Alvarezsauroidea (Tetanurae) are nonavian theropod dinosaurs whose forelimb evolution is characterised by the overdevelopment of digit I, at the expense of the other two digits, complemented by a drastic forelimb shortening in derived species (Parvicursorinae). These variations are recognised as evolutionary developmental anomalies. Evolutionary teratology hence leads to a double diagnosis with (1) macrodactyly of digit I and microdactyly of digits II and III, plus (2) anterior micromelia. The teratological macrodactyly/microdactyly coupling evolved first. Developmental mechanisms disturbing l

OBJECTIVE To describe the clinical features, diagnostic procedures, management, and outcome of horses with peripheral neuropathy of a forelimb. DESIGN Retrospective case series. ANIMALS 27 horses. PROCEDURES Records from 2000 to 2013 were reviewed to identify horses with peripheral neuropathy of a forelimb. Horses were grouped as having predominant lesions of a suprascapular nerve, axillary nerve, or radial nerve (alone or in association with other brachial plexus nerves) on the basis of physical examination and diagnostic imaging findings. Treatments were primarily conservative. Signalment, h

This report describes the use of a pressure-sensitive walkway to evaluate an uncommon case of a cat with dorsal luxation of the left scapula and an amputated right forelimb. The findings suggest that limb amputation induced load redistribution mostly to the contralateral forelimb despite the scapular luxation.

BACKGROUND: The forelimb amputee poses many reconstructive challenges in the clinical setting, and there is a paucity of established surgical models for study. To further elucidate the pathogenic process in amputation neuroma formation, we created a reproducible, well-tolerated rabbit forelimb amputation model.
METHODS: Upon approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee, 5 New Zealand White rabbits underwent left forelimb amputation. During this initial surgery, the median, radial and ulnar nerves were transected 1.6-2.5 (mean 2.0) cm distal to the brachial plexus, transposed

Bilateral varus antebrachial deformity in a 7-month-old working dog was surgically corrected. The deformity was a sequela to premature closure of the distal radial physes after trauma to the forelimbs. Treatment was by ulnectomy and oblique radial osteotomy. Stabilisation of the fractures was maintained by an external fixation device. The treatment was successful and the dog returned to work as a sheep dog.

Exposure of A/J mice on day 9.5 of gestation to the derivatives of three acidic anticonvulsant agents, namely dimethadione, sodium valproate, and sodium diphenylhydantoin, each induced postaxial forelimb ectrodactyly predominantly of the right side. This specific malformation has previously been associated with the administration of acetazolamide to rodents; however, several agents can induce this same defect including other carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, carbon dioxide, cadmium, ethanol, ammonium chloride, and 13-cis retinoic acid. The relative potency of the three agents indicates no direct

Electrophysiological recordings were made from primary somatosensory cortex in a raccoon that had suffered a traumatic amputation of the forearm some time prior to its capture. Neurons in the affected forepaw region of sensory cortex were not silent but responded to cutaneous or neuroma activation of the remaining forearm stump. In addition, cells at many sites were responsive to tactile stimulation of the glabrous skin of the hindpaw ipsilateral to the damage. This indicates that the cortical plasticity following peripheral nerve damage can occur over much larger regions of cortex than was pr

Ischaemia in the forelimb of pigs was induced by clamping the main artery of an 'isolated leg' preparation. In plasma from the brachial vein the hypoxanthine concentration increased linearly between 10 and 25 min of ischaemia. The average increase in plasma hypoxanthine concentration in ten experiments was 25-0 micromol/1 after 30 min of ischaemia. It is concluded that the plasma hypoxanthine level might be a useful indicator of tissue hypoxia caused by impairment of peripheral blood flow.

The basal ganglia are fundamental to motor control and their dysfunction is linked to motor deficits1-8. Influential investigations on the primate oculomotor system posited that movement generally depends on transient pauses of tonically firing inhibitory basal ganglia output neurons releasing brainstem motor centres9,10. However, prominent increases in basal ganglia output neuron firing observed during other motor tasks cast doubts on the proposed mechanisms of movement regulation through basal ganglia circuitry11-22. Here we show that basal ganglia output neurons in the mouse substantia nigr

The forelimbs and hindlimbs of vertebrates are bilaterally symmetric. The mechanisms that ensure symmetric limb formation are unknown but they can be disrupted in disease. In Holt-Oram Syndrome (HOS), caused by mutations in TBX5, affected individuals have left-biased upper/forelimb defects. We demonstrate a role for the transcription factor Tbx5 in ensuring the symmetric formation of the left and right forelimb. In our mouse model, bilateral hypomorphic levels of Tbx5 produces asymmetric forelimb defects that are consistently more severe in the left limb than the right, phenocopying the left-b

OBJECTIVE: Intraspinal microstimulation (ISMS) is a promising method for activating the spinal cord distal to an injury. The objectives of this study were to examine the ability of chronically implanted stimulating wires within the cervical spinal cord to (1) directly produce forelimb movements, and (2) assess whether ISMS stimulation could improve subsequent volitional control of paretic extremities following injury.
APPROACH: We developed a technique for implanting intraspinal stimulating electrodes within the cervical spinal cord segments C6-T1 of Long-Evans rats. Beginning 4 weeks after a

Upper extremity neuromuscular electrical stimulation (FNS) has long been utilized as a neuroprosthesis to restore hand-grasp function in individuals with neurological disorders and injuries. More recently, electrical stimulation is being used as a rehabilitative therapy to tap into central nervous system plasticity. Here, we present initial development of a rodent model for neuromuscular stimulation induced forelimb movement that can be used as a platform to investigate stimulation-induced plasticity. The motor points for flexors and extensors of the shoulder, elbow, and digits were identified

Epidural evoked potential recordings were performed in four macaque monkeys on peripheral nerve stimulation, before and after spinal transection, to evaluate whether the Schiff-Sherrington phenomenon could be demonstrated in this manner. No change in evoked potentials from upper extremity stimulation was seen after mid-thoracic spinal cord transection.

The substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), the principal output nucleus of the basal ganglia, is traditionally viewed as a binary gate that permits actions through disinhibition. However, this framework fails to explain the fluid, high-dimensional control required for skilled behavior. Using high-resolution 3D kinematic tracking and automated behavioral classification, we show that SNr population activity paradoxically increases during skilled forelimb reaching and scales with motif-specific kinematics. Systematic optogenetic and chemogenetic perturbations reveal that the SNr bidirectionally

OBJECTIVE: To describe a case of traumatic endocardial rupture, without obvious clinical signs of cardiac injury, resulting in acute thrombosis of the forelimbs in a dog.
CASE SUMMARY: A young adult male German Shepherd Dog presented with vehicular polytrauma. The dog was diagnosed with hypovolemic shock and traumatic pneumothorax and was stabilized, having displayed no clinical indicators of cardiac dysfunction. For 10 days, the dog was treated with no complications in the hospital for wounds but presented again shortly after discharge with bilateral forelimb paraparesis determined likely to

Vascularized composite allografts (VCAs) refer to en bloc heterogenous tissue that is transplanted to restore form and function after amputation or tissue loss. Rat limb VCA has emerged as a robust translational model to study the pathophysiology of these transplants. However, these models have predominately focused on hindlimb VCAs which does not translate anatomically to upper extremity transplantation, whereas the majority of clinical VCAs are upper extremity and hand transplants. This work details our optimization of rat forelimb VCA procurement and sub-normothermic machine perfusion (SNMP

Associative plasticity occurs when two stimuli converge on a common neural target. Previous efforts to promote associative plasticity have targeted cortex, with variable and moderate effects. In addition, the targeted circuits are inferred, rather than tested directly. In contrast, we sought to target the strong convergence between motor and sensory systems in the spinal cord. We developed spinal cord associative plasticity, precisely timed pairing of motor cortex and dorsal spinal cord stimulations, to target this interaction. We tested the hypothesis that properly timed paired stimulation wo

Protein-energy malnutrition (PEM) pre-existing at stroke onset is believed to worsen functional outcome, yet the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. Since brain inflammation is an important modulator of neurological recovery after stroke, we explored the impact of PEM on neuroinflammation in the acute period in relation to stroke-initiated sensori-motor abnormalities. Adult rats were fed a low-protein (LP) or normal protein (NP) diet for 28 days before inducing photothrombotic stroke (St) in the forelimb region of the motor cortex or sham surgery; the diets continued for 3 days aft

BACKGROUND: Microraptor is an essential animal for understanding the evolution of flight in birds and their closest relatives. Recent studies have uncovered evidence of its powered flight potential and details of its diet and ecology. However, we are still missing a thorough description of the anatomy of Microraptor connecting feathers, soft tissues, and osteology together. Here we focus on the forelimbs of ten new Microraptor specimens from the Shandong Tianyu Museum of Nature studied under Laser-Stimulated Fluorescence. We compared our results with extensively studied existing specimens (e.g
