This paper describes the international disaster victim identification (DVI) response mounted in Thailand, with particular reference to Singapore's contribution to this process, in the wake of the Asian tsunami of 26 December, 2004, which devastated parts of more than 10 countries in and around the Indian Ocean and claimed more than 200,000 lives. Although Singapore was unscathed by this natural calamity, over 30 Singaporean visitors were counted amongst the thousands of deceased victims, mostly in Thailand. The systematic application of forensic pathology, forensic dentistry, DNA profiling, an

Much has been written about bite mark comparisons and bite mark analysis. It has largely been written for, and remained within the domain of, the forensic odontologist despite the limited number of such specialists and the even smaller subset who have expertise in this area. For those health professionals who work in the field of clinical forensic medicine, most will not have access to a forensic odontologist. Courts can be reticent about the costs involved in obtaining another expert opinion. For health professionals, who will likely encounter more bite marks in their career than forensic odo

Age estimation is crucial in forensic sciences for victim identification, migration studies, and bioarchaeology. In subadults, it is based on maturational changes, while in adults, it relies on degenerative processes, reducing accuracy. Traditional methods, such as anthropological and dental approaches, are widely used, but recent advances in biochemical and molecular biology (BMB) have introduced epigenetic and biochemical analyses. Given the variability in biological aging, it is essential to evaluate and compare these methods for more precise and reproducible results. This article is a scop

Human-bear conflicts are a growing concern globally, with Russia harboring a significant population of brown bears. This case report details a fatal encounter between a male hunter and a brown bear in the greater Khabarovsk region. On October 2015, the hunter's body was discovered approximately 400 m from a deceased brown bear, indicating a deadly confrontation. Forensic examination revealed extensive trauma and varied patterns of injuries, with the cause of death attributed to mixed shock from traumatic injuries and acute blood loss. Despite the limited dental information due to the missing m

Half a century has passed since the department for education and research on forensic odontology was established at dentistry-related universities in Japan in 1964. In order to meet the demands of society, the number of universities with a department of forensic odontology increased up until around 2005. In 2007, the Japanese Society of Forensic Dental Science was established, and then a series of reforms such as establishment of the Study Council on Death Cause Investigation in both the National Police Agency and the Cabinet Office of the Japanese government, cabinet decision of enactment and

Reports of deaths caused by alligators or crocodiles are rare in the literature. These deaths may be related to sharp force trauma caused by the teeth of these animals, with or without mutilation, or even drowning after seizure and submersion of the victim. It is difficult to forensically identify bodies in cases of mutilation of the upper limbs during the attack or when the corpse is in an advanced stage of skeletonization. Smile photographs are an important source of ante-mortem references for comparison. We report a human identification based on a photograph of a victim, with the absence of

Forensic investigations depend on accurate human identification which requires use of panoramic dental radiographs because traditional biometric methods do not work. Deep learning methods fail to provide accurate results because they lack sufficient training data which makes it difficult to identify specific features and they cannot handle changes that happen after death. The study presents DentID-Net which functions as an anatomical identification system that employs dental identification methods from both living and deceased individuals. The system combines three interdependent elements whic

Perimortem traumatic dental injuries (PTDIs) can provide critical forensic information for reconstructing events occurring around the time of death. Accurate assessment and differentiation of traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) may contribute to the interpretation of injury patterns, the evaluation of possible causes and manners of death, and forensic investigations. However, accurately determining the timing of dental trauma, particularly distinguishing PTDIs from antemortem dental injuries (ADIs) and postmortem (PM) alterations, remains a significant forensic challenge. To provide a structured

Dental age estimation is common in orthodontics, paedodontics, paleodontology and forensic dentistry. The aim of this study was to assess chronological course of eruptive developmental phases of third molar and to establish parameters for the Croatian population. Sample of this study consisted of 1249 orthopantomograms of 530 (42.4%) male and 719 (57.6%) female subjects, aged 10 to 25 years. Eruptive phases were classified in 4 stages. No significant sex difference was found. Established chronology of the third molar eruption can be used as a standard for the assessment of dental age in clinic

Forensic odontology is the science of dental identification. This paper describes the contribution of forensic odontology to tsunami victim identification in Thailand, with particular reference to the Singaporean victims. Thirteen Singaporeans were reported missing in Phuket following the Indian ocean tsunami on 26 December 2004. To date, 10 victims have been found and identified, eight of whom were identified by dental records. The author travelled twice to southern Thailand and spent 5 weeks there. First, in December 2004 as part of a Singapore Police Force Disaster Victim Identification tea

Studies related to facial soft tissue thickness (FSTT) have been conducted since the late 19th century. Soft tissue is any tissue in the body that is not hardened by ossification or calcification processes, such as bones and teeth; and varies according to sex, age, race, and nutritional status. Forensically, soft tissue thickness plays an important role in cases where a cadaver has no unique characteristics; and the remains cannot be identified through DNA analysis, fingerprints, or examination of dental records. Therefore, the results of the current study suggest that the average thickness of

Dental age estimation (DAE) by means of direct visualisation remains a fundamental tool in forensic odontology, particularly for Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) in resource-limited settings. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to calculate the pooled correlation coefficient between chronological age (CA) and six Gustafson-derived dental variables in modern adults. Following PRISMA guidelines, five databases were searched until June 2025, resulting in 27 included studies, with 19 utilized in a three-level random-effects meta-analysis. The overall weighted correlation between CA

Forensic odontology plays a crucial role in establishing the identity in mass disasters and criminal cases with high accuracy. Dental anomalies and features help in such situations. Congenital and developmental dental anomalies can be easily documented to establish distinctive and individualistic characteristics of an individual. The location, number of teeth involved, and the type of anomaly vary between individuals. Similarly, dental malformations also assist greatly in the identification process. Many types of dental anomalies have been studied in the past for their individualistic characte

Even though one of the first bite mark cases was Doyle v. State in 1954 (a bitten cheese case), the research has focused on bite marks inflicted in human skin. As published Papers, Case Reports, or Technical Notes can constitute precedents which are relied upon in making the legal arguments and a considerable amount of case law exists in this area, we present a systematic review on bite mark analysis in foodstuffs and inanimate objects and their underlying proofs for validity and judicial acceptance according to Daubert rulings. Results showed that there is vulnerability in these procedures, a

From the 19th century, society has been aided by Forensic Odontology and the teaching practice has rapidly expanded in the last 30 years. Information about academics and teaching topics can be found in literature but any research has never investigated the basic profile of lecturers by survey. The aim of this study was to explore the lecturers' opinions on teaching the subject in the 21st century and its current standing. Even though the number of forensic dentists is not low worldwide, not all are involved with teaching. A total of 36 dentists (26 males, 10 females) from 19 countries answered

INTRODUCTION: Interpersonal violence results in injuries that frequently affect oral, head and neck structures, the treatment of which must be carried out by Oral health practitioners with sufficient training to detect the problem and manage the victim's lesions and need for referral. The objective of this study is to know the academic preparation that Spanish dentistry students receive in learning outcomes related to interpersonal violence during undergraduate academic training.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A survey was conducted through an online form with 9 questions (Survey Monkey platform). Th
