Field validation of blow fly age estimation methods for determining time of placement of human remains in Tennessee, USA.

Forensic entomology currently represents one of the best approaches for estimating the minimum postmortem interval (PMIMIN) in medicolegal death investigations given certain parameters and assumptions are met. However, validation of standard estimation methods used in this field are few and far between. Our project aimed to quantify errors associated with four aspects of a typical insect age estimation: insect species, development stage, base temperature for calculating accumulated degree hours, and reference dataset. To do this, we collected 725 larval dipteran samples from 79 human donors at

The effect of postmortem penetrative trauma on oviposition behavior of Calliphora vicina.

Flies in the family Calliphoridae are purported to demonstrate a strong attraction to and preferential colonization of wounds when present on human corpses or carrion. This well-circulated concept in Forensic Entomology is based on surprisingly few empirical studies that have examined the oviposition behavior of necrophagous Diptera toward wounds of vertebrate animals. In the present study, the oviposition behavior of Calliphora vicina toward piglets inflicted with postmortem sharp force trauma was examined during a 10-h test period under controlled laboratory conditions and in an outdoor urba

Taphonomic patterns of a WWI Alpine mass grave: insights from the Italian front.

Understanding taphonomic patterns on skeletal remains, along with associated entomological evidence, remains a critical challenge in forensic and archaeological investigations. This study examines the specific impact of an Alpine environment on a WWI mass grave of 12 Austro-Hungarian soldiers (Cima Cady, Italy). Alongside general poor preservation caused by acidic soil erosion, a distinctive reddish staining affected over 80% of the skeletal elements. This was linked to the invasive root system of Juniperus sp., a plant species typical of Alpine zones, which had penetrated the grave and bone c

Worldwide Forensic Dermatology.

Forensic medicine can involve the skin, mucosa, hair, and nails. Traditionally limited to examinations of decedents, forensic medicine now also encompasses age estimation, civil and criminal case investigations, and assessments of live victims of torture, human trafficking, and traffic accidents. Forensic dermatology, a recently emerging field in India, focuses on determining causes of death by distinguishing drug reactions from traumatic injuries and assessing the injuries in victims of human trafficking, torture, assault, deprivation, neglect, and abuse. Core elements of all forensic discipl

Infrared spectroscopy combined with interpretable machine learning for forensic identification and weathering time estimation of empty blow fly puparia.

In this work, spectral data was used to identify the species and weathering time of blow fly puparia, which helps with the estimation of the minimum post-mortem interval (PMImin) in forensic science. After a preliminary model selection stage, the two best-performing modeling approaches were compared: a classical Logistic Regression (LR) model and a more complex Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). By evaluating both models on these two tasks, we aim to assess the performance trade-offs between competitive traditional machine learning approaches and modern deep learning techniques. Moreover, bey

An interdisciplinary forensic approach in a mummified child with evidence of abuse and neglect.

UNLABELLED: Mummification of corpses with partial skeletonization is not an uncommon occurrence in daily forensic work. Cooperation between different forensic fields is important in these cases in terms of obtaining the most accurate and forensically relevant results, especially when child abuse and neglect is suspected. In Central Europe, up to 21% of children are exposed to physical and psychological harm, which is mostly perpetrated by family members. This report describes a case of subadult female mummified remains in which interdisciplinary forensic pathology, forensic anthropology, and e

Development and age estimation of the intrapuparial period of Phormia regina (Diptera: Calliphoridae) for postmortem interval estimation.

Phormia regina (Meigen, 1826; Diptera: Calliphoridae) is a Holarctic species that rapidly colonizes carcasses and has been used as an indicator for determining the minimum postmortem interval. However, studies using morphological methods to estimate the intrapuparial age of P. regina are lacking. In this study, morphological changes within the puparium were observed under a stereomicroscope at 7 constant temperatures ranging from 16 °C to 34 °C. The intrapuparial period was categorized into 12 substages. Morphological indicators, including compound eyes, mouthparts, antennae, thorax, legs, win

Intrapuparial development of Sarcophaga (Liopygia) ruficornis (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), a species of medical-veterinary and forensic importance, under laboratory conditions.

Sarcophaga (=Parasarcophaga) (Liopygia) ruficornis (Fabricius, 1794) is a species of medical-veterinary and forensic importance, as its immatures cause myiasis in humans and animals and colonize carcasses and cadavers. Therefore, investigations into the biology and morphology of this species, with a particular focus on pupae that constitute ≥50% of the developmental period for the immatures, are pertinent. Although there are biological and morphological studies of pupae, the intrapuparial development at different temperatures has not yet been analysed. Therefore, the present study aimed to des

Medicolegal entomology in an elder neglect investigation: A case study from South Korea.

Medicolegal entomology, once primarily utilized for estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI), now serves an expanding role in evaluating abuse and neglect in vulnerable populations. This case study examines a pivotal 2022 ruling by the Busan District Court, where forensic entomological evidence led to a conviction for negligent homicide by abandonment. The victim, an 82-year-old woman with dementia and multiple chronic conditions, was discovered in a severely unsanitary environment. Numerous third-instar larvae of Lucilia sericata were retrieved from necrotic pressure ulcers, and developmenta

A Case of Insect Colonization Before the Death.

Forensic entomology is a branch of forensic science in which insects are used as evidence in legal investigations relating to humans, domestic animals and wildlife. One of the theoretical pillars on which the discipline is based concerns the fact that flies colonize a body after death. However in cases of myiasis, maggots are present before death, with consequences in the correct estimation of the minimum postmortem interval (mPMI). We report here the case of a woman, largely colonized by fly larvae, who has lain alive in her garden for four days prior to being rescued. Larvae were found on th

DNA Recovery from Forensically Relevant Blow Fly Larvae (Insecta, Diptera, Calliphoridae) Kept in Different Preservative Solutions.

There are still many gaps in knowledge about how different preservative solutions can guarantee sufficient DNA recovery for the taxonomic determination of flies of forensic importance. In the present study, we evaluated the recovery and amplification rates of mitochondrial DNA from larvae of the forensically important blow fly Chrysomya megacephala (F.) (Diptera, Calliphoridae), preserved for up to 47 days in the solutions commonly used in routine forensic investigations. Some larvae (N = 88) were immediately placed in the preservative solution, while another group of larvae (N = 88) was kille

Effects of clonazepam and flunitrazepam on the development cycle of Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy 1830 and their forensic implications.

Benzodiazepines are commonly identified in drug overdose deaths worldwide. However, research on their effects on the most common necrophagous insect species is limited. In this context, the current study investigated the effects of clonazepam and flunitrazepam on the development cycle of Calliphora vicina Robineau-Desvoidy, 1830 (Diptera: Calliphoridae). Three blow fly colonies were reared under controlled laboratory conditions (24℃, 50% humidity, 12:12 light-dark cycle), and the experiment was carried out in triplicate. A solution of 4 mg of clonazepam and 2 mg of flunitrazepam, each dissolve

Intra-puparial development of forensically important Sarcophaga princeps at different constant temperatures.

Sarcophaga princeps Wiedemann, 1830 (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) is a species widely distributed in the Oriental and parts of the Palearctic regions. Documented cases have reported its colonization of human corpses and association with livestock myiasis, highlighting its significant value in forensic and medical research. However, current methods for estimating the intra-puparial age of S. princeps, which accounts for more than half of the entire immature stage, remain lacking. In this study, pupae were sampled at four constant temperatures (16, 22, 28, and 34 °C), and intra-puparial morphological

Recovery of forensically important insect larvae from human cadavers in Malaysia (1993-1996).

Forensically important entomological specimens recovered from 95 forensic cases of human cadavers from April 1993 to May 1996 in Malaysia were identified and analysed. The results indicated that 73.7% of these specimens were Chrysomya species, occurring either as single or mixed infestations. Of these, the most prominent species were Ch megacephala (F.) and Ch rufifacies (Macquart). Other fly maggots recovered included Sarcophaga spp., Lucilia spp. and Hermetia spp., mostly occurring together with other calliphorine flies. A member of Muscidae fly, Ophyra spp. was also recovered for the first

Influence of Clothing on Decomposition and Presence of Insects on Rabbit Carcasses.

The decomposition rate and insects attraction to carcasses are affected by a number of factors such as temperature, body mass, the presence of poisons, humidity, and insect activity. The present study was planned to investigate the influence of clothing on both the decomposition process and the presence of insects on rabbit carcasses. The study was performed in May 2016 and involved the use of 18 live mature rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.), which were euthanized by chloroform. Rabbit carcasses were divided into three replicates with six rabbits in each replicate. Rabbits in each replicate w
