Abdominal foreign body migration causing cardiac tamponade: A case report.

Chronic asymptomatic retention of an intragastric foreign body can pose a life-threatening scenario. In the event of migration, it may result in perforation, as shown in our unique case of pericardial perforation through the fundus. Beyond illustrating a rare condition, this case prompts us to engage in a debate about whether to retain or remove asymptomatic foreign bodies in the gastrointestinal tract. It is a 28-year-old male patient, a prisoner, with a history of recurrent foreign body ingestion leading to five previous interventions, presented a year ago to our emergency department after i

Thirteen years of migration of Kirschner wires: A mediastinal foreign body.

Kirschner wires used for orthopedic fixation can rarely migrate over time. A 26-year-old male patient in whom two Kirschner wires were inserted 13 years ago for the stabilization of the right sternoclavicular joint dislocation and migrated into the anterior mediastinum and left hilum was admitted to our clinic. Incidentally detected Kirschner wires on chest radiography were removed by superior mini-sternotomy. In conclusion, since migration of Kirschner wires may cause serious complications, these patients should be followed closely and the wires should be removed once migration is detected.

Purulent Pericarditis and Tamponade From a Migrating Esophageal Foreign Body.

BACKGROUND: Purulent pericarditis is rare, typically affecting immunocompromised individuals from hematogenous spread, contiguous extension, or direct inoculation. Esophageal foreign body migration as an etiology has not been previously described. CASE SUMMARY: A 42-year-old immunocompetent male presented with pleuritic chest pain and dysphagia after ingestion of a tripe burrito. He developed hemodynamic instability from cardiac tamponade. Emergent pericardiocentesis was performed, yielding fluid that grew Streptococcus constellatus. Computed tomography and esophagogastroduodenoscopy identifi

Migration of a urethral foreign body into the scrotum in an adolescent: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Urethral foreign body insertion is an underreported issue in adolescents. Migration to the scrotum is exceptionally rare, with < 20 cases reported. We highlight diagnostic and management challenges. A 14-year-old boy presented with 11 days of progressive scrotal pain, swelling, and fever (38.5 °C). Computed tomography (CT) revealed an 8-cm hyperdense foreign body extending from the urethra into the scrotum. Surgical exploration identified an embedded cotton swab with purulent exudate. Combined scrotal exploration and cystoscopy achieved complete retrieval. After a 3-week catheteriz

Migrating foreign bodies of penis: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Only a few cases have been reported about active foreign body implantation in the cavernous body of the penis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old man inserted two needles from the glans penis into the bilateral penile sponge body. Subsequently, two needles migrated through the penile cavernous body into the pelvic cavity. Attempts to remove the needles through the penis were unsuccessful. Eventually, after a duration exceeding one month, the displaced needles were removed in stages from the buttocks. CONCLUSION: A few cases of intracavernosal-injection-therapy-associated needle bre

Migrating foreign body into the urinary bladder of children postperineal trauma.

Foreign body (FB) in the urinary bladder (UB) is uncommon and rarely reported in pediatric patients. FB migration into the UB is an extremely rare and unpredictable condition that needs a high index of suspicion with meticulous history taking and clinical reasoning, so diagnosis may be challenging. In this study, we report two cases of male pediatric patients from Sudan with FB in the UB, with a history of penetrating perineal trauma, both were presented with irritative lower urinary tract symptoms, history of penetrating perineal trauma, and unremarkable clinical examination. Both were diagno

Migration of a foreign body to the rectum: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: Rectal foreign bodies are not an uncommon finding in outpatient departments globally. Most such objects are inserted through the anus. Occasionally, a foreign body may be ingested and may successfully pass through the entire gastrointestinal tract and be held up in the rectum. In extremely rare cases, foreign bodies in adjacent tissues or organs can penetrate the rectal wall and enter the rectal lumen. We report a rare case that the IUCD had migrated and was embedded in the rectal wall. A part of the IUCD was loosened and deformed into a metallic wire that protruded through the anus

Migrating foreign bodies in the upper aerodigestive tract: a surgical challenge.

Migrating foreign bodies in the aerodigestive tract are uncommon but can pose serious complications. Long-standing migrating foreign bodies can exist manifesting chronic and unusual symptoms such as chronic cough, recurrent episodes of dyspnoea and fever. Adverse body reactions to foreign objects such as adhesions can cause difficulty in their diagnosis, localisation and removal. A thorough clinical and radiographical approach is of immense value in such cases. We report two difficult cases of migrated foreign bodies: a 2-year-old child with a long-standing foreign body that migrated to the up

An unusual endobronchial foreign body: a gauze that migrated from the mediastinum.

The authors report a 48-year-old white male with lung cancer who was admitted to their clinic with a 1-year history of cough and shortness of breath. The patient was hospitalized because of progression of his complaints over 1 month. On the 3rd day of hospitalization, he expectorated a piece of gauze. The authors performed a fiber-optic bronchoscopy and saw pieces of gauze originating from granulation tissue located in the angle of the lower trachea and left main bronchi. A detailed anamnesis revealed that a mediastinoscopy had been performed 3 years ago for lung cancer staging: the gauze had

A foreign body in the pharynx migrating through the internal jugular vein.

We present an unusual and a rare case study of a 45-year-old woman who had swallowed a sharp pointed metallic foreign body while eating meat. The foreign body had migrated from the cricopharynx through the parapharyngeal space and penetrated the internal jugular vein over a period of 10 days presenting as a tender neck swelling. The management of this case is discussed here in brief.

Progressive ulnar neuropathy caused by delayed migration of a foreign body.

Foreign bodies in the hand can cause a variable degree of acute or delayed injuries to the important structures. We report a rare case of a progressive ulnar neuropathy caused by delayed migration of a foreign body in the forearm. Ultrasonographic localisation and surgical removal of the foreign body resulted in gradual recovery of neurological function.

From Arm to Heart: A Case of Migrated Foreign Body Retention.

Foreign bodies in the heart are a rare condition and are caused by many unexpected circumstances. These objects reach the heart in different ways and lead to unpredictable complications, especially those with sharp tips. The main diagnostic modalities are radiograph, computed tomography, and echocardiography. The first is necessary, and the last 2 can provide more accurate details. The purpose of this report is to review a case of foreign body migration in the heart. A foreign body in the patient migrated from the left elbow to the heart. Ultimately, a black metallic strip-like cardiac foreign

[Cases of migration of swallowed foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract].

Migration of swallowed foreign bodies from the gastrointestinal tract is a rare phenomenon compared with the total number of ingestions. In the reported two cases, the serious septic condition indicated urgent surgical intervention. We found a piece of wire swallowed a few months earlier in the right lobe of the liver and the retroperitoneum in case one, and a piece of wire in the pericardium, which migrated from the stomach through the left lobe of the liver, in case two. Abscesses and phlegmonae were found in the retroperitoneum and then in the femoral region requiring a reoperation in case

Laparoscopic Removal of an Ingested Foreign Body with Transesophageal Migration into the Mediastinum.

Removal of a transesophageal migrated foreign body is recommended to prevent injury to adjacent structures. As the endoscopic approach is not feasible for a transesophageal foreign body migrated into the mediastinum, the thoracoscopic approach is recommended. The thoracoscopic approach often requires single lung ventilation and is associated with more pulmonary complications. The use of a laparoscopic approach to remove a mediastinal foreign body has not been reported earlier. In this report, the authors describe a laparoscopic approach for the removal of a transesophageal migrated foreign bod
