic joints, as

BACKGROUND: Anticitrullinated peptide antibodies (ACPA) and acute phase reactants may be increased before arthritis becomes clinically detectable, suggesting that the processes underlying rheumatoid arthritis (RA) start preclinically. Whether local inflammation occurs in the preclinical phase is unknown. Therefore, we studied the small joints of ACPA positive arthralgia patients for local subclinical inflammation.
METHODS: Imaging was performed using 1.5 T extremity MRI. Painful hand or foot joints of 21 ACPA positive arthralgia patients without clinical arthritis were imaged. For comparison,
