Foreign body reaction mimicking a second primary tumour of the oesophagus.

OBJECTIVE: To present a significant complication of pharyngolaryngeal reconstruction, which resulted in diagnostic confusion as it mimicked a second primary tumour of the head and neck. METHODS: Case report and review of the world literature. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old man developed a granulomatous foreign body reaction, mimicking a second primary tumour, at the distal end of a salivary bypass tube, following pharyngolaryngectomy and reconstruction using a tubed anterolateral thigh flap. Clinically and radiologically, this was felt to represent a second primary tumour of the oesophagus, but

[Massive foreign body reaction after intraocular penetration of hot, liquid plastic].

PATIENT: A 32-year-old male had an injury of his right eye by hot liquid plastic (Ultradur R). Intraoperatively, the eye was found broadly penetrated and filled up by more than 50% with ragged pieces of plastic. Computed tomography three days after wound closure revealed remaining foreign body material. As function was totally lost no further operation was considered. Seven weeks after the trauma, the eye was enucleated because of a painful phthisis. Histology showed numerous giant cells. CONCLUSIONS: Hot liquid plastic may perforate the eye and fill it up to a great extent. Due to intraocula

Delayed foreign-body reaction and breast deformity after free silicone injections.

Liquid silicone injections for breast augmentation are associated with significant complications. They remain prevalent in transgender and gender-diverse populations facing barriers to regulated surgical care. We present a case of a transgender female with a history of breast silicone injections who developed local complications requiring surgical excision. Clinical breast images and gross pathology are provided. This case highlights characteristic clinical features of silicone-related complications, the role of imaging in diagnosis and the importance of equitable access to safe gender-affirmi

Titanium Allergy: A Case of Foreign Body Reaction Following Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy.

Titanium is widely regarded as a biocompatible and inert material commonly used in surgical implants. Despite this reputation, hypersensitivity reactions to titanium, though rare, can lead to persistent and unexplained postoperative symptoms. We report the case of a 76-year-old woman who developed progressive right upper quadrant abdominal pain, burning sensations, neuropathic symptoms, and fatigue three months after laparoscopic cholecystectomy in which titanium clips were used. Her history included documented systemic intolerance to a titanium dental implant 10 years earlier, which had requi

A Delayed Foreign Body Reaction to a Hemostatic Agent Mimicking Neoplasm.

Hydrophilic polymer-based hemostatic agents containing potassium ferrate are increasingly used in dermatologic surgery due to their rapid, coagulation-independent mechanism of action. While considered safe, delayed foreign body reactions to these agents are underrecognized and may mimic neoplastic recurrence, hypertrophic scarring, or cyst formation. We present the case of a 63-year-old man who developed a persistent papule at the site of a prior biopsy, clinically concerning for squamous cell carcinoma or residual cyst. Histopathologic evaluation revealed amorphous basophilic material with as

Towards non-wettable neural electrodes for a minimized foreign body reaction.

Functionality of neural implants can be seriously impaired by scarring during the foreign body reaction (FBR). Tailoring of the material-tissue interface is supposed to modulate part of the FBR. Surface structures might physically modulate the foreign body reaction in the acute phase directly after implantation. This work focuses on fabrication and characterization of bioinspired microtextures comprising reentrant cavities with non-wettable surface characteristics. The Selected microstructure patterns were fabricated using direct laser writing and were characterized by means of contact angle m

Foreign-Body Reaction to Bioabsorbable Plate and Screw in Craniofacial Surgery.

Hydroxyapatite and poly-L-lactide plates are often used for maxillofacial surgery. These plates take 3 to 4 years to resorb completely, leading to the possibility of a foreign-body reaction. A 20-year-old woman who developed a foreign-body reaction to the plates was reported. Based on review of the relevant literature, foreign-body reactions have often been reported with this plate. Long-term follow-up is warranted to evaluate patients using this plate in maxillofacial surgery.

Bone wax: a foreign body/giant cell reaction in the foot.

Bone wax has been used for years by surgeons as a hemostatic agent to prevent bleeding from bone surfaces. Though the effectiveness of bone wax as a hemostatic agent while acting as a tamponade is well known, it is not without its complications. It has been documented in the medical literature that bone wax may remain in the body for many years as a foreign body and in some cases cause a giant cell reaction at various surgical sites. However, to the authors' knowledge, there has not been a reported case of a foreign body giant cell reaction secondary to the use of bone wax in the current podia

Penis swelling due to foreign body reaction after injection of silicone.

A 19-year-old man presented with phimosis and painful swelling of the penis four weeks after augmentation with silicone in Thailand. Histology revealed a foreign body reaction to silicone. Infectious causes were ruled out. Granulomatous foreign body reactions to silicone are common, but there are few case reports on reactions following silicone injection for penis enlargement. Foreign body reactions should be included in the differential diagnosis of penis swelling.

Delayed foreign-body reaction to absorbable implants in metacarpal fracture treatment.

BACKGROUND: First-generation bioabsorbable implants have been associated with a high complication rate attributable to weak mechanical properties and rapid degradation. This has led to the development of stronger devices with improved durability. However, the modern implants have raised concerns about potential late-occurring adverse reactions. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: This retrospective study addressed the following questions: Can absorbable implants consisting of trimethylene carbonate, L-lactide, and D,L-lactide provide adequate fixation for healing of a metacarpal fracture? Will these implants

Foreign body reaction to polymethylsiloxane gel (Bioplastique) after vocal fold augmentation.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: The consequences of vocal fold paralysis include voice change, airway problems and difficulty swallowing. Medialisation procedures using injected material have been used for many decades, with varying outcomes, mainly secondary to lifespan, tissue reaction or migration. Newer materials have recently become clinically available which are easier to manage and supposedly less likely to elicit foreign body reaction. METHOD OF STUDY: Case report. RESULTS: We report a case of foreign body reaction and possible migration of polymethylsiloxane gel (Bioplastique), one such mater

Bilaterally symmetrical epidermal inclusion cysts with foreign-body giant-cell reaction.

Epidermal inclusion cysts often occur as a result of traumatic implantation of epidermal cells into dermal tissue. The epidermal cells within the dermis can continue to grow and lead to the production of a lipid- and keratin-filled cyst, which can erode into bone and adjacent tissues. The authors present a case of bilaterally symmetrical epidermal inclusion cysts that occurred separately over a 10-year period. A brief review of the literature is also presented.

Decoding the "Fingerprint" of Implant Materials: Insights into the Foreign Body Reaction.

Foreign body reaction (FBR) is a prevalent yet often overlooked pathological phenomenon, particularly within the field of biomedical implantation. The presence of FBR poses a heavy burden on both the medical and socioeconomic systems. This review seeks to elucidate the protein "fingerprint" of implant materials, which is generated by the physiochemical properties of the implant materials themselves. In this review, the activity of macrophages, the formation of foreign body giant cells (FBGCs), and the development of fibrosis capsules in the context of FBR are introduced. Additionally, the rela

[Ectopic tooth as a rare cause of foreign body reaction of the nose].

This is a case report of a 71-year-old male with three months of gradually increasing irritation, secretion and right-sided nasal stenosis. The patient had not experienced any facial trauma nor had he had any previous surgical intervention to the nasal or oral cavity. An examination of the nasal cavity raised the suspicion of a foreign body in the right nasal floor. A computed tomography was performed and a high-density, foreign body was identified. The patient was referred to the local department of otorhinolaryngology, where an ectopic tooth was successfully removed in local anaesthesia.

Classification of Foreign Body Reactions due to Industrial Silicone Injection.

BACKGROUND: A foreign body reaction (FBR) is a typical tissue response to a biomaterial that has been injected or implanted in human body tissue. There has been a lack of data on the classification of foreign body reaction to silicone injection, which can describe the pattern of body tissue responses to silicone. OBJECTIVE: Determine the foreign body reaction to silicone injection. METHOD: We modified the classification proposed by Duranti and colleagues, which has categorized a FBR to hyaluronic acid injection into a new classification of an FBR to silicone injection. A cohort study of 31 w

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of palatinal glands with exuberant foreign-body giant cell reaction.

A 69-year-old man with a 0.6 cm yellowish polypoid lesion in the lateral soft palate for 2 years is presented. Histological examination of the tumor revealed a small, well-differentiated, mucoepidermoid carcinoma dominated by densely packed cholesterol clefts in association with an exuberant foreign-body reaction with several giant cells. The tumor entity 'mucoepidermoid carcinoma with foreign-body giant cells' might be differentiated from 'mucoepidermoid carcinoma with an osteoclast-like giant cell stromal reaction' because differences in pathogenesis and tumor behavior are assumed.

Ongoing foreign body reaction to subcutaneous implanted (heparin) modified Dacron in rats.

Dacron-containing heart valve repair devices trigger chronic inflammation characterized by the presence of activated macrophages, foreign body giant cells, and capsule formation. Upon blood contact, proinflammatory proteins adsorb to the material and provide a substrate for monocyte binding and differentiation. Various heparin-coated polymers have been shown to reduce adsorption of proinflammatory proteins in vitro and in vivo. In this study, the effect of knitted, heparin-coated Dacron on the foreign body reaction was tested subcutaneously in rats. We hypothesized that the anti-inflammatory e
